null0pointer··on PeerTube: Free software to take back control of your videos
With the exception of illegal content this is how it should be. “I don’t like this so I’m going to block it so I don’t have to look at it again” rather than “I don’t like this so nobody should be allowed to look at it”.
null0pointer··on Attacking an Ethereum L2 with Unbridled Optimism
Good question, I don't have an answer for you unfortunately. I have seen people talk about this in the Monero community though so at least they're aware of the issue.
null0pointer··on Attacking an Ethereum L2 with Unbridled Optimism
As I said, that's just my opinion really. But Monero uses a dynamic block size. The hardware requirements will increase of course. But hardware becomes cheaper over time so the monetary cost of participation does not increase as quickly as LN where the cost of participation is capital directly.
null0pointer··on Attacking an Ethereum L2 with Unbridled Optimism
The main issue with LN is even more fundamental than that. Their argument against other scaling solutions was basically "if we scale on chain the hardware requirements will be hard for regular people to keep up and decentralization will suffer". So instead they went about and created a system where only the wealthy have the capital to commit to open enough channels and route payments. LN is almost totally antithetical to crypto in that it enables the creation of the very thing crypto sought to destroy; gatekeeping payment processors. Bitcoin was co-opted by Blockstream and co. who wanted to become Visa/Mastercard-like rent seeking middlemen.

Opinion part: Monero is technically superior to Bitcoin in basically every way.

Once again we have someone here conflating the first amendement with free speech. Free speech is a principle, the first amendment works in service of it.

null0pointer··on Is compensation stagnation to blame for the great resignation?
You are correct, of course, that vaccination should be completely apolitical. However you can’t deny that covid vaccines have become the favored political bludgeon in the last couple of years.
null0pointer··on Dark Web – Justice League
Is this anarchism? That being naturally emergent formal processes for things which would normally be handled by the government/legal system.
null0pointer··on The Tipping Point: The Economics of Taxi Fares
Why is tipping even calculated as a percentage? It's not like the work done by the waiter is suddenly 10x harder or more deserving of reward when they're bringing a plate with a $100 dish rather than a $10 dish.
null0pointer··on New Year, New CEO
I'm a big fan of Moxie. Thanks for all the work you've done to give people a free and secure way of communicating. A truly important cause.

Ultra-cynical take: I wonder if there's an element of avoiding conflict-of-interest accusations regarding Mobilecoin.

The way I view it is that the unsafe keyword acts as a flag for auditors that they would need to thoroughly check the following block for memory errors.

null0pointer··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
I wish there was some kind of soaking in period with laws like this (maybe even all laws). Something like

“Those who implement new laws are first themselves subject to them for one year before being rolled out to the general public.”

Perhaps it might slow the descent into an insane techno-dystopia.

Of course that would never happen though.

null0pointer··on Why Monero
To expand on this a little bit, non-default privacy means that use of privacy features becomes de facto suspicious activity, thus rendering them useless.

Another issue with Zcash is that it had a trusted setup, which is not an issue Monero has.

null0pointer··on Lemmy – A link aggregator for the fediverse
My understanding of how federated social networks work is that a server operator can firstly moderate the content on their own server as they see fit, and secondly blacklist other servers from syncing data with their own if they don’t approve of the content it hosts.

null0pointer··on New Anti Anti-Money Laundering Services for Crooks
This isn’t an anti anti-money laundering. It’s providing the same information as an anti-money laundering service, the only difference is that its access isn’t limited to large exchanges and banks. I, for one, am happy to see this kind of technology available for the masses. If I were legally accepting bitcoin as payment for my small business or whatever I’d like to be able to check that the bitcoins weren’t involved in criminal activity before accepting them rather than dealing with trouble when trying to deposit them to an exchange.
null0pointer··on Apple's child protection features spark concern within its own ranks: sources
Whenever someone makes a "think of the children" argument it has absolutely nothing to do with whether they actually care about children. They just want to make it extremely difficult to counter-argue without being labelled as pedophile adjacent. It is a completely disingenuous argument 99% of the time it is used.
null0pointer··on Apple’s Mistake
As a long time iPhone/Mac user, this change has me seriously looking at Android and Linux for my next devices. Only a couple of months ago I was wondering whether I was too invested in Apple's ecosystem, and what it would take to push me to a competitor. Got my answer surprisingly quickly.
null0pointer··on Ethereum just activated its ‘London’ hard fork
If amount staked has no influence on inclusion or vote weight then what’s to stop a large ETH holder from splitting their wallet into several smaller wallets with the minimum staking balance and just gaining vote weight that way?
null0pointer··on Infrastructure bill cryptocurrency surveillance provision is a privacy disaster
This particular instance is a disaster, no doubt, but the real issue is the bundling of completely unrelated provisions into single bills. It's absurd.

null0pointer··on Grey Watch Dealer Vanished with Millions of Dollars in Inventory and Funding
I'd recently started watching their youtube videos. I found it very interesting to take a peek inside the world of watch dealing.

On one side their business practices were absolutely shambolic. In one of their recent videos they talked about how they're managing their inventory (100's of watches) with a single shared excel spreadsheet and how they have mismatches between the spreadsheet and their actual inventory all the time. A death sentence for any business.

Then on the other side they were in talks about opening up a store and expanding very rapidly. Their plans for the store were extremely ambitious. Huge floorplan, floor to ceiling fishtanks, watch history museum. My gut was telling me that they were growing too fast and that this plan was not feasible. Then at the eleventh hour of negotiations for the lease they pulled out because the landlord was "taking too long" to finalize the paperwork! Huge red flag.

Hope the investors get their money back. They will have to show up eventually. With how high profile they were there's no way they can hide forever if they have run off with the inventory.

null0pointer··on Binance banned from doing business in UK
I don't really think you can claim that the intent of Bitcoins design is to facilitate crime and scams.
null0pointer··on Instructions show how cops use GrayKey to brute force iPhones
On iPhone at least when you restart the phone it forces you to use the passcode to unlock the first time. I believe in the US passcodes are protected by the 5th amendment whereas face id or fingerprints are not. So while you can be compelled to unlock your phone with biometrics, you cannot be compelled with the passcode. Your milage may vary in other jurisdictions.
