notsureaboutpg··on Launch YC: 3D Web; Training; Child privacy; Pregnancy; Life science; Desk rental
There are a lot of tools like this out there: SuccessFactors, Bridge, etc. And there's always room for more, imo.

What are you going to do differently? How are you going to gamify this in a way others don't?

I've worked in lots of places and interacted with many software portals that try to do this right. A lot of them falter by not keeping up with the actual current state of information within an organization (especially a rapidly growing one). Many of the courses end up outdated and they're really only useful for onboarding.

It's probably because of the time it takes and the friction needed to create a course or update a course. Because of that friction and because it's easier to just post to a Wiki / Slack channel / internal blog / etc. the small updates and changes, these courses sometimes languish.

Just questions that come to mind. And congrats on the launch. Wish the best for you!

notsureaboutpg··on Launch HN: InstaKin (YC S21) - Help immigrants to manage tasks in home countries
In South Asia, land is at a premium due to high population. You can buy basically any piece of land anywhere and its value rises a lot each year. My father-in-law owns swampland in South Asia which is still rising in value despite being a huge burden to actually develop.

In addition, property ownership is limited in a way it is not in the West (only citizens can own property, as an example, in India), so it's an advantage you want to retain as a migrant over non-natives.

notsureaboutpg··on Launch HN: Suplias (YC S21) – B2B inventory for mom and pop stores in Africa
How do you guarantee next day delivery? Do you currently limit merchants to being located in certain areas or how does that work behind the scenes? Even 2 day shipping is a complicated feat to achieve requiring lots of forecasting, data, and personnel.

It's a great idea, B2B connectors of businesses (esp. up-and-coming) to suppliers is a great space to be in.

I wonder if you would consider opening up your manufacturers / suppliers list to countries outside of Africa? Like Alibaba / Indiamart but for West Africa.

Good luck!

notsureaboutpg··on USA Today is getting a paywall. Who’s the audience for it?
I don't mind ads. I mind being tracked as I browse the web and this being called "advertising".

Static images as ads would work, wouldn't be blocked by ad blockers, and would be effective as ads.

notsureaboutpg··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
It's very clearly visible on the Wine wiki that people who have ever seen Microsoft Windows source code cannot contribute to Wine due to copyright restrictions:

https://wiki.winehq.org/Developer_FAQ#Who_can.27t_contribute...

I think OP has a point here, personally.

notsureaboutpg··on Two Portland delivery companies revolt against Amazon, shut down
Obviously it's a principled stance so you have to give up some convenience.

Every item on Amazon is available somewhere else. Every retail / online shopping experience can be contactless these days. You might have to wait 5 days instead of 2 for a package but that can be okay.

notsureaboutpg··on Two Portland delivery companies revolt against Amazon, shut down
There are lots of e-commerce sites though, and many of them are nicer to browse, nicer-looking, have more realistic reviews, etc. than Amazon.

Amazon absolutely competes on price. I've seen it myself. If Amazon sells something for a buck cheaper, lots and lots of people will go to Amazon for that something and maybe pick up something else from it's recommendation system they forgot they wanted, etc.

notsureaboutpg··on First Look: macOS Monterey Public Beta
Same. I'm kind of shocked how poor basic functionalities on MacBooks are. You need a third party app to tile your windows. If you run in "clamshell" mode, connected to a monitor with the lid down you need to do all sorts of hacks to make it work and it drains battery like crazy and the fan is always whirring. In Linux instead you write two config options in a file and it works like a charm.

MacBooks don't even work with multiple displays. Linux is the opposite. Works with all the displays you can connect.

My work makes us use MacBooks, otherwise I don't have much experience with them. Linux I've been running for 8 years now.

notsureaboutpg··on Global minimum corporate tax: 130 nations to support U.S. proposal
What corporation wants to do all the paperwork to spend all the money to establish all the shells to reside in a country where they technically legally owe the same tax but the government is just lax in collecting it?

The government can change its mind any time and start enforcing and you will owe tax and have no way out of it. Moving again won't erase history if they claim back taxes.

notsureaboutpg··on Duolingo S-1
There are lots of companies that sign with enterprises to provide a language learning perk to employees.

But you're right, I can't imagine them leveraging that to some kind of billion dollar valuation and success on the NYSE

notsureaboutpg··on GitHub Copilot
WSL was slower than dialup internet last I used it...
notsureaboutpg··on GitHub Copilot
I guess the difference is that you can put in a weekend of effort on an Arch Linux installation and get a machine tailored to your workflow, few bugs, fast boot times, easy to maintain for the future, etc.

But no matter how much work you put into your Windows install it will be just as slow/fast, uncustomizable, and unoptimizable as it was out of the box.

notsureaboutpg··on GitHub Copilot
Sounds like using CodePilot can introduct GPLd code into your project and make your project bound by GPL as a result...

0.1% is a lot when you use 100 suggestions a day.

notsureaboutpg··on GitHub Copilot
Telling the computer what you want IS programming...

When a new language / framework / library comes around, GitHub copilot won't have any suggestions for when you write in it.

notsureaboutpg··on Mexico's Supreme Court has decriminalised the private use of cannabis by adults
>Adults should be allowed to have any mind state they want, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

I mean, exactly the issue here is that if you allow all adults to take as much meth as they want, they will start hurting someone else indirectly.

notsureaboutpg··on SafeDollar ‘stablecoin’ drops to $0 following DeFi exploit on Polygon
I can't tell if this is a joke or not but the example of moving gold between non-friendly countries (do you mean smuggling?) is probably the least algorithmic thing out there... It's something where you absolutely will fail if you don't have tolerance for faults and flexibility to recover potential losses or change course while transacting...

The parent comment's real point was that the world isn't run algorithmically. An enterprise which tries to smuggle goods may not be able to reverse transactions if they transfer too much, but they should be able to react to an overcharge and shut down operations before they lose everything. Or they should be able to stop a shipment before it reaches the border. Or they should be able to change the rules of their trade if government rules change in between.

That's the kind of stuff smart contracts tend to ignore or forget about. They have little flexibility in them in a world that's constantly in flux.

notsureaboutpg··on The Dev Behind One of the Best SNES Emulators Has Died
I thought it's one dev who died? Is the whole team gone as well?
notsureaboutpg··on The economics of dollar stores
Well, you can only have that experience because someone else is having an unfair, exploitative experience at the same store...
notsureaboutpg··on The blackout Palestinians are facing on social media
Idk this doesn't sound true about any of the Bengalis I have met. They all seem to care a lot about Rohingya (since it is especially close to them and they see the suffering), the Uighurs, Yemen, etc.

Israel's oppression of the Palestinians is decades older than all the conflicts you mention, which is why they probably don't get as much airtime comparatively.

notsureaboutpg··on The blackout Palestinians are facing on social media
I don't agree at all, and I don't think others agree either. Hamas is the government of the area in question. Why are they not allowed to fire into Israel but Israel is allowed to do all manner of crimes in Hamas' territory?

Shooting innocents, storming innocent gatherings, espionage, wounding and killing innocent people is always done by Israel especially in land it internationally has no right to (think East Jerusalem).

No government in the world would allow such unchecked aggression and militarism within their borders. Hamas does not allow it either.

notsureaboutpg··on YouTube takes down Xinjiang videos, forcing rights group to seek alternative
YouTube cares about human rights because they'll deny genocide but at least for pride week they animated a gay pride parade on the YouTube logo in the app. Isn't that true human rights work after all?
notsureaboutpg··on Reviews of Android TV launcher after Google added ads to the homescreen
I think he means he can access US Netflix in hotels because I had a similar experience somewhere.

You can get pluggable Android TV which plug into HDMI ports in Hotel TVs and things like this.

Last few times I brought my laptop and HDMI cable to a hotel and it was nice. We usually go to places for outdoorsy things and in the night there's not much to do

notsureaboutpg··on Reviews of Android TV launcher after Google added ads to the homescreen
Most tvs have multiple HDMI inputs, why not have your Windows PC for gaming and a Linux PC with Kodi or whatever you like.

I personally just run mpv on my Linux box plugged into my TV and connected to a DLNA media server in my home and use my Android phone as a remote with KDEConnect, I'm not a big app person. I mostly watch YouTube videos my media server auto downloads when they are available from creators I like. For my family I have Netflix.

You're right it's not as nice as using a TV remote though! I bet Kodi or Plex, etc. would be more navigable with a remote. I wonder if you can get a Bluetooth remote that connects to a PC...

notsureaboutpg··on Panasonic sells its $3.6B Tesla stake
It just isn't true that other brands are lagging way behind Tesla in tech / infra / market share for electric vehicles.

The difference in the past 3-4 years has been huge and traditional car companies have really closed the gap. We're no longer in the days of only the Leaf and the Bolt being electric cars with reasonable range.

Most electric cars these days have enough range to be a daily driver. Most cars these days have driver assist and rear cameras, etc. Tesla's "fully autonomous" car is not here (despite being "2 years away" 6 years ago). Teslas have shockingly lower reliability than people expected when they first started being sold, and traditional cars have a leg up on them in this regard.

I'm not a Tesla downer, honestly I think they've done so much good for the world and the risks taken to make that company a success has accelerated progress in so many ways. All of that can be true, and it can also be true that other brands are catching up and already have attractive alternatives to Teslas out in the market now.

notsureaboutpg··on As the Pandemic Recedes, Millions of Workers Are Saying 'I Quit'
It's really hard to outsource middle management and executive roles, which are the next step for most dev roles. So the outsourcing effect has lots of limitations.

I welcome outsourcing though. I do quality work and know what it's worth and can advocate for myself. Any foreign worker who can do the same is welcome.

notsureaboutpg··on As the Pandemic Recedes, Millions of Workers Are Saying 'I Quit'
First part wrong. Doesn't make any sense to try to improve an office to attract devs when so many devs are leaving the office. Office space improvements would be expensive right now due to various factors: labor shortage, materials inflation, etc. Plus the cheaper move is to snap up fancier existing office spaces since offices are in lower demand now, thus the price of existing ones will have decreased.

Second part you have a point. This is the best time to move to the US on an H1B. If you're an int'l student, this is the time to look for that office job that will hold you till a green card.

notsureaboutpg··on Ask HN: 90s programmers, what did you expect the future of tech to look like?
I mean, no amount of reading science journals convinced us to leave Iraq and Afghanistan until after we sunk multiple trillions of dollars into it and all we got out was an anti-American, pro-Iranian government in Iraq and the Taliban de facto ruling Afghanistan...
notsureaboutpg··on Ask HN: 90s programmers, what did you expect the future of tech to look like?
Somewhat related, I thought the progress of technology would be matched by a moral progress of society. People would become more tolerant. Aided by advanced technology, we would break down the barriers between us and see the similarities between all human beings. Instead we are seeing the rise of populism across the globe. Darfur wasn't the last genocide, we recently had the Rohingya and the Uighur ethnic cleansings... Technology didn't help us see other people like we see ourselves, it helped us distance ourselves further from other people instead.

It was naive to think that just because technology progresses, society progresses too. The 20+ year Iraq and Afghanistan wars really made me realize that advanced technology meant nothing if we were going to regress morally.

notsureaboutpg··on Hasura GraphQL Engine and SQL Server
I built an Expo app on top of Hasura and rolled my own passwordless authentication mechanism and it was far far easier than using Auth0, imo. Auth was done using serverless functions to send emails with one-time-use tokens, to match the received one-time-use tokens with those generated in the database, and to return JWTs which the clients can use to auth later on and which grant access to different roles (it was an app with roles for managers, employees, etc.)

You can even implement refresh token / auth token with rotation relatively simply. I felt Auth0 makes these things complicated to implement, whereas implementing them took only a few days and the docs / help online on how to do so are very good these days.

notsureaboutpg··on Six charged in Silicon Valley insider trading ring
Whatever it's called doesn't matter. There's not a viable alternative. If you don't prosecute charges with substantial evidence, the risk of loss increases and eventually the department bleeds money at too large a degree and gets shut down causing no enforcement
