nevster··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
When I quit the app, why is it still running in the background?
nevster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I spent way too much time doing fancy infographic-style stuff for a video about the 4th book in the Wheel of Time : https://youtu.be/ONs2inKELR0

Meanwhile, Daniel Greene's dodgy whiteboard video has a million views. Don't mind me as I eat these sour grapes...

nevster··on Stalking the Wily Hacker: 40 years later – Cliff Stoll [video]
The term Page-Turner is often misapplied. I rarely find any books genuine page-turners.

The Cuckoo's Egg is the exception. Such a fantastically well-written book! Thanks Cliff!

nevster··on The Economic Benefit of Refactoring
Probably it's just the same dopamine hits that make things like watching the Windows 98 Defragger soothing.
nevster··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
"This post is an XBOX"
nevster··on The art and engineering of Sega CD Silpheed
The Apple IIGS version was great!
nevster··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
Another idea for you - search for "booktube" on youtube. Plenty of recommendations!
nevster··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
https://app.auctionsieve.com/

I've converted my 23 year old Java desktop app to a website.

It's an app to make searching eBay an actual joy. Perform a search, then highlight text to trash or group that term. Then perform the search again tomorrow and it will hide all the stuff you've already seen.

nevster··on The Last Quiet Thing
I hate that fade-in stuff. Basically just close any page that does it.
nevster··on Science Fiction Is Dying. Long Live Post Sci-Fi?
There must be some law about articles proclaiming X is dead. Does anyone know of one? Something along the lines of "Any article declaring X is dead is always wrong and just trying to sell you something"

Dumbest article I've read in a while.

nevster··on OpenClaw is changing my life
I think the main thing is, these are all green fields projects. (Note original author talking about executing ideas for projects.)
nevster··on Scott Adams has died
I mean no disrespect by this but when I saw the headline on HN I immediately thought it was about Scott Adams the text adventure guy. And then I started watching the video and was a bit confused at first before it all clicked.
nevster··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
Here's how AI coding has helped me : to beat procrastination.

Often while trying to fall asleep, I'll be thinking something like "I need my app to do such and such".

The next day, instead of forcing myself to start coding, I can literally say to Intelij Junie (using Claude), exactly that: "I need my app to do such and such". I'm often pleasantly surprised by the outcome. And if there's anything that needs to be tweaked, I'm now in the mode of critiquing and editing.

nevster··on Happy Public Domain Day 2026
The Swallows and Amazons series is wonderful! Highly recommended.
nevster··on Quake's Player Speed (2017)
Watch hours are literally how long someone watches. So if you watch a 2 hour video at 2x, it counts as 1 hour.
nevster··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
Fun!
nevster··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
Thanks!

Fair warning to any others: It's mostly fantasy and sci-fi with the occasional tech book thrown in

nevster··on Skyfall-GS – Synthesizing Immersive 3D Urban Scenes from Satellite Imagery
I'm probably in a minority here. When I read Skyfall-GS, I immediately thought it was some new Apple IIGS game!
nevster··on The Rise and Fall of the Powdered Wig (2020)
Ven vill you vear vigs?
nevster··on M5 MacBook Pro
My 2021 16" M1 Max is at 85% battery - which is still totally fine for me.
nevster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
I should also point out - if you download the current version, you should immediately apply the update that will pop up. And even then, you're results may be flakey.
nevster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
About to start converting this 22 year old Java Swing desktop app to a web app : http://www.auctionsieve.com/

(It's a frontend to make searching eBay actually pleasant)

nevster··on The Story of A Prompt Engineer - The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson [video]
The magic system is kind of like using ChatGPT
nevster··on Neil Armstrong's customs form for moon rocks (2016)

nevster··on The first big AI disaster is yet to happen
"Shall we play a game?"
nevster··on Kermit: A typeface for kids
This site is blocked by Telstra in Australia for supposedly having malicious content!
nevster··on Triforce – a beamformer for Apple Silicon laptops
Unfortunately in practice I've found it sounds not great.
nevster··on Virtual Vette – Racing Simulator Built from Wrecked Corvette
I remember seeing one of these in Chatswood, Sydney, Australia
nevster··on Popeye and Tintin enter the public domain in 2025 along with Faulkner, Hemingway
Hooray for Asterix and Tintin! If anyone here hasn't read Asterix, you definitely should : https://youtu.be/rkNkanTnRwc?si=__EyTehCivEAZlc1
