omar_alt··on Simulate cassette tape audio profiles using FFmpeg
This is interesting as I would assume multiple passes from each output would result in further multi generational loss akin to tape trading of band demos, soundclashes and dj mixes from pirate radio
omar_alt··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Oh great let’s have even more noise pollution because pedestrians won’t get out of the way of cyclists who are trying to beat their personal best time on their commute to work.

omar_alt··on AWS CEO tells workers to quit if they don't want to come back to the office
If AWS has such a high turnover of staff how does this affect the suite of new services that companies build their infra around?
omar_alt··on How CD pregaps gained their hidden track superpowers
I recall a CD of mine had hidden audio before track one circa 1997, a coffee table jungle breakbeat on a Symphonic Black Metal album:

https://www.discogs.com/release/373044-Arcturus-La-Masquerad...

Also on the topic of trying to push the compact disc to its limits a Grindcore group who had a bonus track where "All efforts were made to exceed typical limitations of 16 bit linear digital technology compression, limiting, and equalization curves have been created to deliver maximum gain structure"

https://www.discogs.com/release/4305023-Exit-13-Ethos-Musick

I had a period of bad luck in my youth where I believed all these new enhanced CD's and shaped CD's were damaging the tracking of the lens on my CD player so I gave Exit-13 a swerve and started to listen to safer music ;)

omar_alt··on The Twitch DJ Program
What is the maximum bit rate for mixcloud mixes? The audio quality of anything I upload sounds terribly degraded especially when I share it with someone who is not signed in
omar_alt··on When do we stop finding new music?
I find this argument interesting though I have found that the same Jungle music I listened to in the 90s is now cutting edge again similar to around 2007 when 80s Italo House was considered the most stylish and hippest thing to listen to.
omar_alt··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
One out of ~10 international shipments of records I had in the last year one was from FedEx and they sat on it in their out for delivery warehouse in a nearby town for two months with the usual pass the buck/pillar to post treatment. The extra fees plus customs they put on added up to 40% of the value of the items as well. DHL and UPS arrive within a week and are normally no higher than 25%
omar_alt··on Renting your music means accepting that it will disappear
Yes wanting to preserve musical history or be able to recall something you once liked probably falls into the rockist vs poptimist debate. Even listening to tracks in the order they were intended is either radical or primitive to the defenders of streaming.
omar_alt··on How Condé Nast bought and destroyed Pitchfork
At the time this was declared as a user base driven acquisition where Conde Nast assumed that the largely 20 to mid 30s male readership of Pitchfork would graduate to one of their traditional style publications once they came of age. Clearly it was misguided to assume that cash strapped college grads who grew up on mp3's and ramen would graduate to Eames chairs and Zegna fleeces without some VC backed lottery payout.
omar_alt··on The music industry's A.I. experiments
> heck maybe even virtual artists that they can spin up in-house so they don't have to pay anyone: the perfect 360 artist, geeze.

Spotify would love to direct the listener just to in house AI music that does not pay royalties to the big labels ;)

omar_alt··on The music industry's A.I. experiments
I was going to say it read like a puff piece about a corporation that makes most of its money from legacy back catalog
omar_alt··on The laptop that won't die
I enjoy reading posts about second hand Thinkpads outliving modern laptops but it is ironic to put a blog post on lo-tech frugality behind a paywall.
omar_alt··on Berlin's famed nightclubs, losing customers, face an uncertain future
Like London there might also be a diminishing demand from under 25 year old young adults wanting to go to nightclubs in Berlin. A taxi driver told me for weekends he would work a mile radius picking up people to and from Fabric nightclub, now the demand has tailed off considerably.

If young people are not compelled to go to clubs these venues they might have to wait out for the next generation and a potential culture change.

omar_alt··on Recovering Steely Dan’s second arrangement
Kulee Baba and The Bear are also great fully formed tracks from those bootlegs
omar_alt··on Recovering Steely Dan’s second arrangement
Yeah I imagine those tape versions will add more to the fan version. I have listened to the lo-fi original for many years
omar_alt··on Recovering Steely Dan’s second arrangement
Rather delighted to a hear high quality copy of would be hit 80s song that a tape engineer erased by accident
omar_alt··on Gen Z is drinking less at concerts
Concert tickets are also increasingly expensive as is merchandise and travel. Could it be that the least well off demographic doesn't want to pay a premium for drinks when it means more queuing and inevitably a bathroom break during the performance?
omar_alt··on The Problem with Music (1993)
I wonder what would be a good Steve Albini type plugin to get one of those increasingly rare young bands to sound like they had just recorded Rid of Me or Surfer Rosa? ;)
omar_alt··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
I don’t think you can spend much emotional investment on those songs. Modern music uses less words and notes than previous decades as well as avoiding melody, time signatures, triple eighths, codas
omar_alt··on Why do modern pop songs have so many credited writers?
I can’t think of a song chorus or a phrase that has endured in the last decade. If it was a gameshow question to complete the lines from these contemporary songs how many would struggle?
omar_alt··on Did the Music Business Just Kill the Vinyl Revival?
The thing I noticed was that the price of an average record skyrocketed in price but the demand for an adequate turntable has not been as noticeable.
omar_alt··on Tell HN: Vim users, `:x` is like `:wq` but writes only when changes are made
ZZ for me as well and I mapped :WQ to :w !sudo tee % >/dev/null
omar_alt··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
I paid £200 on an electric desk for working at home which has been a great investment.
omar_alt··on The cost of cheap TVs
My Sony Bravia never connected to the internet and has never been used to login to netflix or youtube. Though I use it regularly as a screen for a media center it isn’t smart enough to stay on for more than three hours at a time without me prodding the remote control which is only used to switch it on. As annoying as that sounds I imagine the only metrics it could be recording is how long it was on for as well as having nowhere to send the data to.
omar_alt··on Adobe at 40
I’m just thankful the closest I got to Adobe was installing Acrobat reader on a PC when I was a humanities student. After switching to software development I have never had to use Creative Suite or Creative Cloud.
omar_alt··on I help seniors with technology issues
As much as I appreciate my x220’s god knows what they would be like if I hadn’t replaced the stock OS. Thank god Ubuntu aren’t shipping Lenovo Vantage just yet
omar_alt··on Coming Home to Vim (2010)
It just shows that ten years some plugins have come and gone as have many GUI text editors however Vim endures
omar_alt··on The Canon Cat
A simple low energy computer that does one task like word processing or act as a terminal client with an ink display would be a useful for focusing on one task without distraction. I personally would love to have a low energy terminal device that I could work in for hours however my pessimism tells me there is not enough demand to scale this.
omar_alt··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
This is why it is important to not depend on a single commercial IDE to do all your work. Datagrip has been my go to for sql but would be willing to switch back to dbeaver if I had to. I also use Pycharm when a client has me working with Terraform alongside python repos. However the ide sugar for Terraform isn’t that beneficial and I often feel it would be better if I just went back to vim with a few tweaks for .tf files
