nonstopdev··on OpenAI boss Sam Altman tells Congress he fears AI is ‘harm’ to the world
While yes, these black boxes that are created with unknown methods and biases is worrisome, letting a CEO of a major company provide regulations to prevent competition in the space never seems to workout well.
nonstopdev··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Love how these big tech companies are using congress fears to basically let them define rules for anyone to compete with them.
nonstopdev··on Chess is booming among teens
I used to love chess as a teenager. Chess club and playing Battle Chess on my early computer.

I started picking it up now and the resources to find games are great with Chess.com and Lichess but have found myself trying to relearn the skills and reading after losing 100 straight games.

nonstopdev··on Florida Legislature approves carrying a concealed loaded gun without a permit
Oh boy. Can’t wait to see the gun “experts” chime in here with this type of article on Hacker News for something that states already passed.
nonstopdev··on Tether ownership and company weaknesses revealed in documents
They really haven’t had a run on the pyramid to deal with issues. Each broken exchange has been bought by the next bigger one. Most big crypto money has cashed and just holding so I feel they haven’t seen the bankrun to break them where funds need to redeem Tether for real currency.
nonstopdev··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
Are there any metrics how much an average Spotify user generates for profit and where they turn as a loss?

With a fixed monthly fee, how much listening each month does it take before your customers are unprofitable for you similar to the Netflix problem.

nonstopdev··on British Police to screen suspects for signs gambling addiction is driving crime
Too much of anything ruins lives.

There are plenty of people who use moderate amounts of enjoyable things like alcohol, gambling, unhealthy foods, and drugs. There will always be outliers who can’t control their consumption and have lives ruined by it.

nonstopdev··on FTX held less than $1B in liquid assets against $9B in liabilities
Fractional reserves exist in finance and are held in various assets that can be hedged and also redeemed. Based on the liabilities that FTX revealed like funding Alameda for their investments in un-hegable bets like “Donald Trump losing” is not normal where they could never get those funds back if there was a bank run.
nonstopdev··on Ask HN: NDA for Interview
You won’t get anymore interviews if you don’t sign it. Make sure to read it, but most are pretty standard and just cover if you are exposed to non-public information that you need to keep it quiet especially if they are public.
nonstopdev··on Ask HN: Who wants to build a better dating website?
Tried it a few years ago with the concept of having a picture blurred and profile information required. As you messaged back and forth the pictures became unblurred gradually to spawn more conversations. Hinge kinda had a more conversation based concept and exploded so gave up the dev on it.
nonstopdev··on AWS Activate is now open to all startups
Wish Google would have something similar. AWS has been a huge help but there are a few services Google just kills it at.
nonstopdev··on What Happened to Amazon Prime 2-Day Shipping?
Have mine set to not renew anymore. Their products have been falling apart too.

More delays and returns than ever, slow shipping, and if you ever need support, it has turned into a black hole where you can’t get anyone to help. Had a gift card they confirmed wasn’t activated and bought through them directly and has been a struggle to get any refund or answer.

nonstopdev··on Ask HN: If I enter account or order in a phone tree, why am I asked again?
Working in the industry, lots of companies rely on outsourced work through Business Process Outsourcers. Basically you are calling Target or another company and in their internal system probably run by Avaya or Cisco on ancient hardware and only can process limited inputs like DTMF/Touch and a tree format. When you transfer to a person, that agent works in a different region/office/company and on a different system. Since they transfer through a phone number, no data passes so they have no idea who you are and chances are have a different system that sees a limited set of information to handle your call.

Telephony is a cost center for most companies and the work to build clean experiences for callers is not a priority so a lot of companies have these broken systems and spending money maintenance to keep them running instead of understanding how a proper experience for someone helps their business and brand.

nonstopdev··on Ask HN: Where to meet people who are interested in building a company together?
YCs startup school has a founder match section you can put what you want and looking for as well as filter out by hours willing to commit. There is a lot of people looking for developers but also a good chunk that has some off shore investment and MVP going and pretty exciting to see.
nonstopdev··on Ask HN: iOS app for playing MP3 music collection?
I always liked VOX for simple music playing. Even without premium seems actually usable without a ton of ads.
nonstopdev··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
Was interviewing with a few startups in the Series A and B phases. They had come back and held all hiring.

Their time to zero is in the 2-3 year range but a lot of companies are dealing with a people issue to make sure staff is aware of the state and has confidence they aren’t going to get laid off.

Most seem to have held for 3-4 weeks. Will see at that point how many are paused indefinitely or are back to normal.

If a company is near the end of the runway, they maybe in damage control and would be concerning.
