nullserver··on What defines a great company culture?
Daughters with puppy dog eyes are bad for the budget.

It was neat when I overheard the oldest coaching her sisters on how to plead in a cute tone.

I’m going to burn hard for this.

California has been one party rule the last few years.

This.

On a different language, but same mindset.

System is many years outdated and no one understands it.

Get a ticket. “Fix all the problems”

Me “Umm okay. Hire 20 people and give us 3 years.”

Them: you have a week by yourself.

14 months later their standpoint is it’s always one more week left.

I can’t tell if they even see the absurdity anymore.

CS College degrees in dot com era were hit and miss. Also often had a weird mix of electrical engineering courses thrown in.

Was quite common to do 2-3 years then drop out and start a job. So much so that people with degrees were often looked down on. Exceptions for things like MIT.

After year 3, there was nothing left for me to take. So I took a job.

I would like to have a degree, but it was the right call at the time.

Few years ago I went back and started an Art degree. Was a blast.

nullserver··on FDA approves new ADHD drug for children
Growing up my mom was often impossible to understand. She would change topics 3 times in a single sentence.

Basically every child and grandchild has been diagnosed with ADHD, or really needs to get tested.

Neurologist was the one me try adderall. I have autoimmune disorder Sjogrens, but didn’t know it at the time. At time it felt like he was trying random things to see what helped.

It was amazing for focus and energy. Enough that I could work for a time.

Course it left me in horrific agony most of the time.

It’s a nightmare when dealing with doctors.

Another example, Benadryl makes me insanely hyper. One of my kids is same way.

Telling a doctor results in being labeled a liar.

At least a dozen medications that I respond in weird ways to.

A 4 hour adderall (20mg), lasts me about 30 hours.

Sometimes makes it a lot better, sometimes worse.

Worked better when younger. Now it’s role as a vascular-constrictor is dangerous for me.

nullserver··on Where have all the kindergartners gone?
Common tactic is to teach at the level of what the school wants kids to be at. No matter how many or if any kids are at that level.

I take those pills for an autoimmune disease. Not much fun.

Mosquito angle isn’t one I’ve heard before.

nullserver··on Rapid global heating is hurting farm productivity, study finds
An Old joke.

US scientists were explaining global warming to Russians in Siberia.

The Russians became very excited and asked what they could do to help speed up global warming.

Yea, lots of different kinds of magnesium and brands are very annoying.

Stuff is amazing dramatically reduced headaches and muscle aches. Magnesium citrate.

I generally stick to the most expensive ones.

Other variations have not helped, I felt weird on them.

Problem is the same (though to a much lessor degree) for prescriptions.

Plaqunial name brand is drastically more impactful then it’s genetics. So much so, that I have to cut dosage 1/2 to 1/4.

nullserver··on Penny Stocks Are Booming, Which Is Good News for Swindlers
Vitamins and supplements are part of what happens when doctors don’t listen.

Was getting up 10 times a night. Life was a living hell. Doctors were useless.

So I tried a recommended one. (Aloe Vera pills)

I sleep through the night now.

Now I also have had bad experiences. Elderberry was not fun.

Sounds like the fair tax by Neil Bortz.

High sales tax on all “new” products. None on used. A check to everyone each month so that poor don’t suffer from it.

Basically eliminates the IRS, and much of the Tax compliance / avoidance industry. Stops a lot of the tax nonsense that corporations and congress loves.

nullserver··on HPy: A better C API for Python?
Had to help out with some python the other day. About 15 years since I used python. A couple of hours to figure out how to get it running locally. Then I fixed the various issues. Mostly horrible performance problems.

All told half a day of effort.

Felt amazing being able to be productive so quickly on ancient abandoned code. The badly written algorithm was just obvious in its wrongness.

One viewpoint I like.

Extroverts gain energy from social interactions. Introverts lose energy. The inverse for time alone.

I’m introverted.

But can be quite social, and even enjoy it. However I absolutely have to have down time after to recharge from it.

nullserver··on As Bad Information Spreads, Florida Schools Seek to Teach 'Digital Literacy'
Was in a senior in high school French. Teacher was explaining how to translate present participle. Complete blank stares. Only thing anyone knew was noun and verb. Teacher had a complete meltdown.

So for next week em the entire school, every English class was School house Rock videos.

Married to a teacher.

Logic has no part in most elementary classrooms.

I argue we need to go dumber.

Have a basic certification that you can teach vowel sounds. Bring in plenty of cheap people to lower grades and have them work 1 on 1 with each student.

Seen way to much of teachers teaching to what the kids are supposed to be capable of, vs what they actually are.

nullserver··on As Bad Information Spreads, Florida Schools Seek to Teach 'Digital Literacy'
Children can be taught to believe basically anything, easily. Teaching them to question and then things through comes much later.

Got a a decent dose of class warfare ideology growing up. Spent years after college reading various opinions before finally settling on my own beliefs. My oldest asks me who to vote for. She gets annoyed when I try and explain the various viewpoints of each candidate, and some pros and cons.

I now firmly hold the belief that it’s immoral to vote if you can’t be bothered to study up on some basics. Like a what is a bond.

nullserver··on Why do interviewers ask linked list questions?
Hand them a small hash/dictionary

{a=>1, b=>2, c=>2} Have them swap keys and values.

See if they can cope with duplicates.

On large hiring spree (20+ hires, hundreds of interviews) I would walk in, give them that in any language they wanted.

Moment I saw they understood, I would let them know they passed and walk out. Let others handle the social aspects of interviews.

90% failed test or took ages to get to solution.

Remaining would finish it under a minute and be confused as to why we gave them such a trivial test.
