neya··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
> 1. SO question numbers dropped precipitously before AI came along.

This was single-handedly the work of arrogant self-righteous moderators who would close random useful questions as not useful just to prove they were doing something. A lot of us long timers got annoyed at selective enforcement of rules and never looked back. It's sad because it was actually a fun place to hangout. Too much moderation always kills the vibe.

> Apple is the only vertical computer company left from the 1980s.

> Microsoft and Google dabble in hardware and both do nothing but lose money in the hardware area

How is losing money relevant here, you started off the argument by saying Apple is the only vertical computer company left. Which is clearly not true and as your own comment contradicts.

You should try using a Surface Pro once. It is what the MacBook Pro is becoming now, only it is 5 years ahead. Yes, Windows sucks. But, the form factor and its usability is unmatched. I wouldn't just write it off as "dabbling".

What build quality? You must be joking. My M3 Pro is at the service center as of this moment for touch ID replacement. Because, apparently the quality of the harness is so bad it gives up in under 2 years of ownership - google it, it's a known issue. Next, the cheap ass 5V regulator fries if you actually try to as much as use a phone connected to it for long periods. This was a known issue across multiple generations. This is a tech forum, ass kissing a giant corporation that doesn't care about you should be the last thing one would expect to read here.
neya··on New York Times adds more AI features to its Cooking app. Users aren't thrilled
Holy red herring. That revenue number isn't from people checking out recipes..or making them
neya··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
WTF is even a "unified product"?

It's a fucking laptop. All laptops are "unified products". Stop throwing random jargon to cover up for the lack of merit to your argument.

neya··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Because, Macs are the only products and the rest which use OLEDs since 2016 aren't, right?
neya··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I have 3 Macs running. I love them, but that doesn't mean I can't criticise them for falling behind.
neya··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Welcome to 2016. Lightweight OLED displays have been in the market since a decade ago, but now we are praising Apple for catching up 10 years later for a laptop with a "pro" moniker? Damn, the Apple ass-kissing here never disappoints.

neya··on 'Forced out': HOA fees to rise to $2,500 a month
> Read the article. The HOA was a few hundred a month. Now it's 10x as much.

Read my comment, I specifically mentioned about not getting a house with an HOA in the first place. Again, if you chose a house that's in a HOA, it's on you.

> This is beyond predatory.

Of course, they're predatory, what did you think was it about? It's always someone with a power trip sitting on their boards. For a "HN contrarian", you sure get upset about a logical argument.

neya··on 'Forced out': HOA fees to rise to $2,500 a month
Exactly, they aren't ready to admit their poor decisions have consequences.
neya··on 'Forced out': HOA fees to rise to $2,500 a month
Honestly, if you bought a house that was part of a HOA, it's on you. Like, what did you think was going to happen?

Where did you see this? The acoustics in your head must be wild:))

Reading comprehension is important. There was no inverse take here. Just pointing out anecdotal evidence isn't enough to draw a conclusion over a larger sample size.

"I don't have an issue with it, so most people also don't have an issue with it"

False Consensus Effect (or false consensus fallacy):

It happens when someone overestimates how much other people agree with them, assuming that their own personal beliefs, values, or experiences are the default for everyone else.

neya··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
Did you miss the part about "But we do good work" ?

In his twisted mind, he did nothing wrong, therefore no apology needed. It's a classic case of delusion mixed with relative morals and pretty much it's the best case of "Rules for thee, but not for me". Because, he blurred his house on Google maps, because, privacy is fundamental...just for him. Fuck everyone else.

neya··on Be a Tech Bro
You missed the point completely "bro", he does address this:

> Their interest in computers, or their skill with them, is not the problem.

An inflated sense of self-importance can be with anyone, including other genders, not just tech "bros".

neya··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
I think so, but, only if you differentiate in the privacy angle (think Proton vs GMail) and this is similar to how most enterprise GIT offerings work, too. The risk is GitHub offering to existing orgs who are already on Office 365 a self-hosted version (I think they already do). So, this business model will fail in the SWOT analysis itself. Still, there might be some looking to exit MS office ecosystem, it might make more sense for them.

> making sure your own shit doesn't get pwned is a full time job.

Not if you didn't vide code your architecture. I have a 7 year box running without a single incident (touchwood) because 7 years ago we didn't have vibe coding and I used a compiled language. To use PHP for anything serious in 2026 is just insane, let's be honest.

neya··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
Thank you, just looking at it. Looks awesome so far. Thanks so much!
neya··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
So, the solution is just "suck it up and deal with it"? We pay good money to Microsoft for some of our client orgs and defending this level of piss poor reliability is just cope in the name of support for FOSS. I don't see why this should be accepted. This is mainly because their shitstorm that's Azure.
neya··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
Good. I want everyone to do this. I want to see the downfall of Microsoft. Time and again they've proved that anything they touch can't be trusted nor reliable. I am tired of this. They even bully their users - on Mac OS, GitHub desktop doesn't respect the word "no". It installs all kinds of helpers and acts like borderline spyware. Someone created an issue about it on Github and the MS employees told them to fuck off in corporate[1]

I am even considering hosting my own GIT server myself. Some of our deployments got affected multiple times in the last 6 months alone we were really caught off-guard. Thankfully our clients were understanding of the GitHub outages. But, this should not be the baseline. Reliability should not be the cost of doing business.

neya··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
> Vote with your wallet. Fuck them.

Easier said than done. Because, "Apple can do no wrong" is the general public perception. Look at any wrongdoing by Apple - whether they were caught slowing down the phones, degrading cameras on purpose or even the lawsuit where they were caught spying on people's voice recordings. There will always be some NPC defending them as if the billion dollar corporation gives a shit about them.

That or "Apple is the only pro-privacy company in the world" despite there being an active lawsuit against them for the exact opposite.

So, I say: Vote with your wallet. Fuck them...and the fanboys.

neya··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business

With over 17 years of expertise, eMudhra is a global provider of digital identity, trust, and security solutions, enabling secure digital transformation for banks and financial institutions (BFSI),
So, you were in business for 17 years and still decided to use plaintext number "4" for your private key?

The company’s Global digital signature certificate (DSC), eSign, and other signing services, including those in India, its enterprise PKI Solutions (emCA, CertiNext platforms), emSigner eSignature Suite, and its identity and authentication solutions (SecurePass, emAS) are not affected and continue to operate as normal.
Oh yeah, I'm sure the other customers are sipping their bobba tea reading about this instead of thinking "are we next?"

Fuck these clowns, in India to get an import/export license you had get a hardware key via USB from them to access the government portal. Worse yet, their website is designed to look eerily similar to a government website and a lot of people won't even be able to tell it's a private entity.

Now imagine, all the customers who had purchased this key from them have their private details exposed. There was absolutely no mention of this anywhere. Not even as much as an apology. This letter is full of arrogance, deflection and insult to injury. I hope they burn to their ground. It's a really shame the government isn't even stepping in to do anything about this as their customers are the ones that are most impacted because they mandated the stupid hardware key requirement. What a joke of a situation.

In any other country, everyone involved would be fired and there would be serious consequences for such a level of breach (Eg. Equifax). In India, even a class action suit would lead nowhere and the fact that these assholes would be operational still despite this is extremely infuriating.

neya··on PingCap TiDB Leaks
Pingcap's statement:

With support from outside counsel and third-party forensic specialists, there is no evidence that data stored in TiDB was impacted. We keep on investigating and will provide updates on any new findings.

They have the fucking data in a tarball and Pingcap claims no data was impacted. This sounds like the bad blood story part 2 all over again.
neya··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
True. From the breach, it was discovered, they had lat long coordinates of each customer. Along with their credit cards and order values. So, in theory, if you were a hacker, you could target people by their financial situation, family size and the locality they lived in. Their shitty CEO/CTO didn't as much as even disclose to the affected customers. Some of them only found out after their card was charged for unauthorized amounts.
neya··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
These clowns were responsible for getting a key as part of the process of getting an import/export license in India. It used to be a requirement to get a USB hardware key from them. India doesn't have any stringent data protection laws, so nothing will happen to them, even. None of their customers will actually even get to know about this incident unless they hear about it from elsewhere as most of the times, Indian companies never communicate such breaches to their customers (Eg. Domino's Pizza India had a massive breach and they never even sent as much as an email). It's really a sad state for privacy.
neya··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
