obahareth··on Meta Segment Anything Model Audio
I tried it with their examples, trying to isolate speech only or background music only, but it seems to produce audio that is near identical to the original.
obahareth··on Control iPhone with the movement of your eyes
I had a very bad experience with it, it’s almost trying to select the complete opposite of what I’m looking at. Tried on iPhone 15 Pro.

obahareth··on Ask HN: How do you code when you're not feeling well?
For me, I recently got into drinking Yerba Mate (unsmoked, traditional way) and it's made me able to stay productive even in bad days.

Not really a technique, but something that worked for me.

EDIT: This is for when I'm feeling unproductive/down, not when I am feeling ill. The best thing for illness is rest and the right meds and nutrition.

obahareth··on Ask HN: Bidirectional Text Navigation
Yeah browsers are much better at this but there's still a lot of places where it's problematic (e.g. Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, etc.)

In terms of text editing no not really, most folks I know are either using Word, Pages, or Google Docs.

Usually the caret going the opposite direction is because of bidi characters. It would behave properly if you used Eastern Arabic / Indo-Arabic numerals, e.g. ١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩ because those count as RTL.

If you need to have on line that has both RTL, bidi, and LTR, that's when I find everything goes to hell no matter what software I am using.

obahareth··on Ask HN: Bidirectional Text Navigation
I'm bilingual and frequently use English and Arabic together.

What I'm used to is that the caret is unchanged.

The best setup I've seen out there is web browsers with dir set to auto and using properties like padding-start instead of padding-left.

If I start a block with an LTR character the content is automatically left-aligned and vice versa.

The annoying issue comes up when you have bidi characters in the middle of RTL (e.g. Comma or exclamation mark), all tools I've currently seen just break, I have no idea where the cursor is, or where it will move to when I press my arrow keys. I would prefer that bidi characters are treated the same way as the paragraph or block they're in.

I wrote an article a while back with some GIFs that showcases these difficulties:

https://blog.prototypr.io/the-case-of-the-jumping-dot-17f97a...

I've not found any software that gets it all right when it comes to mixed direction content, but for RTL-only then most of the popular word processors (e.g. Google Docs) are quite good with some tweaking.

Happy to chat more on this.

obahareth··on Apple changed how reading books works in iOS 16
Some of the ones from Onyx Boox have customizable cold/warm temperature sliders.
obahareth··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
Thanks for posting this, I was brought up the same way. It's very uncomfortable for me to have eye contact in a conversation, I usually just do it when greeting people.
obahareth··on Meta Quest Pro
I wonder if they managed to solve the text blurriness issues. On my Quest 2 I tried using Immersed, Virtual Desktop, and other software to create virtual monitors in VR.

Text was always very blurry no matter how much I played with resolution, monitor sizes, or distances. Images and video always looked great but for reading text it was completely unusable.

For $1500 coupled with them marketing it for work, I would hope they've solved this issue.

obahareth··on Suture: A Ruby gem that helps you refactor your legacy code
This looks really cool! It reminded me of another library I came across a while back, Scientist from GitHub: https://github.com/github/scientist
obahareth··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
Where I live, everything is based around WhatsApp. If you want to receive a package from Amazon/FedEx/DHL/UPS, etc. The shipment will only be delivered to the location you share with the courier on WhatsApp, if you're not on WhatsApp you can't even receive packages. There are so many other things like this that are happening only on WhatsApp, and if you're not on it you won't even be able to use basic services.
obahareth··on Dev Fonts
I use Pragmata Pro because it supports monospaced Arabic text very well and I frequently have to work with Arabic. I've never seen a font that supports monospaced Arabic before.
obahareth··on Go vs. Crystal Performance
There are a couple but I think the most Rails-like are Amber or Lucky: https://amberframework.org/ https://luckyframework.org/

There's also sidekiq.cr from the same person who made Sidekiq for Ruby: https://github.com/mperham/sidekiq.cr

Hey already picked option 1. Their app was rejected after doing that. There is no way to purchase anything on the iOS version.
obahareth··on Intermediate certificate used for issuance of Comodo certs has expired
Anyone have any idea for a fix for this? Is the only solution to either upgrade the OS or recompile OpenSSL and anything that depends on it (e.g. interpreted languages)? Or is there a simpler fix I'm not seeing?
obahareth··on Google acquires AppSheet
Very interesting, this seems very related to them force-migrating everyone to the new Sheets API that has a number of missing features.

obahareth··on Httpx: A Ruby HTTP library
This looks like a pretty awesome library and very well-written and documented library. I'll definitely try it out in some of my Ruby projects and I would love to see an adapter for Faraday.

Kudos to the author(s).

obahareth··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
The many failures (keyboard, screen, random freezes that need a hard shutdown) forced me to also switch to an XPS 13 on Kubuntu. I wish Apple would make a good Macbook again.
