notjes··on Show HN: Guitoro, a virtual guitar you strum with your keyboard
fantastic!
notjes··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
[flagged]
notjes··on Agents don't need memory, they need documentation
And then a random model/reasoning setting has a stroke and pollutes it all with ai slop.
notjes··on Low-Tech Ceramic Water Filter
Got hackernewsd
notjes··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
We can /model, but when can we /harness?
notjes··on DeepSeek costs OpenCode Go user $1.14/day; dual DGX breaks even in 24 years
Since the announcement of DeepSeek price hike, I have been using MiniMax M3 and I am really surprised by the quality this model spits out. Subjectively speaking, the bullshit MM3M produces is waaay less than DS0731. Could it be a result of less hallucinations than DS0731? https://artificialanalysis.ai/evaluations/omniscience#aa-omn...

Maybe hallucination is good for prototyping and creative work, but maintaining and debugging code might be better done by a boring model?

notjes··on TIME Is Serving AI Bots a Different Website, with Ads Built In
I would also like to read the stripped down markdown copy and not the original. All the time.
notjes··on The Computer That Helped Win World War II
We have power centers around the globe. Power centers fill a certain void in societies, because nature hates the void. Power centers try grow by influencing, coercing, manipulating, buying, bribing other power centers. Again, a law of nature: entities try to expand. Some fail at it, some don't fail - at first. Just like all other entities in nature. The peasant in the street can profit from it or not. He can be killed by it or not.

Takeway: try to recognize a potentially not profitable grinding operation by power centers. Try not to become a bag hodler :) Ultimately humans can say NO, no matter the power of the manipulation and coercion by power centers.

notjes··on DeepSeek reasonix, DeepSeek native coding agent with high caching and low cost
Good thing DS just made their discount permanent. https://x.com/deepseek_ai/status/2057854261699195173
notjes··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
Soon, a dented toaster will be enough to run decent models.
notjes··on So where are all the AI apps?
All apps you are using are made with AI.
notjes··on Global warming has accelerated significantly
> Our data is "approximate"

> and there can be "no longer any doubt".

Who has written this?

notjes··on How I use Claude Code: Separation of planning and execution
Holy moly, I just applied the principles to DND campaign creation and I am in awe.
notjes··on How AI destroys institutions
"Civic institutions—the rule of law, universities, and a free press" All of those are rotten and corrupted to the core. But I don't think they will be destroyed by AI. People are voting with their feet.
notjes··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
To charge the average Tesla in 5 minutes you need about 1MW and cables as thick as a forearm.
notjes··on If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued
My experience is: If you are good at something, you will do it for ever. Be good - or get good - at things that you value.
notjes··on Exercise Paradox
So of those 2k calories the average human body needs to sustain itself, only a fraction of it, or none at all, is needed to perform many hours of physical labor. This means physical labor done by humans is cheap or free.
notjes··on D&D is Anti-Medieval
But societal, cultural and political concepts and traditions are technology too.
notjes··on We removed advertising cookies, here's what happened
Reading headlines like this my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
notjes··on How Lego builds a new Lego set
The article is fine, but the image implementation on this website did dampen the experience somewhat.
notjes··on Why are lithium prices collapsing?
Yes, resources are infinite. That is why the carrying capacity of the earth is also infinite. Because the ingenuity of humans is infinite.
notjes··on Paper Models of Vintage Computers
ok I am firing up the xerox machine damnit
notjes··on How many AMD RX 7900 XTX's are defective?
OT but got me thinking:

I member my old Voodoo graphics card had like 10 to 15 Watts. Then was surprised how much power the 6800Ultra consumed: whooping 70Watts. Those numbers are peanuts today. 350W for the AMD and 450W for the nVidia card.

AMD is predicting 0.7kW in 2025. I imagine in 2030 people will be having some some fancy CPU and RAM, but that GPU will be sitting on top of a 2kg block of copper to keep up with the heat generation. 1.2kW Cards here we go!

Next up: that power cable coming out of that wall is going straight into the GPU.

notjes··on Association between influenza vaccination and risk of stroke in Alberta, Canada
Funding: None.

Those are good people I guess.

notjes··on Why Men Are Hard to Help
Maybe all these programs to help students are just a cash grab and tackle pointless non issues.
notjes··on Forecasting of energy consumption by G20 countries
> Nuclear energy is one of the most dangerous forms of energy as one mistake in handling nuclear power can cause loss of many lives and damage for centuries

I consider Nuclear Energy an insurance policy for the local civilization. As long as a nation runs this things, the people running the gov can not totally detach from the populace and can not go totally insane.

Well, at least I thought so until Zelynsky was elected.

notjes··on Psychological Benefits of Believing in Conspiracy Theories
Conspiring, thinking and talking about conspiracies is normal human nature. Nothing to see here.
notjes··on How to Do a Handstand
ima try this! thanks
notjes··on What I learned during my three days offline
Being always connected to all people on the planet might not be healthy for all. No way!
notjes··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
Funny thing. For about 5 years now I manually adjust hue, saturation and other stuff to my liking for each product, because the colors felt bad very often. Now I am just waiting for an AI colorizer to watch "Schindlers List" how it was supposed to be.
