noxryan··on Why Is There a Bucatini Shortage in America?
I found the premise of this odd. I also live in Brooklyn and have had no issues finding bucatini this year. It's consistently in stock at my nearby whole foods.
noxryan··on Boeing 737 MAX crash and the rejection of ridiculous data
I agree that we frequently see this on HN in regards to aviation. However, I don;t think it applies to Greenspun. He's a knowledgeable and active pilot himself.
noxryan··on The Longest Continuous Flight in History – 64 Days in a Tiny Biplane
AOPA has a much better article about this flight: https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2008/march/01/e...

They also know better than to call it a biplane ha

noxryan··on Tesla Model 3 is equipped with a driver-facing camera
Do you have a source for this? My understanding is the Mercedes "Attention Assist" is based off driving behavior and not a camera pointed at the driver.
noxryan··on Launch HN: Feather (YC S17), painless furniture rental for people who move a lot
What about this bed in Queen Size? (First piece I priced out)

Feather 3 month rental price: $207

Wayfair purchase price (including shipping): $201

noxryan··on Launch HN: Feather (YC S17), painless furniture rental for people who move a lot
I was just about to comment exactly this. I immediately recognized several items from Overstock, Wayfair, etc.

The price of several of the items on Feather is close or sometimes more then the retail price from Overstock/Wayfair and delivery is not included. What am I missing here and what value do they provide?

Feather might as well just drop ship the furniture to your door and send somebody to assemble it.

Edit: Looks like Wayfair even offers 2 day shipping on some items and usually provides an exact delivery day: https://www.wayfair.com/Zipcode%E2%84%A2-Design-Colby-Uphols...

This is anecdotal but a lot of my Furniture is from Overstock/Wayfair and arrives within a week living in a city. Ikea also delivers for a flat fee within a day or two.

noxryan··on A330 flight control laws saved Voyager, inquiry finds
358KIAS is in fact (or is close) to the Vne (never exceed) speed of an A330. This is an indicated airspeed limit while mach numbers are based off TAS (True Airspeed).

Here's a link to help explain the differences between IAS/CAS and TAS: https://www.decodedscience.org/airspeed-of-an-aircraft-indic...

noxryan··on The $50,000 San Francisco Home
Wooden multi-story building are standard in the US, at least in the midwest. Many new apartment buildings less than 7 stories are constructed with wood. I actually live in a 6 story wooden building with about 300 housing units.

Also, stepping back higher stories is commonly done to help deal with shadows.

noxryan··on The Invisible American
It sounds like this is geared toward "high growth" startups.

"With Stripe Atlas, you can establish a C-Corporation for your business in Delaware."

Probably not ideal for a typical small business.

noxryan··on iPhone 7
I agree, I remember it being very poor compared to my Bose aviation headset. Still was a cool proof of concept. I imagine with the right software/hardware it could work just as well as external ANR
noxryan··on iPhone 7
There are also ways to do Active Noise Cancelling without an external battery and without a new cable. I had an old Sony laptop that did ANR with software on the laptop and mics on the earpieces wired back into the laptop. Also the connector was backward compatible with a standard 3.5mm. They just used a 3.5mm connector with extra conductors on it like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Connectronics-TRRS-Conductor-Metal-Au...

I've never heard of any restrictions suing a company in small claims. It looks like it does happen from time to time:

noxryan··on Uber-Style Flight-Sharing Service Shot Down by U.S. Court
It sounds like they we're trying to use exception (c) of FAR 61.113[1]

"A private pilot may not pay less than the pro rata share of the operating expenses of a flight with passengers, provided the expenses involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees."

But anyway, I completely agree with you, any private pilot who took part in this service is asking for their certificate to be suspended. This is definitely outside the scope of that exception and is asking for problems by allowing private pilots to take part.

Edit: Just noticed that their FAQ still claim that this is completely okay for a private pilot to use [2]. This should be removed.

noxryan··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Features
Mercedes has had this for at least a couple years:

noxryan··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Features
Modern aircraft have excellent redundancy. Commercial aircraft already typically have 3 Pitot* tubes and 3 static ports. They need unobstructed airflow and are placed accordingly. In this kind of aircraft they do cross-verify each other as well, but if they all are reading different values, there's not much to be done. Conditions were such on AF447 that they all experienced some amount of icing until the aircraft descended enough. I don't see how having one more pitot tube is the proper response.
noxryan··on How MacArthur Geniuses Handle Their Windfalls
What you're describing is tax-withholding. In this situation you would receive the extra tax withheld when you file your tax return, so you're not really having extra tax taken from you. You could also always claim more allowances on your W-4.
noxryan··on Show HN: Density – Anonymous People Counter and API
I was also wondering about its ability to determine the direction of traffic. If it relies on a location having a separate entrance and exit, that's a pretty big negative. I'm also wondering how it handles large groups. Does anyone have any idea how the hardware works?

noxryan··on Our No Asshole Rule
This is what they claim:

"There are two almost sure-fire ways to understand someone’s perspective. The first is to eat with them. How do they treat the wait staff? Are they demanding, or easily agitated? What happens when things aren’t perfect? The other test is to meet their significant other. What qualities did they choose in the person with whom has the most influence over them? We call these the asshole acid test."

noxryan··on Only 30% of Americans Out of Comcast Reach After Deal
Not that it adds much, but the maps must not take into account Comcast's other holdings. The Upper Midwest is missing from that map which includes Midcontinent Communications which is a jointly owned by Comcast.

noxryan··on How scammers drained $1,700 from a bank account using Starbucks cards
My understanding is that one way to reduce the impact of card skimming would be to use a credit card for general purchases rather than a debit card. I would especially avoid pin-based transactions whenever possible.
noxryan··on Wire Transfers Now Supported
"Dwolla now supports wire transfers for deposits."

It looks like wire transfer is only supported for depositing money into Dwolla.

noxryan··on Wire Transfers Now Supported
That is considered an ACH transfer, which is the same way that you normally fund your Dwolla account. A wire transfer allows larger amounts and is much quicker but usually has significant fees attached to it. ( As well as some other differences)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_Clearing_House http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_transfer

noxryan··on Wire Transfers Now Supported
I believe the initialing bank will still hit the account holder with a fee to wire transfer to Dwolla.
noxryan··on Black Start
This reminds me of how turbine aircraft usually start their engines. The battery on these aircraft are used to start the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) which then starts the main engines. The APU is basically a generator, often in the tail of the aircraft.

noxryan··on Poll: If you're in the US, What State Do You Live In?
Interesting, me and another programmer I work with just voted for North Dakota, yet it was only raised to 1 point.

I wonder if HN limits votes by IP Address.

noxryan··on Changing times for web developers
Have you tried using the Dojo/Dijit Framework at all? I have been using it for medium to large sized web applications recently. I break pages and components into dijit widgets and everything becomes separated very nicely. It has a similar declarative markup to the link you posted.
