nkrisc··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
> but Anthropic has a great product.

Give me $100 billion and I will make the greatest pencil sharpener that has ever existed, and possibly that will ever exist.

nkrisc··on I'm so bad at billiards that I ended up in the hyperbolic plane [video]
That’s not entirely true. There are parts of mathematics that have useful real world applications. Sometimes even the parts we thought were esoteric and abstract turn out to have applications that were not conceived of yet at the time of discovery.

What is “pure” energy?
nkrisc··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
That’s the risk. You can write it down or otherwise store it, but you’re trading one risk for another.
nkrisc··on The Great American Rascal: Tom Sawyer at 150
That feels like a broad generalization, but in either case that’s cultural. The underlying desires are still there, whether expressed or not.
nkrisc··on I'm so bad at billiards that I ended up in the hyperbolic plane [video]
How so? I think applied mathematics is the exception.

I’m pretty sure cryptocurrency enthusiasts are a small minority of cryptocurrency users.
nkrisc··on The Great American Rascal: Tom Sawyer at 150
Sure, the plot devices might be rendered moot by technological change but the underlying motivations remain the same.

Technology has changed, but humans haven’t.

nkrisc··on Utah charges Kalshi and its CEO with illegally promoting online gambling
It would turn the poor into organ farms for the rich. It would also further incentive coercive organ sales and provide cover for forced organ sales.
nkrisc··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Commit it to memory, the original kind.
nkrisc··on Utah charges Kalshi and its CEO with illegally promoting online gambling
Fine, but first we must eliminate all poverty.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
To simplify: it’s essentially work X hours per week, performing the job duties described for the position, the specifics of which will be supplied to you by your boss (they tell you what to do).

If your boss believes you are performing a satisfactory amount of work for the time spent, you keep your job. If not, or they just don’t like you for some reason not protected by law, you lose your job.

You do what they tell you and hope they are happy with the results.

nkrisc··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
No you do the opposite: you don’t charge those whose underlying values and beliefs you agree with. Everyone has broken some law.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
So it’s there for them when they’re no longer a temporarily embarrassed millionaire.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
> I can now easily work every waking minute, and some sleeping minutes, at a level approximately comparable to my prior 8h workload from 10 years ago.

That is not something that should be celebrated.

It is a warning sign.

nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
I agree, but I was commenting on things as I believe they currently are.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
I do recall, I’m more surprised anyone would believe it.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Good thing all employers are rational.
nkrisc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
The opening premise baffles me. What kind of illusion must one be under to believe that employers would ever pay you the same amount of money to do less work?

Realistically there were only ever two possible outcomes: you do more work for the same amount of money, or you’re one of the ones who were laid off and your work was transferred to the former.

The only way it will result in less work and the same or better quality of life is if you’re self-employed or are employed by a compassionate human. Sadly that does not apply to the majority of people.

nkrisc··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
That’s not even remotely in the same ballpark. South America had already been inhabited by humans for roughly 50,000 years by the time Europeans showed up. And of course “European man” had no problem inhabiting South America once they decided to.
nkrisc··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
We are exploring. We no longer need humans to explore. I’m sure humans will eventually explore Mars, but we’re nowhere near ready for that. And likely won’t be in our lifetime.

If we can’t even return rocks from Mars, how are we ever getting a person back? It’s not even a given that we could get a human to Mars alive.

If people with your mindset were in charge, I think we would get there sooner, but there would be many lives lost and untold money wasted first. For what? To plant a flag?

nkrisc··on How to grow a cacao tree at home (2024)
The only part of the fruit you’d eat unprocessed is the pulp around the seeds. It’s pretty nice, but nothing extraordinary.

I don’t think anyone uses cacao seeds for anything except for processing.

nkrisc··on How to grow a cacao tree at home (2024)
There is significant processing required to go from cacao to chocolate.
nkrisc··on ChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support Problems
Good. I think society as a whole has swung too far towards the internet and all things online.

I hope AI will help things swing back away from the internet.

nkrisc··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
These aren’t the only two protesters shot by federal agents in the past year, they’re just two that died from it. More have been shot and killed, but they were targets of ICE stops, not protesters.

There are more cases of people being shot by ICE agents, then charged, then charges dropped because agents lied and/or evidence was tampered with or destroyed.

I watched the videos of Good and Pretti being killed. It looked like vengeful executions than anything else. It should deeply bother everyone of any political party.

nkrisc··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
Data centers and Flock are the two things uniting left and right protesters.
nkrisc··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
Good did not hit an officer with her car, and was driving away from him when she was shot through the side window of her car.

Pretti was legally armed and was shot and killed while face down on the ground.

This is all corroborated with video and contradicts statements from the involved federal agents. Charitably they were “mistaken”, realistically they lied to cover themselves.

There are many more instances where federal agents lied about what happened and their accounts were later refuted by eyewitness testimony and video. Just in those cases the victims did not die. Look up all the cases that were thrown out of court because government’s case rested on falsehoods.

nkrisc··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
It is exciting, but the fact we’re not sending humans on suicide trips to Mars doesn’t mean space exploration is “dead”.
nkrisc··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
Why? What are you going to do on Mars?

For the cost and effort of a single manned Mars mission we could learn much, much more by sending many robotic missions, including returning samples.

From a scientific perspective there is currently little reason to send humans anywhere.

You can argue we’ve explored space much more than we would ever have if we focused on manned missions, making space exploration more alive than when we sent humans to the moon.
