nwp90··on “@ubuntu asks us to bill you 1e-2e per month for each VPS/PCI/PCC/SD”
There was no snark - just a need to come up with a set of different names for Mozilla software modified as necessary by Debian.
nwp90··on The Machard Knot and its 16-year-old inventor
I'm curious as to how this (which I know as a "French Prussik") could possibly be jammed. IME, and that of the guides who recommended it to me, this is far less likely to cause jamming problems than a traditional single or double prussik.

For ascending, I believe their recommendation was to use a traditional single prussik for the harness, and this for the leg loop. This is certainly easier to move up an untensioned rope than a traditional prussik, but may also slip slightly more readily, I think.

Personally, I've used it mainly as a backup when abseiling; I can't understand why it's not universally used there (attached to leg-loop and below the abseil device) - you just keep your hand on it and it will allow descent, let go or allow it to move up and you are stopped.

nwp90··on Why do buses bunch?
I'm sure there are several valuable lessons hidden away in there - concerning assumptions, human factors, jumping to "obvious" solutions without having verified the actual cause of a problem, unintended consequences etc. etc.

Would be interesting to look at a system where it does actually work well and see what's different.

nwp90··on Why do buses bunch?
When I lived in London, and used buses fairly regularly, I started thinking about ways to improve the service and stop bunching. I considered the reason stated here, and some of the solutions, but later realised that the root cause was that the drivers liked to stop and chat and perhaps play cards with each other at the (presumably unsupervised) "bus station" at the far end of the route. Once I'd observed 3 of them waiting for each other, chatting, and then all leaving at once on the same route, my interest in trying to think of ways to fix the problem waned.
nwp90··on Why is perl losing its touch?
No, it doesn't. There's no reason for the proportion of people looking for perl related stuff who use "perl language" as a search term to change over time. That proportion might affect the absolute numbers, but not the trends.
nwp90··on How Chris McCandless Died: An Update
If you read "Into Thin Air", make sure you also read "The Death Zone" by Matt Dickinson - an interestingly different perspective on the same event.
nwp90··on Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2
"My fear is that teachers will now choose for Windows on the RPi, since that is what they know."

Well, no. Almost none will have used Windows without the GUI.

nwp90··on Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2
Seems more likely Broadcom have been helpful than MS from what the RPi folk have said. I'd guess that they weren't originally expecting it to be feasible to get what appears to be a custom SoC made.

Note that when the B+ board was designed, they already knew the pinout of the new chip and were leaving space for it.

nwp90··on Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2
I noticed libreoffice doing this yesterday. Very disappointing.
nwp90··on Why Sweden Has So Few Road Deaths
In the UK and France, the +1 was available for use by traffic travelling in either direction. It sounds like in this case, they're talking about one side being allowed to use it for a spell, and then the other. Similar to the overtaking lanes provided here in NZ.
nwp90··on What I Like About PHP
sigh http://eev.ee/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/

Worth reading once, if you keep wondering why everyone is slagging off the language you love (and that language is PHP).

nwp90··on RMS on why Emacs lisp doesn't have namespaces

nwp90··on London’s Legendary Taxi-Driver Test Puts Up a Fight in the Age of GPS
A lot of people seem to miss the point that the Knowledge also acts as a deterrent to bad behaviour by proper cabbies - they have too much invested in their license to be likely to throw it away lightly.
nwp90··on Loyalty Nearly Killed My Beehive
A neighbour of some of my bees had a Labrador pup that kept trying to catch bees in its mouth. It apparently reacted badly (which became expensive), and didn't learn. Had to move the hives in the end.
nwp90··on Loyalty Nearly Killed My Beehive
This - http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Bees-Honey-Selling-Beekeeping/dp... - is one of the "standard" books, in the UK at least.
nwp90··on Loyalty Nearly Killed My Beehive
I agree (in that I wasn't impressed by that project) :) - also trying to find time to build temp/humidity/weight/sound monitoring. Would be interested to hear your thoughts. monsterlemon@gmail.com
nwp90··on Loyalty Nearly Killed My Beehive
Yes. In NZ we don't have them, but one of the guys who works for AsureQuality (google them) on bee-related stuff here is from Paraguay, and his description of beekeeping experience there (where basically all their bees are apparently Africanised) makes me think I probably wouldn't enjoy the experience over there.

Here, you can open a hive of "gentle bees" on a warm day and they will sit on the frames and basically completely ignore you.

There, I'm told once you take the lid off, most of the colony will take to the air to have a go at you. Which makes examining the frames easier, as they're no longer covered in bees - if there aren't too many on your veil, I guess.

nwp90··on X to close
Yes, it's different, but the article was trying argue that since "X" wasn't used in that context at the time it was introduced as a GUI element, the GUI element couldn't possibly be referencing the letter as a way of closing a program. While I agree that it's unlikely that the GUI "X" refers to a letter "X", that's not a valid argument for that position.

Edit: and thanks for the vi ref.

nwp90··on X to close
No 'x' to close vi? Was that not always there? I've certainly been using it as long as I can remember; that's not to say it's always been there though - does anyone know when it was first available?

Edit: seems Wordstar used X too, probably starting in 1978.

nwp90··on Free, Worldwide, Encrypted Phone Calls for iPhone
Yes. Signal for Android will be coming, apparently, and will integrate RedPhone and TextSecure capabilities. According to the original article, "Signal will be a unified private voice and text communication platform for iPhone, Android, and the browser. Later this summer, Signal for iPhone will be expanded to support text communication compatible with TextSecure for Android. Shortly after, both TextSecure and RedPhone for Android will be combined into a unified Signal app on Android as well. Simultaneously, browser extension development is already under way."
nwp90··on Apple Claims Mogenerator's Methods
Why not just add a means of invoking it such that it generates "special" method names when used by Apple, and (if necessary) use the license to require that they use them?
nwp90··on Microsoft launches Office for iPad
Except that it doesn't measure the actual using at all; I seem to recall there being rather more interesting stats than just vanilla "market share" in the iOS vs Android comparison that show that while more people have Android devices, more people with iOS are spending more on, and using more Apps.
nwp90··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
Facebook needs to move to Oculus, not try to tie Oculus to what Facebook currently is. If they're thinking more that way, there's hope. I have very little faith in them allowing anything remotely awesome to come out of this, though.
nwp90··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
Are you aware of the history of the City of London Corporation? And its voting structure? If so, to try to equate it with any other government anywhere, seems rather disingenuous. If not, I suggest you have a look on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London_Corporation
nwp90··on Adrian and Jacob retiring as Django BDFLs
I think a project that is to continue to be relevant for the long-term needs a vision, and that that comes from a leader. Once the leader is gone, the vision doesn't develop. At some point the original vision will no longer fit the changing circumstances around the project, and either a new leader and a new vision will emerge or the project will fade away (or both, if the new vision doesn't work).

On the other hand, if at some point the original vision is accepted by the mainstream, the project will be successful and popular for a while, the more so if it ceases to move on and develop its vision. Then at some point the project will fade away as the Next Big Thing arrives.

It's not always possible for a project born of one vision to adapt to a new reality - even if the leaders can foresee it perfectly - without starting afresh.

Given that, and that the skills and personality needed to "maintain" a mainstream project are different to those needed to develop and make concrete a vision, it's good that creators move on.

To me, Adrian and Jacob moving on is a sign of Django's settling into the mainstream. It'll stick around for a while, and then it will fade away. The Next Big Thing is on its way.

To Adrian and Jacob - I hope you enjoy your new ventures; and thanks.

nwp90··on Dell Wasn't Joking About That 28-Inch Sub-$1000 4K Monitor; It's Only $699
I've got two U2713HM. One at work, connected to a Mac Mini (HD4000) via displayport. The other at home using HDMI (so not up to full native res). The only problems have been caused by the Mac Mini (and have happened no matter what the connection being used was). We're also using it to connect a few other large monitors to various Macs.

I don't think your problem is anything to do with displayport. In fact, I'd recommend using it to anyone connecting a large non-Apple monitor to anything with a miniDP or DP connector to drive it. Shame that miniDP to DP cables are so hard to get hold of (down here in NZ, at least).

Edit: I'm running Linux, most of the others are on OS X. As I said, only problems have been the Mac Mini's fault (happens with all connectors and OSes).

nwp90··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
Ha. I have never started contributing to Stack Overflow, because it won't let me. It appears that you can't provide answers without first asking questions. When I have questions, I use Google or IRC. Every now and then Google throws up SO questions I can answer (or improve answers to, or point out FAIL in the answers to) on the way to my finding an answer to the original question, and I log in to SO and try to contribute...

So my attitude to SO is pretty much "meh". I'll take useful answers (and sometimes there are really good ones), but if they don't want me to contribute, stuff 'em.

nwp90··on Why Clipperz is moving out of the US
You seem to be missing their point; they were worried that previously, there was a possibility of their servers etc. being seized for investigation (a la Megaupload) based on these dodgy wire transfers. They believe that in Iceland there is less chance of this happening.

In other words, they believe Icelandic authorities will be more likely to tell the Italian authorities where to go than would the US authorities. This doesn't seem unreasonable.
