oatmeal1··on Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections
Biden definitely won, but our election security should be a national scandal. Voting machines should never connect to the internet and shouldn't run closed source software.

John Oliver had a fun segment on it:

oatmeal1··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
90% of those cancer kills are elderly. The elderly indirectly kill many people and ruin society because they keep voting after their brains turn to mush.
oatmeal1··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
Did the Golden Rule apply to women, gays, and slaves over the last 3000 years?

The definition of moral imperative is "an ethical principle, rule, or action that is strongly felt, urgent, and required because it is morally right." The Golden Rule is clearly not a strongly felt part of the human condition, or it would not be so ignored over ages and continents.

> It's an incredible engineering achievement to build in massive fans and rocket engines into a high performance car. It's truly wild.

It's not a high performance car. It's a shell of a car.

oatmeal1··on Nature's capacity to 'bounce back' when species are lost is overestimated: study
Surprised to find anti-intellectualism like this on HN.
oatmeal1··on Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis
The majority of the affordability crisis stems from car dependency and excessive need for infrastructure due to bad zoning policy.
oatmeal1··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
That falls under deceptive advertising.
oatmeal1··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
The pay for doctors does not matter for recruiting more doctors when the bottleneck is residencies.
oatmeal1··on Two American Airlines Flights End Up with the Same Flight Numbers
The probability of it becoming a catastrophe was infinitesimally low with the existence of TCAS.
oatmeal1··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
It's basically a benevolent dictatorship due to one party being in charge for the last 67 years.
oatmeal1··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
I saw a DW Planet A documentary about decommissioning a nuclear plant in Germany. They walked around the plant in some safety gear, but with their faces fully exposed and no breathing apparatus. They said the project was decades behind schedule and it was costing ten times as much as expected. The decommissioning process involved spraying water and gels on slightly radioactive materials from the factory to reduce their radioactivity to effectively zero. The process created much more radioactive material than there was in the first place, which then itself had to be dealt with. The cost of decommissioning is determined by the lobbyists for the companies that do the decommissioning. Voters have no idea what decommissioning should cost, and no one will ever question going over budget. It's a great business.

oatmeal1··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
The difference between you and Amazon is hundreds of millions of dollars in political donations and lobbying. Amazon certainly has the political connections to make defense of its datacenters a national security priority of the strongest military on earth if it made it a priority.

Excluding war as force majeure in the Middle East is the same as excluding high tide as force majeure building a sandcastle at low tide.
oatmeal1··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
Braess's/Pigou's Paradox that more car lanes cause more traffic was found in the 1920's. We massively overbuilt for the car regardless and keep getting worse traffic to this day.
oatmeal1··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
What democratically established laws? This is America. Policy is determined 95% by monied interests over the preference of voters at large.
oatmeal1··on iPhone Duo
There are compromises to any proportion decision. A tall rectangle is much more natural to hold than a fat rectangle, especially at the size of this device. The user also has to relearn the location of on screen buttons that have always had a consistent location.
oatmeal1··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
High density development leaving as much pristine nature as possible is vastly superior to sprawl for the environment, but the comment you replied to didn't seem to describe a density issue.
oatmeal1··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
There's more food, less energy wasted fighting excessively strong current, and more places to hide from predators. Water quality goes up downstream of a beaver(-ish) dam.

oatmeal1··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
It's not unusual that the "shadow docket" orders have limited briefings when the extent of the ruling/order is usually procedural, as opposed to ruling on the merits of the case.

It should be noted any justice can write a dissent in a "shadow docket" ruling. If a justice finds a ruling incorrect, nothing hides their criticism of it from the light.

Ecocide should be taken as seriously as homicide.
oatmeal1··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
I haven't seen any claim that it was isolated to one ethnic group. I have only seen the claim that it was disproportionately immigrants of Pakistani background.
oatmeal1··on São Paulo resident transforms degraded area into urban forest
I find the idea of planting trees ironic. It would seem to me the better aim would be identifying the issue as to why native plants are not already reproducing successfully, and then fix it. Plants are quite good at reproducing themselves, even if not in the immediate area.
oatmeal1··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
> There's still a need for growth in just traditional datacenters hosting things like your email and Netflix, not just AI, and those projects are going to get swallowed up in the AI hubbub

Growth in almost any datacenters is not worth the environmental cost, and even the benefits are dubious (e.g. more datacenters to host Netflix content is a net negative if it means people spend more time sedentary indoors).

oatmeal1··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
> But people who hate on cars don't want to hear the truth

A tad heavy on the rhetoric, wouldn't you say?

oatmeal1··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
Subsidies for using non-car transit would make more sense (health benefits in addition to safety and savings).

>I assume the 18-tonne lorries that move most of the world’s goods would be exempt, too, or would you pass that cost on to consumers? Just make everything a bit more expensive for everyone.

The demand for large vehicles is inelastic in the short term, but over the long term, more alternatives would be found and the share of the burden to consumers would reduce. Remember also the savings on road maintenance that consumers that pay taxes must pay for.

oatmeal1··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
We need a pigouvian tax based on vehicle weight to address the increased deaths due to noise pollution, collisions, and increased wear to roads.
oatmeal1··on YC founder asks desperate job seekers to tattoo themselves for an interview
They didn't think it was a bad idea because they don't have a sense of right and wrong. If something is potentially profitable and technically legal they will do it. This is what YC screens for.
