new_stranger··on Cell Lang: Why yet another programming language?
I know some people are afraid of change and competition, but I'm thrilled everytime someone shares their new language or library. I don't have to learn or use them all, but it's great to basically have unlimited research and approaches to skim on github/gitlab/etc.. for any language and any problem.
new_stranger··on FCC commissioner wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns
Wait, censorship or reduction in choices? They are different concepts with some overlap.

China has the most draconian censorship in the world: lethal censorship. Nothing like the "de-platformed" or "down-voted" censorship Americans face.

new_stranger··on Hell is ourselves
I do too, but from the weight of the idea - not the complexity of the delivery
new_stranger··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Maybe I've read to much history, or maybe I just need to pay more attention to Musk, but I'm pretty sure he isn't anywhere close to the category of "Terrible Human Being" I have in mind - even for the West.
new_stranger··on The silent majority of experts (2012)
Not OP, and just opinion, but I've seen markedly different career and personality/friend/family success. They seem like talented happy people able to take on a wide variety of challenges and do well.

The friends with troubled upbringing often do find success in one area of life, but they seem unstable overall and often crash or stall in multiple other areas.

new_stranger··on Must be this tall to write multi-threaded code (2015)
Assuming you don't need bare-level performance and Go is okay, I love how easy and approachable parallel code is with Go. Locks and channels each offer trade offs you can easily benchmark using the built in go test.

I've written so many different concurrent approaches to workers, pipelines, and multi-stage processing systems and found it always easy to reason through ways to limit the number of workers, prevent duplicate work, and implement backoffs.

new_stranger··on Ask HN: Are companies preparing to end Remote?
> The chair collapses; he is injured. He files for worker's compensation. His company paid no premiums in Illinois, no coverage. Will California cover an out of state injury?

This sounds so American: Insurance and litigation for every little thing.

new_stranger··on Learnings from 5 years of tech startup code audits
And keeping 100% of all features instead of removing the least-used features as you add new ones to keep tech debt from growing indefinitely and reaching a point where new features take months to ship.
new_stranger··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
As a kid I wanted Zelda: Ocarina of Time - but with Pokemon
new_stranger··on Now Monkeypox
The issue is you and I know this, but they don't
new_stranger··on Now Monkeypox
If you were wealthier you would understand the importance of centralized power

new_stranger··on Online Identity
Perhaps a little better, but anything the government does is always subpar

Whatever email server/system the government created would be so bad no one one would use it.

new_stranger··on Best Font for Online Reading: No Single Answer
This died because convention > configuration

Most users do not want to configure fonts or anything really to use the web.

new_stranger··on Results from first US trial of genetically modified mosquitoes
That's the best-case scenario, the worse-case is that in trying to fix a problem we caused, we fail and end up with more problems.

I mean, this isn't news to those of us that write code.

new_stranger··on They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45
Yes, but I think people sometimes confuse the criteria for 'good reasoning' in the moment.

It's easier to paint a prophet as a crackpot if everyone else is putting time and energy into finding fault with them. You can vilify anyone, especially those that look different.

new_stranger··on They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45
The sad thing is that most often, the actual villains trick everyone into thinking it's a different party.

When bad people rise to power, they often do so vilifying one or more other groups. The odds are not in our favor, collectively, we will be tricked as well.

new_stranger··on Court affirms imported beef still allowed to be labeled "Product of USA"
Unfortunately, whatever body you create to watch the body you create that watches the body you create will have people in it that will be the target of lobbing.

You need to some how break through the selection process to appoint people of integrity and put enough safeguards in place to prevent conflicts of interest.

Unfortunately, I don't know of a single time this design worked out in the past and created a working entity.

Corruption is the standard because it's the easiest path. This is true in other arenas like plaintext vs all the work of adding encryption or screen time vs exercising.

All the laws in the world won't fix a mindset or mental attitude.

new_stranger··on New iPhone SE
Took about 10 minutes to install and most of that was just waiting for the os to transfer to the phone. Really easy install guide. Works great. I wouldn't ask grandma to do it, but the technical crowd here probably isn't scared of running a couple cli commands.
new_stranger··on New iPhone SE
I'm not a person with lots of free time that wants to update to the latest and greatest every year.

I now appreciate apple phones knowing I can upgrade when I want and not in 1 year, 9 months when Google/Samsung drop support for my phone.

Also, CalyxOS on Android provides that same concept of support for old pixels if you want to just keep using your phone as-is.

new_stranger··on America produces enough oil to meet its needs, so why do we import crude?
This just hints at how toxic the fracking chemicals used are. It's not just the water, it's the pollution that is compounding this issue. Water always has, and always will recirculate - but pumping dangerous contaminants into our water tables is a big problem that effects current generations as well.
new_stranger··on Google Ads suspended me and turned a deaf ear
Considering there are over 150,000 people working at Google, I would assume the odds one of them would take a bribe to be pretty good. That said, it certainly doesn't prove this has ever happened.
new_stranger··on “Sustainability with Rust” post misleading about Go
I'm really glad to have Rust and Go. I was worried the only way out of startups using scripting languages was Java or C++.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to these great languages! It's so nice to be able to simple things that are such an after-thought in other languages.

new_stranger··on SNES Development Part 1: Getting Started
Great idea, there are so many games that would actually be played with even a basic co-op support like this. It's okay it's just an overlay with no shared-game state, still really fun!
new_stranger··on TikTok shares your data more than any other app and it’s unclear where it goes
tikTok collects data like a great many other companies, unfortunately they aren't just doing it sell more ads.

With a few days of interactions, you can very precisely logically profile a person enough to figure out how to socially engineer them. You also have enough interest and behavioral data to be able setup a blackmail scheme.

It is not hard to imagine how the close integration with the government allows the law enforcement to conduct very skilled operations using the psychological map that can be built about a person.

The CCP is way past knowing if you vote dem/rep or are a 21yr old female.

new_stranger··on Show HN: Download Twitter data without API keys
> Up to 10k rows of data.

uh, how is 10k tweets (1 second of data?) enough?

new_stranger··on Google Is Forcing Me to Dump a Perfectly Good Phone
The Pixel 3 was a great phone. If https://lineageos.org/ or https://calyxos.org/ had been able to come up with an AI assisted camera which could match the Google Camera app (The lens is trash, Google uses software to make good images) then it would have been great.

Benefit of actual quality camera lenses is these open source OS can still provide good photos using a stock android camera app.

new_stranger··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
Truth that never changes is not beneficial for planning. I recommend you find a more useful, relative truth.

Don't get me wrong, it's important you know the real truth, but that isn't often the one you gain much from promoting.

Promoting actual truth can be rather damming at times.

new_stranger··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
You're over-complicating this.

Facts come from studies that have been published which are disproven four years later when finally repeated.

So for a couple years at least, it's always clear what the truth is.

new_stranger··on How to build large-scale end-to-end encrypted group video calls
> needs at least a few hundred million dollars per year to keep going

I'm pretty sure that is not server cost. This is probably the standard approach of companies hiring tons of personal and spending tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands on ads every single day.

new_stranger··on Work/life balance should be difficult
Well, "work" is a broad term. It can mean a paycheck, the gulag, or that todo you've been putting off because you want to finish the show. Lots more as well.

Some are meanings are constructs, but some are limitations of complete communication from a single English world.
