oliyoung··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
> I don't know a single developer who actually uses it anymore

Its endemic in enterprise engineering/QA, for all the reasons we mourn its loss its big, and big is trusted in these circles

oliyoung··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
I have an LG OLED. It's gorgeous, but

- It's MAC address is blocked from the network

- It's never had WIFI credentials

- It's ONLY ever used with an Apple TV or PlayStation

oliyoung··on A Health Update
The mundanity of the last paragraph made me smile. That desire to just go back to normal -walking, debugging, comfort- after moments like that is incredibly under-rated.
oliyoung··on The new iPad mini
With a 5G radio, this is so much more appealing than the Duo
oliyoung··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
> you're probably not the likely target for the offer

but if I was that employable, and offered that severance, I'd not give it one second's thought

and that's the problem, these severance packages are more often taken by the best people in the company

oliyoung··on Epic Games Inc v Apple Inc
And none of this changes that

You have a CHOICE now

oliyoung··on Epic Games Inc v Apple Inc
Huge decision, maybe toughest Apple's seen yet.
oliyoung··on Subaru is killing off gas cars and will only sell EVs in Europe
> Since 2019, every new Subaru has come standard with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™

oliyoung··on Study shows cannabis is not associated with better sleep quality
Can't have great "sleep quality" if you can't get to sleep, and cannabis is (personally) unmatched for it
oliyoung··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
... and then comes the movie, and it's canon weight is going to blow it all up
oliyoung··on Woman who rescued injured crow keeps getting 'thank-you gifts' from birds [video]
We're told from kids that Australian Magpies will remember your face for years. Not sure if it's something we just pass it down
oliyoung··on Apple HomeView
I bet it'll use the CarPlay model, you have YouTube on your iPhone, it'll appear on the HomeView

Otherwise, my Google Nest is going nowhere

oliyoung··on Apple HomeView
The "No apps" argument is premature

Pedantically, CarPlay doesn't have "apps" either, you have iOS apps that have CarPlay interfaces, I'd expect that this has the same product lines, ie YouTube will have a HomeView version.

oliyoung··on ADHD as a circadian rhythm disorder: evidence and implications for chronotherapy (2025)
Almost my exact response.

And the cruel tragedy is that it becomes this self-reinforcing cycle.

Sleep bad > "Bad" ADHD day > Harder to fall asleep. Rinse. Repeat.

oliyoung··on Margaret Hamilton has died
What's your definition of "hacker"

In the Hacker News sense, its those of us who use tools to "hack" together solutions, not in the "hack" systems to gain entry

oliyoung··on Margaret Hamilton has died
Absolutley does
oliyoung··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"
oliyoung··on Ten lines of code that changed my world
> And always hotpink.

nah, `rebeccapurple` https://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2014/06/19/rebeccapurple/

oliyoung··on OpenAI hacked Australian Medicare portal
Saying "Medicare Portal" buries the lede a little here.

Medicare is part of "Services Australia", the larger social services government agency that looks after unemployment, support payments and public health. We access all of that through the one portal

Accessing "non-public" data through that is endictment on their infra security more than it is OpenAI

oliyoung··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
It is, they never changed their retail strategy (1-2 showcase stores per state + rebel & JD) here
oliyoung··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Eat Up Martha
oliyoung··on Dolly Parton has died
An icon, one of the best of us and a true one of one
oliyoung··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Medicare is the first scare campaign bought up in any Australian election
oliyoung··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
It's crazy that universal health is the political third rail in most modern countries but for the opposite reasons

In most of the world it's the policy that cannot be touched, just in Europe, Canada and Australia its _existance_ is invoilable, in the US the _introduction_ seems to be the unwinnable war

oliyoung··on Ask HN: What changed in your life when you started meditating (and how)?
> minimize the wandering of your mind

To paraphrase the wonderful Thich Nhat Hanh, include that in your meditation. None of us, even the most skilled mediators can get to the kind of clarity and simplicity that people expect from meditation.

It's not about emptying your mind, that's impossible, it's about learning to be fully present in the moment. Anchor in your breath, in your senses, in the right now and think "Breathing in, I know my mind is wandering"

I like to imagine it as a clear afternoon day. Some thoughts, some clouds will appear, but my presence is the sky behind them.

oliyoung··on 'The Odyssey' Proves It: Audiences Want Movies Made the Hard Way
Exactly, Nolan's use of CGI is perfect. Elegant and purposeful, and incredibly well executed.
oliyoung··on 'The Odyssey' Proves It: Audiences Want Movies Made the Hard Way
WE. JUST. WANT. GOOD. STORIES. WELL. TOLD.
oliyoung··on John C. Dvorak has died
First Om, now Dvorak.

Such a loss, the prototypical cranky geek. Loved his takes with Curry and Leporte

oliyoung··on Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8, and Anthropic's (Potential) Unravelling
The "640k should be enough for anyone" quote (even if Gates didn't exactly say it) is making the point is that _right now_ we have no idea about what our future needs and capabilities will be, we can't imagine what "should be enough" will be

640k was enough ... in 1981 ... almost fifty years later is 50,000 lower than a standard off the shelf PC now

oliyoung··on Bananas sprout in Rayleigh Garden UK after 15 years
