nsl73··on In a warming world, New England’s trees are storing more carbon
> It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage.

- Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Vegetarian Diets

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the largest group of professional nutritionist in the world. People putting doubt that plant-only diets can be healthy are showing the same level of anti-science that climate change deniers are.

The paper goes on to say that having a plant based diet reduces risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. A vegan diet is one of the most healthy diets an individual can choose when measured by the health outcomes of people that choose the diet.

nsl73··on In a warming world, New England’s trees are storing more carbon
> we're going to need every calorie we can get hold of to prevent mass starvation

Then we should begin transferring animal agricultural lands to plant agricultural lands because plant agriculture produces more calories per acreage.

Kansas is perfect for growing many legumes, grains, and vegetables. Instead it is largely used to grow beef and dairy.

nsl73··on Planning for My Kidnapping
> In the past 10 years, I'm sure there have been multiple times when I've gone more than 30 hours with cellular service or WiFi.

In the last 10 years the longest I went without Internet was during trans pacific flights, so never longer than 15 hours. I think this level of connection —- basically intermittent connection during the entire waking hours —- is super common in today’s society.

If I was disconnected for longer than 30 hours w/o prior knowledge of being disconnected it would mean something seriously bad has happened to me, and it would be nice if my next of kin had access to all the documents they would need to settle my affairs.

nsl73··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
> An album is a collection of single songs.

Releasing songs individually is a serial process. Releasing an album puts all of the songs published into the same context, and everyone’s first experience of all songs occur at the same time.

A band that makes a successful album produces something greater than the sum of the individual songs inside the album

nsl73··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
> It would help address the spyware concern by moving it to a US company

Does anyone else remember when housing data in US severs was considered less private than alternatives? It’s incredible that Azure, and the rest of the us based cloud providers, have been able to rebrand American severs as the cloud so successfully that they are well known for being secure and safe.

nsl73··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
Over 80% of my music listening is full albums, even though I haven’t played a record or CD since 2015.

I really hope the medium of the album survives, because I much prefer listening to a coherent and deliberate group of songs than any other method.

nsl73··on Nuclear Fusion Project, Iter begins assembly
Please, don’t act like nuclear fusion is a simple iteration of nuclear fission. It’s a fundamentally different process.

Fusion would provide (much) more energy, use (much) less radioactive inputs, and produce (much) less radioactive outputs. Fusion is significantly safer. In a failure mode the fusion reaction will lose containment and die out like a fire without oxygen. Fission rods will continue to produce heat & radiation in a failure mode, and all failure modes of a fission power plant need to account for this.

I’m actually pro fission, because the risks of fission are lower than the risks of coal, oil, and natural gas. Yes, the article was hyperbolic. However, you’re under-hyping the advancement of fusion. When fusion comes it will be politically palpable globally, cleaner than fission, and it will reduce the cost of energy significantly.

nsl73··on All-you-can-eat study shows body copes well with one-off calorie indulgence
Yes the answer is more than 1, but because the mechanism of action is so well understood and the temporal association so strong the answer is less than 10.
nsl73··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
I would look at finance companies and banks directly.
nsl73··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
Yeah. My point was my parent comment said that a large home was needed, but actually an average sized home will do.

I’ve worked out of a 880sqft city apartment pre-covid, and it wasn’t fun w/o children. With children would be hard.

nsl73··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
> Americans will get priced out of the market and they should be concerned about that.

It’s just good planning to have multiple potential forms of income. Programming might be the thing I do that can pay the highest, but I have plan B, plan C, and plan D ready to be put into action if I suddenly don’t have a career in software engineering, or I don’t want a career in software engineering.

Interestingly enough, having options also puts you in a stronger position when discussing salaries and benefits with your employer or perspective employer.

nsl73··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
The average home size in the US is just over 2300sqft. That is plenty of room for two video conferencing adults separated, one nanny and 1-3 children.
nsl73··on Grit Has a Negligible Effect on Success Compared to Intelligence
Right. The parent comment I was replaying to stated “if intelligence is fixed” and I was attempting to cast doubt on the clause. I wouldn’t want to take position that intelligence is fixed in an argument.
nsl73··on Grit Has a Negligible Effect on Success Compared to Intelligence
There’s inclusive evidence that intelligence is fixed, and there’s evidence that people that believe intelligence is fixed have worse outcomes.

I think it’s very likely environmental factors and personal mindset have considerable impacts both positive and negative on intelligence. I also suspect in the next decade or two research will come out on pharmaceuticals that show improved mental performance. There’s already the beginnings of this.

nsl73··on How and why I attempt to use Links as main browser
> A cache from heaven that remembers everywhere I've been and never reloads unless I tell it. I can fly around history like you've never seen.

This would be a killer feature for me, especially if the cache was fully searchable.

They bought Nokia, and had a presence in every Att/Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile store.

Microsoft tried hard, and kept trying long after it was clear to most of the market that they didn’t have traction. The owners of Windows phones were some of the most vocal champions at the time too. They legitimately made good but unpopular products at the time.

nsl73··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
Confirming your interpretation of my original comment.
nsl73··on Let’s avoid talk of ‘chemical imbalance’: it’s people in distress
My communications should have made that more clear. It’s probably a common and dangerous interpretation.
nsl73··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
Is this propaganda to help relax the home owning population?

If the jobless rate and GDP continue to suffer I can’t see this being anything but bad for rural and suburban real estate.

nsl73··on The end of the Arab world’s oil age is nigh
There is a push to move away from disposable plastic. Why else were paper straws such a big deal?
nsl73··on The end of the Arab world’s oil age is nigh
The developing world, a group very cost sensitive and unlikely to switch for environmental reasons, is putting gasoline vehicles on the road much faster than the developed road is taking them off.

For electric vehicles to eat the world they have to be cheaper than gasoline counterparts. Not only for luxury electric vehicles to be cheaper than luxury gasoline vehicles, but for the cheapest gasoline motorcycle/scooter/car to be more expensive than the cheapest electric motorcycle/scooter/car. Given the current cost materials inside a battery/electric engine compared to the current cost of materials inside a combustion engine it’s unlikely to happen with our current approach.

nsl73··on Let’s avoid talk of ‘chemical imbalance’: it’s people in distress
Please don’t consider my initial statement questioning a metaphor to mean that people that have suffered a psychotic episode or are likely to suffer a psychotic episode in the near future should avoid medication. The threshold for considering medication should be lower than a psychotic episode.

My concern is the metaphor in which many people are viewing mental health, not in the treatments themselves.

nsl73··on Let’s avoid talk of ‘chemical imbalance’: it’s people in distress
I find the chemical imbalance metaphor for mental illness the opposite of empowering and an easy well to sell pharmaceuticals.

There is some truth to the metaphor, but I wonder if it’s doing more harm than good.

Wow! When did they start doing this? I’m glad they stopped!

I’m really grateful to Ubuntu for helping me get deeper into Linux in 2007, but I would never recommend them to anyone today.

nsl73··on Can an extreme low carb diet be used as medicine?
It’s a really extreme diet. I would be concerned with the fat intake, the cholesterol intake, and limits on certain fruits and vegetables.
nsl73··on Can an extreme low carb diet be used as medicine?
> They are also for 7-8 bite sized 250 calorie meals every other waking hour.

No, I wouldn’t say this is modern consistent dietary advice. So many people that make it there business to talk about diet are hyping intermittent fasting now.
