nkron··on Show HN: Unsure Calculator – back-of-a-napkin probabilistic calculator
Really cool! On iOS there's a noticeable delay when clicking the buttons and clicking the backspace button quickly zooms the page so it's very hard to use. Would love it in mobile friendly form!
nkron··on Show HN: I built a free forms service for static websites
This looks really nice but I was burned by another free form service (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16466147) that just disappeared without any notice.

I ended up switching to using a Google script which I've been happy with so far: https://github.com/dwyl/learn-to-send-email-via-google-scrip...

nkron··on Nearly Half of Americans Are Lonely
I tried to sign up but couldn't get past the street sign captcha. I tried three times... Google is making it hard these days.
nkron··on Show HN: A CSS Grid generator for building layouts faster
Using 'data-area' requires modifying the html so it is not a css only approach. This is a fairly big turn off for me.
nkron··on TurboTax Freemium Funnel: Critical Analysis and UX Teardown
I tried https://www.freetaxusa.com this year since I dislike Intuit so much for their lobbying. The site works very well and has a pretty similar flow to TurboTax except no auto import of financial account info.

I'm not sure the trustworthiness of the company/site. I didn't see any red flags in the privacy policy but would love to hear from others if they've used this.

nkron··on Jevons paradox
Here's my favorite example of that:

http://blog.chriszacharias.com/page-weight-matters

YouTube increased the efficiency of their site which ended up increasing average page load time - more people across the globe could now use the site when before it was too slow to bother with.

nkron··on Colorizing black and white photos with deep learning
Very cool results. Seems like with some extra human intervention this would produce very good results.

Shameless plug: I built an online tool to colorize photos using WebGL. It's all manual but it's easy to get started and doesn't require any additional software. http://www.colorizephoto.com

nkron··on Show HN: ColorizePhoto.com – WebGL Based Photo Colorizing Tool
I just saw the front page post about automatically colorizing photos (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10864801) and thought I should share this website I built a couple years ago. It allows grabbing color from a reference photo and painting it onto the black and white image you wish to color. It was a fun learning experience and can make some pretty convincing photos with a bit of patience.

ECMAScript 2016 adds Math.trunc()[0] which should give the same value as | 0 for inputs that fit in 32 bits.

nkron··on Why I’m dumping Google Chrome
I'm glad to hear they are forcing updates now. A family member's computer had some extension/malware that disabled auto update of Chrome so they were several versions behind. It seems like this policy is there to prevent malware from being able to lock down Chrome.

nkron··on ES6 generators in depth
It's the other way around. ES6 needs to support loading ES5 content. They can't make 'generator' a keyword because it was a perfectly fine variable name in ES5.

I wasn't sure what you meant by this so I had to look up some details:

nkron··on Eloquent JavaScript, Second Edition
That's neat, generally I like physical books better but that really shows the potential of ebooks. I've been working on something similar for the JavaScript/browser APIs (http://www.javascripture.com) since I learn a lot better when running code myself.
nkron··on 3D Lightning Reconstruction (2013)
I think he used something like z = c * dy since earlier in the post he mentioned the photos were from a similar direction but different elevations. He compared this to your how your eyes compute distance but in this case the difference is vertical.

And don't forget "In this case because the precise location and elevation of the photographers isn't known this is slightly more art than science, but it is still fun!"

nkron··on 3D Lightning Reconstruction (2013)
The lighting discharge happens very quickly (a few microseconds [1]) so it's unlikely you'll get the same shifting you see in that video. The exposure time of the camera in that dim light was probably much longer than the time of the lightning discharge.

nkron··on Ask HN: Looking for contributors?
http://www.javascripture.com - Simple/fast interactive JS API documentation

I started this project a few years ago because I was frustrated with existing JavaScript documentation being too complicated and I wanted a simple way to test out APIs without spinning up a new browser tab/text editor. I finished the basic JavaScript APIs (Array/String/Object/etc) and started adding docs for some more advanced types as I used them myself. Now there are a lot of APIs without descriptions or examples. I would love assistance with filling in missing documentation/examples and possibly translating this site to other languages. If I can get a few people's interest in contributing (here or at http://www.javascripture.com/contribute) I will put the project up on github.

nkron··on Realistically colorized historical photos
Wow, these are really good. I made a website to help colorize photos since I don't have photoshop. It's http://www.colorizephoto.com if you want to try yourself.
nkron··on Ask HN: Webdevs, designers: what devtools should we (Mozilla) build in Firefox?
I would love to an allocation profiler that reports garbage. .Net has the CLRProfiler which tracks allocations over time and can show where you are creating a lot of temporary allocations. CLRProfiler is a great tool and I haven't found anything like it in the web world yet.

Web Components sounds great but doesn't seem to be supported anywhere. Once people can use them, they will start making lists like this.
nkron··on Census to launch API for demographic, economic app builders next month
I recently spent a bunch of time looking for a basic list of cities & populations for my latest personal project (list of sales tax rates per city: http://www.sale-tax.com) so I'm glad to hear there might be another option. I tried their fact finder website site (http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtm...) but it is really difficult to navigate and they cap the number of rows you can download at a time.

If anyone else is looking for this kind of data, the 2000 census places file at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/gazetteer/places2k.html is pretty good but has a lot of Census Designated Places (CDPs) which might not line up exactly with towns/villages. I eventually settled on using the data at http://www.geonames.org. Geonames has a bunch of data but isn't perfect - I've seen misspellings and places without population data. It's not to hard to edit the data on their site though.

nkron··on Ask HN: What are you Building?
Not very exciting, but I'm experimenting with a site to list sales tax rates by city: http://www.sale-tax.com. It's been fun to play with scraping government forms, SEO, and adsense. Maybe next year around tax time it will even be useful to people :)
nkron··on Are Web Development Search Results Being Manipulated?
http://javascripture.com is a pretty quick reference for just javascript. http://dochub.io has MDN docs plus some others in a nice, consistent view.
