olmo23··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
wdym? ai is great at explaining things; it's one of the primary use-cases outside of programming.

> if an advanced theorem is proven, and no one alive is competent enough to comprehend it, does it even matter

For any applied mathematics: of course it matters if I can use a better algorithm for $PROBLEM. Yes, even if I do not understand it (I'd like a LEAN certificate tho)! As for pure mathematics, it can be argued that it never mattered in the first place.

I disagree. What might be "a few prompts in claude code" for you, could be a lot of work for someone else. Not everyone is comfortable setting up a domain name and hosting etc... and if you provide value, why not ask for something in return?
olmo23··on Advanced coding in low-resource programming languages
I can think of many reasons.... "we were using python to quickly explore the space and rewrote to rust once we figured out the interface and started to focus on speed and safety", or "the original authors wrote this software in smalltalk but we'd rather it be golang because this simplifies deployment"

> You prefer a changing codebase over something that has evolved and is being tested over a long period of time?

As long as the test-cases are there, why would I care what language software is written in?

Suppose you are a maths researcher and you come across a problem, ... most likely, you will feed it to an AI. There are two possibilities: either the AI solves the problem or it does not.

If it solves the problem, you can ask the AI to explain it you. But if it does not solve it, will you really wager 30 years of your life on the possibility that you might be smarter than the AI?

I keep hearing about people spending their entire career on a single problem. And I think that time has ended. I think in Mathematics will be like chess.

I suspect most of these projects are started by people who get Claude Code at work, and just want to make sure that they spend all of their tokens before the weekly reset. In that case, cost is not relevant.
olmo23··on A browser-native classic Visual Basic VB6 IDE
This is still true in JavaScript and many other modern languages.

Well, it's close in JS: 3 - 3.01 = -0.009999999999999787

navier stokes is not the only example of an open problem in maths that was solved by AI (eg the counterexample to the jacobian)

olmo23··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
I'm not sure what that percentage means, but power-cuts in Belgium are extremely rare.

Where do you live? Ipad kids here need to be explained what files and folders are. They've never even used a mouse.
olmo23··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
I don't understand this comment. We use AI for prototyping all the time. We write ERP software. Client wants to know how process XYZ could be automated? Send them a prototype UI (sans the three A's) so they can play around with it. Takes 30 minutes.
olmo23··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
If it wanted to: total war using nukes, followed by a nuclear winter. Satellites and drones track and exterminate remaining pockets of anthropic activity.

It doesn't need to have a habitable earth, it just needs atoms.

I heard the following analogy which made a lot of sense to me: suppose you're playing a chess match against Stockfish. Stockfish will win. Even if I cannot tell you what moves it will play, I can tell you with certainty how it will end.

Similarly, we cannot predict what AI would do.

olmo23··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
> While unlikely, we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from [Buckmaster and Alpöge’s] usage of our products helped improve our models.

Well yeah, if you use the free product they train on your data, ... I thought this was widely understood?

olmo23··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
This is because to build a pipe bomb you need difficult to source materials. This is not the case for other types of threats (cyber / bio).

I personally have no need for an LLM which will readily explain how to cut up the genotype of smallpox into small chunks which can pass the screening at the bio-labs, and can be readily assembled into the real thing by a second year lab-student.

olmo23··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
In your opinion, do you think ai can make eutorack modules by now? This is what I am waiting for: explain an idea to an ai, and sending the files to jlpcb to receive a complete working module (minus some THC soldering)

Humans are famously horribly aligned, plenty of examples in history.
olmo23··on Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production?
For us it's pretty much a standard request from our clients now: that they are able to use their chatbot to interact with the ERP systems.

Perhaps it depends on your previously saved memories, because over here if given the choice it's always reaching for either TypeScript or C.

> We need down-vote buttons for slop like this on HN. How can this reach the frontpage?

LinkedIn introduced a "Seems like AI slop" reporting option, perhaps we should consider asking for one for HN too?
