Thing is, the meal deals are _everywhere_ in the UK. There is no "high cost of living" priced Tesco. Or Sainsbury's. Or 5 other supermarkets.

Huh? LI is standard on like every internet router there is.
nrki··on Uncloud - Tool for deploying containerised apps across servers without k8s
Very neat tool. Thank you for your efforts!

I am wondering how state replication works on the backend. The design mentions using crdt and a gossip proto, but I'm not sure what is actually implemented as it is a tad vague. I haven't dug into the code so forgive me if it is obvious or explained elsewhere.

Love the part about the CEO being a Musk sycophant. Right down to the similar language in tweets: "Some of SF got poor sleep. We must fix this."
nrki··on California's future depends on how leaders rebuild after the Los Angeles fires
Most rural houses in Australia are built this way. They still burn down.

I don't think anyone really understands how intense wildfires can get when fanned by wind. It will destroy almost anything.

See: Black Saturday bushfires, Australia.

> "it really made no difference whether the houses were brick or timber. In fact, with the speed of the fire front some timber houses fared better than brick as it moved too fast for the houses to catch, but the bricks exploded from the sudden change in temperature."

> "When you have a fire front coming through at 800C it'll melt your window seals and aluminum window frames. The glass will fall out then everything is on fire.

nrki··on Removing half a ton of HEU from Kazakhstan (2014)
Not really, Uranium itself isn't dangerous or even that scarce.

Super-enriched Uranium, however _is_ super rare, expensive and desirable.

> Oppie, a scientist at the peak of his field, willingly handed over the most powerful weapon known to humanity to... a person with a less-than-stellar moral code: President Truman

As opposed to ...

- not handing it over? Prison, then they figure it out anyway.

- handing it to someone else during wartime? Prison or a firing squad, then they figure it out anyway.

nrki··on Interviewing the Interviewer: Questions to Uncover a Company's True Culture
Well, this thread was about setting a boundary of 9-5...would people go to a startup expecting that?

So...definitely for larger orgs, where "emergency availability" would be a big red flag, unless one explicitly opted into a (compensated) on call rota.

I guess one can make an exception for very early career, but again this was about setting a 9-5 boundary

nrki··on Interviewing the Interviewer: Questions to Uncover a Company's True Culture
Symptom of an organization that doesn't plan and instead of budgeting for 1.3x employees for outside hours support, budgets for ~0.9x and extracts the rest with "expectation".

nrki··on Cruise slashes 24% of self-driving car workforce in sweeping layoffs

nrki··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2023)
It's £5.99 or £0.01 if you buy two
nrki··on Ask HN: (How much) do you get paid for being on call?
Our team, led by me and some others, negotiated hard when asked to go on call, that being a material change to our employment contracts at the time.

We ended up with a generous $ stipend per on-call shift, as a % of salary, as well as time off in lieu.

As generous as it sounds, it was an equitable solution in the end, given that we were supporting a multi-million dollar platform that was not fully stable at the time.

A lot has been said by other companies like "your salary should cover that", but I say nuts to that. On-call should be something people actively want to go on. It should be equitable, not forced.

nrki··on Jamie Dimon warns panic will overtake markets as U.S. approaches debt default
The US is one of very few (<2, inclusive) countries that has this "debt ceiling" malarkey. It's a political tool in the US, that's ita only purpose.

nrki··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
> Technically it is replaceable

It's not user-replaceable. It would not be _that_ difficult for Apple to keep a SODIMM slot free, or even come up with a new standard - as they are wont to do.

Apple sacrificed upgradability in the name of making more money - it's as simple as that.

nrki··on Amazon set to begin new round of layoffs affecting over 18,000 people
Thanks for the links, but I have problems with that visualcapitalist graphic:

- carzoo, walmart, getir, carvana, doordash, hellofresh, tesla, rivian, peloton: not really tech companies. Mostly teched-up logistics companies.

- the twitter layoffs aren't (only) due to "the market", they're due to the unpredictability of its owner.

The source for the data is https://www.trueup.io/layoffs, which is better and also has a source for the black bars in visualcapitalists' graphic.

nrki··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
The Twitter Files are much less earth-shattering than what Elon implied with the response we are talking about. That is, the planned, deliberate muzzling of political figures _for their political views_, ordered by other political figures or in-power government figures.

I have no doubt Part 3 will be forthcoming, and if it unequivocally points to that, I will sit up and take note.

That said, all of this drama is for something that is now dead. That is, Twitter is dead as a platform for political discourse. Even given the previous Twitter administration's apparent overmoderation of rightwing voices, it was still the loudhailer for what was almost an overthrow of the US government. For better or for worse, those shackles have been removed. November 2023 and on may see a replay, and the loudhailer has no filter anymore.

nrki··on The Twitter Files Part 2: Twitter's Secret Blacklists
I think others have already replied with basically what I would have replied with, but to be clear: I was not talking about "Twitter Files Part 2", I was talking about the comment thread you posted.

My hyperbole was not necessary, you're right, but one can't say EM doesn't have disdain for MSM - he says it almost every day.
