nolanbrown23··on Hanging up my spurs
No, he's not squandering anything. He's placing a higher value on time with his kids and wife than on time with an "ambitious" founder. No one deserves anything or is required to do anything.
nolanbrown23··on Reverse Engineering the BMW I3 API
I did this on my 2015 3 series which provides access to a lot of cool APIs as well but performance data is accessible only for the i3. The best use I could find for the API was an iOS extension to easily send Maps locations directly to my car for use with the built-in navigation system.

nolanbrown23··on The Story of My Desk
I built my own desk last year because of the expense of a new desk and the fact that all the desks I looked at weren't quite the right size for what I wanted.

I've been using it every day for over a year and the desk has withstood a barrage of abuse much better then previous desks I've owned. If you have the space to build one, I highly recommend building one to match your exact specifications.

Here a blog post about how I built it: http://nolanbrown.com/howto/2012/12/19/desk-build/

nolanbrown23··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2013)
VINDICO Group - San Francisco, CA or Irvine, CA

I'm hiring an Android Engineer and a iOS Engineer for my team to help build tools for developers to make mobile advertising better.

As the first ad management platform dedicated exclusively to video, VINDICO allows advertisers to serve, track and measure all of their online video ad activity. Since 2006, VINDICO has been the gold standard in online video platforms, providing standardized reporting and analytics for the online video industry. The power of online video isn't just the audiences it reaches and how it reaches them. Its strength also derives from its ability to track an ad campaign and precisely measure the campaign’s effectiveness.

nolanbrown23··on What do technical managers do, anyway?
This is one of the best answers here. As a technical manager I go to meetings so my team doesn't have to. I answer the emails and questions so my team doesn't have to. The code I work on is to support my team and keep the little stuff off their plate and to make their job easier. I prioritize work based on what they're currently working on so they aren't moving from one part of the code base unnecessarily while still managing the external team priorities. I act as a coach/recruiter to hire the best team possible and give them the tools they need to succeed.

TL;DR; I prevent interruptions: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5092589

nolanbrown23··on Why Entrepreneurs Should Not Buy Homes
Buying home is not for everyone but renting is NOT always better. It's better when you only need a studio or 1 bedroom but once you have a family and children, renting a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment make no financial sense. In San Francisco, I'm looking at $1000 more in rent going from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom and can expect that to continue going up.

If you buy smart (i.e. not at the top end of your budget) with the intention to pay off your mortgage (not sell/buy every 3-7 years), you're in a far better position then someone who still has ~1/3 of their monthly income still going out the door. Even if you don't pay off your mortgage, you have the possibility to refinance, reducing your monthly nut making it far easier to survive as an entrepreneur.

nolanbrown23··on The Wrath Against Khan: Why Some Educators Are Questioning Khan Academy
I can't find the article that moment, but in it there was a teacher who used kahn academy videos as the "homework" and then class time for further explanation, practice problems and most importantly, questions from students.

I like this approach for a number of reason but imagine your child with an iPad watching several lesson videos a night. It makes the "homework" significantly easier to manage (i.e. rewind videos, rewatch difficult parts, and parents watching together to help with concepts) when compared to traditional worksheet homework. By shifting the conceptual learning work to the home, students are able to get a better experience from one-on-one work with their parents, and then handle the practice and application of knowledge to the school room which, in general, the teacher is better suited to handle.

nolanbrown23··on New MacBook Air Now Available on Apple Store
If they aren't custom configured I think it's easy to send them back for new ones. I thought Apple typically let you exchange without fees if you bought within 30 days of a refresh.
nolanbrown23··on New MacBook Air Now Available on Apple Store
Echoing the sentiments of the other 11" owners, I love my 11" MBA. It's not perfect but it's close enough for the time being.

I just bought a brand new 11" with a bigger SSD and the i7 and the only thing I wish was different was the amount of RAM. If it had 8GB RAM, then it would easily be the best computer I've ever owned.

nolanbrown23··on HelloFax (YC W11) kills the fax machine, but it's really about e-signatures
I had the opportunity to meet the two founders the day they got accepted to YC and when they were telling me what working on, I was already canceling my efax account in my mind. Yesterday when I had to fax documents to a bank and Scottrade, it was actually a pleasant experience. The only thing I wish I could have done was prepare a fax and have a link to send to my wife so she could sign the documents as well.

Even though all the talk is about the Verizon iPhone, the vacation blackout is for Apple employees, so couldn't it just as likely be the iPad 2. We know for sure that an iPad 2 is coming but the Verizon iPhone is still just hot air (and has been for the past year).
