nextlevelwizard··on Starlink limit hits Ukraine's drones
Not surprising considering Trump is Putin's agent and Musk is Trump's agent.
nextlevelwizard··on When did Google get so weird?
TIL I was a normie. I don't get why anyone wouldn't want this if it worked. I don't get enjoyment from the act of searching and clicking through links and verifying. I want to know a thing and if the magic box can tell it to me that would be lovely

You are so wrong that it doesn't even feel right to call you wrong since you are in another universe with its own laws of physics looking into ours wrong.
nextlevelwizard··on Let's make quality the norm again
This just isn't true. What has happened is that companies try to cut costs at every point to make more and more profit since that is what capitalism just does.

There are two ways to submit to capitalism when making products either mass producing the cheapest crap possible with hair thin margins, but since you make so much and they last so little you still make bank.

The other is to make ridiculously over priced luxury goods that rich assholes buy because they want lovingly hand crafted quality instead of the cheap crap, but of course you are marking it up 100-1000 times the price just because you can.

What cannot survive in capitalistic world is the good mid ground of lovingly produced products that actually last and are good quality, because those don't sell as often as they last for a life time or three and you can't gauge the price.

Sure there is a sub section of the economy that literally cannot afford but the cheapest thing, but they need to keep buying same thing year after year as it won't last and thus their children are cursed to suffer the same fate as they cannot inherit any good quality furniture or cars or even houses, everything is just cheaply made consumable with no expectation that it will last longer than a year or two

And hardware to run it and coherence and knowledge to set it up. This feels like insane doomerism.
nextlevelwizard··on Asahi Linux on M3
Yeah... most users do not do that. I would prefer using MacOS forever, but I am under no illusion that it will keep getting supported. But I also use Linux daily so I am not bothered anyway.

Also just please stop fighting against imaginary people.

nextlevelwizard··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Who are these dedicated schizophrenics who are running long term super smart AIs to kill everyone without anyone noticing? Or are you implying that running LLM chatbots will give them this ability?
nextlevelwizard··on Asahi Linux on M3
It turns out people want actually good machines. I have the cheapest M1 Air and it still rocks and isn't power hungry. When Apple stops supporting it I will gladly switch to Asahi if capable.
nextlevelwizard··on 'AI refuser' quit her dream job, and hopes others follow
In current economy it is hard to keep your convictions. I am starting to be on the anti-ai side of the issue, but even without kids to take care of I don’t see myself quitting over it since I need to make as much money as I can before the bad times roll in and I need to rely on unemployment benefits. I don’t think people with families and mortgages are going to join me in any sort of boycott to not risk their jobs.

This battle sadly was lost before I was even born. People let Epstein class get all the power and do whatever they wanted and now it is too late to make a difference. This economy will collapse one way or another and status quo won’t change before that.

nextlevelwizard··on 'AI refuser' quit her dream job, and hopes others follow
In what world does including AI “improve our workplace for all”?

All I see (as a software developer) is bad developers producing way more bad code which just increases my workload as I need to review it, which in turn they will just feed back into the hallucination machine so I just end up remote prompting something until it is “good enough” and I will fix it properly when I next work on that part of the code base.

Managers push everything to AI and to Southeast Asia trying to get things done cheaper without realizing how much technical debt they are taking on. Worst part is that if this continues actual good workers, like myself, will be fired for slowing down progress and in decade either so will be the bad developers as then the managers can just prompt the code or whole software industry will collapse under all this bad code.

Either way I see no improvement for anyone except the Epstein class.

Go nuts

nextlevelwizard··on Everything you do is being recorded
One of the few reasons to use iPhone is that it doesn't constantly surveil you. If Apple would just pivot and say "next iPhone will constantly record everything it hears and sees to process for our AI (Apple Intelligence(tm))" a lot of people would drop iPhone.

Apple Watch is just extension of screen and notifications from the phone, so there is no overlap.

AirTags have nothing to do with AI stuff.

AirPods apparently now have some translation stuff, but again no constant monitoring.

Apple does not produce glasses and seeing the backlash to Meta's glasses I don't think they will. A pin or pendant might be more acceptable, although hiding it will be just as big of an issue as with the creepy Meta glasses, but any AI thing Apple makes should be a separate product if they want to maximize profits.

nextlevelwizard··on Reviving a four year old reMarkable 2
Isn't it insane that we have to "revive" 4 year old devices? How is it unthinkable that even 10 year old device would just work out of the box even if it hasn't seen light of day since it was purchased?
nextlevelwizard··on Show HN: A Handwritten Blogging Platform
Not everything needs to be catered to you. If you dont like it then go away. There are literally thousands of blogging platforms for you to choose from.

Just worrying about having it be perfect already tells where the actual problem is. Everything doesn't need to be polished or edited or perfect. Things can be fun and loose and whimsical. Sure some people can't read my hand writing or they are blind and they can't get to my content, that is life. Again my enjoyment is paramount, not some potential reader. You should be writing for yourself.

nextlevelwizard··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
It is almost like people learn in different ways…
nextlevelwizard··on Show HN: A Handwritten Blogging Platform
Blog posts don’t need to be 5000 words nor do you need to write them on one sitting (or under 30 minutes).

For wrist fatigue having better paper and pen help a lot, but part of it is just using the muscles and not having a death grip.

This being said I don’t like that this is hand writing with a device. It just isn’t the same as actual physical media.

nextlevelwizard··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
If you are just copy pasting off of the board then probably. Hard to say since I have not had experience with both methods in this context.

I still think writing by hand makes stuff stick better especially if you are one of those 500 wpm typists where very little thought goes into typing and it is more like a reflex

nextlevelwizard··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
To each their own. I love my mechanical keyboards and I have never had problems with fountain pens.

My guess is cheapest versions of each are the problem

nextlevelwizard··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Anecdotally from only place where I have experienced both. When playing TTRPGs like Dungeon & Dragons when people fill their character sheets by hand they tend to remember their abilities, features, and spells much better than people who use a fillable PDF and print it out. Even same person with fillable sheet will have to read through it constantly versus them writing it up by hand.

Probably chunk of that is copying vs interpreting, meaning just writing the rule as written vs rewording it to make it more concise and fit your brain, but also part of it definitely is it you remembering where you wrote something down instead of having to scan through bunch of stuff just to find the place you need.

nextlevelwizard··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
I don't think there is an argument in the article that contradicts you. The part about choosing a pen is to point out that pencils and cheap ballpoint pens require more effort than fancy fountain pen. Which is true, but it is mostly commentary about "writer's cramp".

The part about choosing paper is about fountain pens being blotchy where better quality paper helps.

You can write with anything and on anything, but just like how it is much more enjoyable to type on a fancy mechanical keyboard it is more enjoyable to write with fancy fountain pen. Although I prefer gel pens since they are just easier to have a bunch around.

nextlevelwizard··on The git history command
How do I know you don’t work in a big team from this?

First thing I do every time I come back from vacation is to read through our git history to see what has happened.

It is also very useful when CI breaks. In fact I probably use some form of git history reading every day at work.

Also if your code base is so tiny and the features you work on are so small that you can just squash everything then maybe that is fine for you. I definitely love being able to actually see what is going on and selectively cherry picking or reverting commits

nextlevelwizard··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
I have often wondered why my country does not have fast Internet and my own hypothesis is that our phone companies push so hard for mobile data plans that most people just use their phone's Internet for everything. I have seen many people always connecting their laptop and TV and even security cameras to the hotspot provided by their phone, with only mild complaining about how annoying it can be. When I suggest they get a proper home connection they just shrug it off as an extra pointless expense and something only nerds like me care.

We could have so much better connectivity, but average people are happy as long as they can watch <streaming-service>.
