oatmeal_croc··on Amazon RTO policy is costing it top tech talent, according to internal document
5 days a work is diabolical. I was laid off earlier this year, received an Amazon offer and turned them down when I got another offer that was 3 days a week in the Bay. Now I wouldn't mind if I lived next to the office, but I don't. Commuting 5 days a week would ruin my life.

Now I'm definitely not "top talent", I'm as middle of the barrel as they come, but if I feel this way, I'm sure folks much smarter than me would just block Amazon recruiters on LinkedIn.

oatmeal_croc··on Amazon RTO policy is costing it top tech talent, according to internal document
It's a pretty non trivial problem to build and maintain infrastructure and customer relationships at that scale, yes, including the myriad of services they provide other than just "compute slices".
oatmeal_croc··on Cellular Starlink expands to support IoT devices
The starlink terminal literally has GPS - so Starlink already knows the location - whether it needs to get more accurate coordinates using beamforming is a question.
oatmeal_croc··on “Streaming vs. Batch” Is a Wrong Dichotomy, and I Think It's Confusing
Streams -> optimized for latency

Batches -> optimized for efficiency

oatmeal_croc··on How we made billing backendless
You could also say "I made the billing a winged cow sailing a boat" and it would be a figure of speech.
oatmeal_croc··on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority
Yes, but it is not a priority. GTM is the priority. Make money machine go brrr.
oatmeal_croc··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Where do you get your information from?
oatmeal_croc··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Floodlight companies don't appear overnight. I suspect they won't appear at all, given the instability of the tariffs and the fact that the next President (or even the current one) could wipe them off, rendering their shiny new Floodlight factory completely useless overnight. This extends to any industry.

Tariffs need to be stable and updated with several months of advance notice - otherwise they don't serve their purpose.

oatmeal_croc··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
The interesting thing is that India already has high tariffs for goods coming from China, however this might be different for finished vs non-finished goods and for consumption vs re-export goods. The tariffs aren't cheap though. Iphones not manufactured in India and sold there are significantly more expensive due to all the tariffs.
oatmeal_croc··on The Ozempocalypse Is Nigh
Of course it does, it is just much less effective than the injectable versions.
oatmeal_croc··on The Ozempocalypse Is Nigh
The thing is, GLP-1 isn't that hard to make, and these compounding pharmacies make effectively the real thing.
oatmeal_croc··on The Ozempocalypse Is Nigh
Few people actually pay 1000/month. Most get it through insurance (I pay 25/month), and most of the remaining get it through compounding pharmacies like HenryMeds which comes out to 300-400 per month.

In fact, I know a few people who get brand pills (Rybelsus) mailed from India, where it's much cheaper. This insane pricing is a US only thing.

oatmeal_croc··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
There's a TV show called parks and recreation which has that exact premise.
oatmeal_croc··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Even if true, so what? These are increasingly looking like a competition between nation-states with their trade embargoes and export controls. All's fair in AI wars.
oatmeal_croc··on EU law mandating universal chargers for devices comes into force
That's not entirely true - the Tesla has a few hundred watts of overhead when charging - so a 240 W charger would probably not get over that hill. You could maybe keep the screen on and watch a movie while connected via USB-C.
oatmeal_croc··on New physical AWS Data Transfer Terminals let you upload to the cloud faster
I'd imagine with LLMs today, discovery work is probably done on the cloud by bots.
oatmeal_croc··on New physical AWS Data Transfer Terminals let you upload to the cloud faster
Judging by the locations (New York and LA) I wonder if this is to cater to folks from production houses who want to upload large video files for processing or backup.
oatmeal_croc··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
This. You'll need studies to prove that semaglutide causes muscle mass -so you need to have a group that loses weight using semaglutide and another group that loses weight without it and compare the muscle loss. I'm willing to bet you'll see similar numbers. If you don't exercise, you will lose muscle mass when reducing weight - which is why trainers recommend resistance training and higher than usual protein while cutting.
oatmeal_croc··on 7/67 Children Receiving Skysona Gene Therapy Develop Blood Cancer
I must admit I'm not a very medically literate person - someone please break this down - is this good news or bad news? Were we expecting more people or lesser people to develop blood cancer?
oatmeal_croc··on Show HN: A macOS app to prevent sound quality degradation on AirPods
I mostly use Zoom for work calls, you can select microphones and speakers individually. I found that if you select your Airpods as your speakers and your laptop as your microphone, the sound quality on the Airpods suddenly get way better.
oatmeal_croc··on Uber terms mean couple can't sue after 'life-changing' crash
The insurance exists mainly to discourage customers from making an informal deal with the driver so Uber loses its cut.
oatmeal_croc··on Gazette: Cloud-native millisecond-latency streaming
What's the use case for millisecond-latency streaming? HFT? Remotely driving heavy machinery? Anything else?
oatmeal_croc··on Patagonia gave its staff 3 days to decide to relocate or quit
You usually need to return relocation costs if you quit within a year, and they'd lose out on the severance as well.. But yes, it does make sense for some people especially ones on a work based visa.
oatmeal_croc··on North Dakota voters just approved an age limit for congressional candidates
Unfortunately for you, the vast majority of people who riot are between 18 to 30. And they'd be right to riot.
oatmeal_croc··on The Average American Man Is Too Fat for Universal’s New Mario Kart Ride
"The average American man's waist is 40.5 inches, which means most American men would be excluded from the ride. The average American woman's waist is 38.7 inches."

I am in disbelief, I'm pretty obese but looks like I'm under the mean.

oatmeal_croc··on Tesla shares tank after U.S. discounts doubled on key models
Looking at current state of FSD, it'll probably end up shooting itself.
oatmeal_croc··on Ask HN: As a software engineer, where do you look for jobs these days?
I just reply to recruiters on LinkedIn. Lots of startups are still hiring these days, while large company hiring has gone down.
oatmeal_croc··on 81% of IT teams directed to reduce or halt cloud spending
"further 29% noting they’ve switched public cloud providers in the first half of 2022 due to high prices"

Wait, what? There's no way 29% of companies noped their way out of cloud provider lock-in. Not saying it doesn't happen, but 29% is a huge number.

Unless of course they're startups with no idea how they want their infrastructure run or legacy companies dipping their feet (?) in the cloud for the first time.

oatmeal_croc··on Equifax used records it collects from companies to fire employees with 2nd jobs
Paying for other children's education gives you benefits like lesser crime and will keep the value of your property high.
oatmeal_croc··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
I'd say no. For thousands of years, we've been the colonisees, not the colonisers.
