nmridul··on Norway wealth fund to vote for human rights report at Microsoft, against Nadella
Yes, its general purpose compute. But if you or me use Azure for illegal purpose (pirated content, tax evasion, violence etc etc..), for sure Microsoft won't be sitting idle.
nmridul··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
> ..... he calls on the EU to activate an existing blocking regulation (Regulation (EC) No 2271/96) for the International Criminal Court, which prevents third countries like the USA from enforcing sanctions in the EU. EU companies would then no longer be allowed to comply with US sanctions if they violate EU interests. Companies that violate this would then be liable for damages.

That is from that article..

Here you can mostly dyi the repair. So you are not stuck waiting for Apple's appointment and repair schedule which would be a week at the minimum that you are grounded. Plus easy upgradeability ..

nmridul··on What could happen to your TikTok app on Jan. 19
>>> In that scenario the app won’t "magically disappear" from phones, CNET tech reporter Abrar Al-Heeti told Yahoo Finance, but experts said its performance could weaken over time because TikTok’s parent won’t be able to make app store updates.

>>> “The practical effect is, in the short run, what's going to happen is new users won't be able to download the app in any of the marketplaces,”

nmridul··on See how a lab-grown diamond is made
Just wondering how much does these machines cost and why we are we not making such machines at large scale ? Surely diamonds are in demad beyond jewellery. So making these machines at scale and reducing their cost could disrupt these "scammers"..

nmridul··on Carbon footprint of homegrown food five times greater than conventional
I am Just guessing. Maybe it's the tap water. It goes through multiple rounds of filteration to make it suitable for drinking and now it's poured into the soil that does not require so pure water. Or it could be the pot itself.. a large pot along with the stands and accessories to grow a dozen plants will be less green compared to open farming .

Could be that reusing waste water or using greener pots could reduce it and yet have more carbon footprint than open farming..

nmridul··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
Amazon needs something sticky included in prime. An email or very generous photo storage. This is what keeps many people stuck with Gmail and outlook. Else amazon is soon going to see huge drop in prime subscribers.

From the comments here, looks like fast shipping and streaming are not sticky enough for most people.

nmridul··on Remote work requires communicating more, but less frequently
In my project (30+ members) we have team members located in multiple locations (6+ cities in 4 countries). And for the last 2+ years I am the only one working from my country. While our company is 500+ strong in this country, for this particular project I am the only one.

So interactions with the project team is fully remote.

I am sure even pre-covid many MNCs might have a similar structure with members spread across different location. Though coming to office, but project work happens remotely. Also have juniors joining the team.

It might be difficult for juniors to get started. But not impossible to handle.

nmridul··on Firefox address bar
One reason why I prefer to use firefox at work. I can type some part of the title and it finds the Jira tickets/ confluence link easily from my history. Chrome would take me to search page and the search returns nothing since it cannot find anything from the locally hosted jira/confluence.

The poster you are replying to could possibly be Indian. Possibly this could be one reason (Disclaimer - I am just assuming and not answering for him)

In India last name could mean anything ranging your "caste" / religion / community / god / place / family / fathers name / or any other random stuff.

Singh is a common last name and if you go to some parts and call Mr. Singh and possibly 100's would respond. And there are people with surname "Bangalore" because they were born there.

And in my part of South India, some of our last name is "First name" of our parents (mostly Father.. nowadays people also started adding their mother's first name). So my name is "My first name" + "My father's first name. And my son is named "Son's first name" + "My First name". It continues this way.

So most of us use the First name to mention someone. And you can see many Indian's making the mistake of addressing some one as "Mr. First name" though the proper usage is "Mr. Last name".

I had this difficulty when in Germany a government office asked why I have a different surname from my kid's and I had a hard time explaining it :)

nmridul··on Nobody’s using CBDCs – India’s piloting one anyway
Maybe transaction wise paper money is still a small percentage.

But my understanding (correct me if wrong) is that the total money running in the country at any momemnt is never more than what is printed.

With digital money the central bank can issue it without the cost to print. As per (1) it costs around Rs 10 to Rs 17 to print Rs 100 note and have to be reprinted once they get damaged.

nmridul··on ‘Gold hydrogen’ is an untapped resource in depleted oil wells
This.. It stuck me when I saw Aramco (Saudi oil major) advertising Hydrogen tech on TV.

The brown and black hydrogen will be far cheaper than green hydrogen for some time. They also have the advantage of existing subsidised infrastructure for drilling and pumping. And when the hydrogen vehicles and Power stations become common, the common man have no choice but to purchase this cheaper hydrogen
