noxin··on Every time we lift a pallet from the shipping room, the server times out (2006)
Unfortunately I can't seem to find it anymore.

It was in a military facility in the seventies, and always when the general visited the computers crashed. This happened too often to be a demonstration effect, it turned out to be the metal in the generals shoes interfering with the electronics.

noxin··on Every time we lift a pallet from the shipping room, the server times out (2006)
Just the kind of bug which seems ridiculous as a bug report, but turns out to be true.

Like the "OpenOffice.org won’t print on Tuesdays" bug, or the bug which crashed the computer when the general visited. Or the one when the server went down whenever a certain guy had a support ticket.

Stories like this always remind me of the car allergic to vanilla ice cream.

noxin··on PostgreSQL 9.6 Released
They likely benchmarked it on a 32 core system. Like a dual Opteron board. If the task was single-threaded before a 32-fold improvement is reasonable.
noxin··on Swiss endorse new surveillance powers
It also allows scanning all the border-crossing internet traffic. Which is an NSA-style dragnet since there is mostly international traffic in a small country.

noxin··on The Pentagon’s procurement system is so broken they are calling on Watson
Looks like the saying that nobody gets fired for buying IBM is still valid.
noxin··on Skype alternatives for Linux?
I'm currently trying out Jitsi and XMPP. It seems to work well on new clients, on some older systems there are crashes when they go to sleep, which I couldn't fix yet.
noxin··on Bill Gates Says Apple Should Unlock the iPhone
> I see all of this more a question of "can Americans actually have anything remain private on a commercial device?".

It's Americans now, but if Apple gives in, investigators from other big markets might pressure Apple to do the same for them. I think that's what's meant with cutting the ribbon many times.

noxin··on Laptop fixed
Transfering the data or even the whole harddisk is possible. However if the scool has registered the serial numbers of the laptops, for example for warranty tracking, you're out of luck.

noxin··on U.S. fourth-quarter GDP cut to 2.4% from 3.2%
It's not the GDP which was cut down but the estimate of the GDP growth.
noxin··on [dead]
I always liked the jargon file, but it's getting outdated. There were no updates in the last 10 years.
noxin··on Ask HN: Which setup would be better(custom PC/MBA)?
If you don't plan on carrying it around, I'd recommend a custom PC. It has the advantage that if you rum short on disk space, RAM, GPU power or anything else you can easily upgrade it. Since heat production is an issue, invest in an efficient power supply (80! gold/platinum) and enable power saving options in BIOS.
