The spread is designed to make the bet a 50/50 so it would need to take into other factors or compute it’s spread to determine if there is an edge on Vegas.
Just because a hurricane hits Miami doesn't mean the entire state feels it. It rains, streets may get backed up with water around the sewer just like there was a thaw of snow in northern states. You would be surprised how much of a city on the water is not in a flood zone.
You want to live on the water, you are mandatory to pay the fees to maintain insurance if you have a loan or if you own, you can roll the dice and not. Each storm causes areas that may have not been hit in decades to have higher premiums and areas that have never felt a storm in decades that are older builds get knocked down and rebuilt with new code and higher up to prevent another wipe out.
Most damage is from flooding due to storm surge which exists on coastlines. Wind and power outages happen and can take down trees just like elsewhere in the world but the massive destruction is caused by the force and amount of water on the coasts.
Building codes exist on probability of what can happen. When buildings were built, they had codes to follow based on the current time. When they are destroyed, they are rebuilt with new codes such as on stilts, better windows, different materials, etc. It isn’t like we just keep building the same building and expect things to change.
If you do live on the coast anywhere in the US, it should be a general assumption that at some point, that water is gonna be in your house or that your house is gonna be taken out by the water over its existence.
Even when Windows 7 was active, there were plenty of projects trying to bring Windows XP and Aero to Linux GUIs.
As adults realize more and more people are not daily Facebook users, invites has gone back to other platforms like eVite but overall, the lack of seeing the latest TikTok trend is much better mentally and productivity wise than endlessly scrolling through content I don’t care about.
Chrome in a sandbox with devtools is the only thing i miss and need occasionally but they have really shifted from the original Chromium branch.
- Jump on morning standup calls. Some are active and some aren’t so use the secondary ones to start breakfast consisting of eggs, protein, and some fruit.
- Make coffee. I wait 90-120 minutes before I drink any caffeine from waking up.
- Work on short higher priority items that I noted from the night before until noon and hit the gym to break up the day.
Also, it’s not that remote. Diplo and Chris Rock walked 5 miles out of the site and got picked up and driven back so while the situation does suck, it’s not like they are alone in the great white north 100 miles from civilization. It’s off a road only a few miles.
Basically use the old website on a laptop once every few weeks now and never engage with any content anymore. Mostly check news, click a link maybe, and move on but has been replaced by other information sources.
Airlines, internet providers, larger companies like Amazon and Meta can run on such low quality support because face it, most people will continue to use them.
Coinbase even offers “24/7 priority support” if you subscribe to their monthly plan.
The industry is a mess but companies are starting to move the traditional contact center as you mentioned focused on just limiting the complaints and placing a bandaid on the problems to make them go away and turning into a fully personalized experience where calls and feedback help feed the entire customer experience. Metrics typically looked at such as higher hold times are not as highly weighted as the reasons and how often someone is calling and helping really drive a lot of companies in a positive way.
Wasn’t that the whole point of all these new apps?
This anti pattern exists all over.
Look at any school in a lower income area and it’s plagued with issues of attendance, resources of things like access to technology, commitment of parents to help their kids outside of the classroom with homework, and general safety that fails to provide a quality learning space for children to become qualified when they leave school.
Since you can’t put massive school reform with budgets and funding to provide this to schools in a political cycle of 2-4 years, we just keep kicking the can down the road and accept instead of helping build better youth who all can compete for jobs and colleges, let’s just lower the bar and make it seem like we are doing something.
A lot of companies start small by people who like what they do. It’s the business leader or visionary who sees the future and how to apply it on the larger scale usually leaving the loyalty and honor behind and doing what’s best for them and their company.
While a regulation and mandates usually requires an employer to keep extra records, cause confusion for a lot of smaller companies trying to comply based on each different governments rules, as well as generate more government costs to enforce, the Texas heat is nothing to mess with just as in many states in the south.
I would think an employer who has crews working in the heat would want their crews to be rested and hydrated. Someone handing heavy machinery and passes out, or god forbid, dies on a job would crush that company and cause hell on the general costs of insurance. Also with the number of construction companies, ones that basically tell their staff they can’t drink water I would have to believe quickly will find no one will want to work for.
Also, if you want to play games on Steam, you need a PC capable of running them so if I am dumping a few thousand into a PC as well, would rather get the higher rated Steam headset for a few hundred more than the Meta.
Lastly, I don’t trust Facebook at all. I think the recent update was the first you didn’t need an account but some people I talk to like me are sketched out of a device staring at your face and expressions and wasn’t rated too high for privacy.
