onel··on HeavyAI (formerly MapD) is now open source
What is the advantage of this running on a GPU? Seems interesting but I don't know the use case
onel··on Show HN: I got tired of travel spreadsheets so I made a travel planner app
This looks very nice. Any way to self-host it? I want my traveling data to be kept private but still use the software.p
onel··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
Using anything on top of wireguard or plain? I heard headscale adds a nice layer
onel··on Discord will soon let anyone find public server messages through Google
Both are great options. Easy to self-host. The difference is that luxer has a more modern UI maybe
onel··on I Hate Cookie Consent
There are solutions though

Extensions like Consent-O-Matic offers what we should have had: browser level cookie control

onel··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
As jon said, it is a frew service. Someone, somehow needs to pay for the service, bwing through something as bad as ads from your photos. We as consumers just need to be more comfortable paying a little to have these services. Immich on a vps is not that much
onel··on Linux 7.3 Released
I hear you, but I don't think is a good idea to say that someone who used AI for a patch, did not understand the changes. We can't conflate the two.

If you spent 20 seconds to generate a patch and just hurled over the fence to be reviewed is no worse than spending 3 hours to manually write a fix that fixes 1 thing and break 2 others.

onel··on Linux 7.3
That sounds reasonable. I would even go one step further and drop requirements to disclose AI use. I think the person submitting the work should be fully responsible for what they submit and is more than enough. If you have a karma system for contributors, you get a pretty good idea of who does a good job.p
onel··on Passkeys are not a trap
Initially I've also struggled with this, and the mental model I found most useful is that a passkey is used to log in into that account from that device.

If the website doesn't allow you to add multiple passkeys then that's bad ux and that's on them.

onel··on Passkeys are a trap
I understand the shortcomings of pass keys but I feel the tone of the article is a bit tin foil hat.

Especially this line: "I believe this was done in order to deliberately confuse users and encourage them not to look too closely at the fine text." Don't attribute to malevolence what you can attribute to incompetence

A lot of people have said there are pros and cons to any authentication method. Pass keys have drawbacks but they also for a lot of advantages.

onel··on Talorys – A self-hosted personal AI agent on Cloudflare's free tier
I think the most important part of self-hosting is YOU hosting the software you use. The tool/medium you are using is less important. If it's your own laptop, or a mini PC, or someone elses PC is less important. They are different.

If I use my old laptop to host stuff is fine. What if I live in an apartment building and a good neighbor has a big server and let's other poeple use it and host stuff on it. I have my own vm, etc. Does that count as self-hosting? I would say yes. What if I rent bare metal from a provider?

In my view self-hosting doesn't end at the boundary of my apartment.

As I said previously, everything comes down to trust. If I don't want to run my stack on someone else's computer because I don't know if they will be a good s steward of my data that's valid, and I should own my own hardware.

onel··on European Alternatives
I don't think a good idea to limit yourself to solutions only from your geographical area, but it's also a very ingrained " not from my tribe" human sentiment. It's hard to fight it.
onel··on European Alternatives
Still in it's infancy but Moose OS is fully EU built github.com/onmoose/os
onel··on Talorys – A self-hosted personal AI agent on Cloudflare's free tier
Yeah, I think we need to better define this term. To an extent people, call self-hosting using your own server in your own home. But I think using a VPS from hosting provider should also be an acceptable term. That offers a lot of convenience that will keep self-hosting out of reach of a lot of people.
onel··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
I don't think that's what the post mentioned. It says some new features will go with the new license, which is closed. Sad but not the same thing
onel··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
Vaultwarden, self-hosting that is now 1-click deploy
onel··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
That's a great article, but I think the author is over emphasizing a bit on the fact that the guy has PE connections. I also think that's most likely that will go in that direction, but IDK if that's the reason for it.

I think we need to be a bit more aware of our expectations from free products. By the end of the day on the free tier, and as long as you're not paying, you are a cost to the company. I think most of these problems go away if we don't rely or expect that much from free products. If we pay a little bit, even if it's just for the compute when self-hosting, it creates much healthier relationship.

The post also mentions GitHub. Let's be honest, they created a lot of value with the free tier, but we also can't have high expectations for a service we're not paying

onel··on Across the Globe, People Increasingly Say Social Media Is Harming Democracy
I don't think before is the right way to describe this. We are just more predisposed to react to that type of content. And if you see it more in your feeds then you have more interactions with it. I think in this case the blame is more on the people creating the content and the people putting in in front of us. It is pretty much hijacking our way of thinking
onel··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I keep moose os instance on a vps, for immich, cap (recordings), cal for meetings and one app for notes. Small productivity apps that I just like to have access to everywhere.
onel··on Show HN: OpenChart – OSS TradingView alternative with your own AI agent
Great work and props for focusing on keeping everything local and private
onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
Sure, it's fair not to judge someone regarding something they said in college, but the behavior of meta in the past 20 years kind of proves that they still abuse the trust that users put in the platform. And meta is 51% Mark
onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
Yeah I also believe that would be the case. The temptation is way too big. Mark also said that their monetization might be related to selling stuff: them getting a cut when you buy something through your agent. Which kind of poisons a bit the recommendation you might get from it. Muse might be biased towards products or services where it gets a cut.
onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
I think that's fair and not a problem if you feel comfortable sharing that. But I think what op wants to say is that not sharing your email should be the default state, and only giving that when you want to get value in return like in this case with your agent
onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
Just dropping in to say that this is no longer that big of a problem. There are hosted solutions only for agents from DO, Nous, etc But also more generic self-hosting solutions, where you can host a lot of stuff and also agents, like moose

I think as people realize that self-hosting is a good option. Good services will appear more

onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
And I see this few becoming more common. May I ask what agent you see? Most likely good for self-hosting?
onel··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
And I think that's fair. On one side is their abilities, or lack thereof, but on the other side, it's the privacy implication with something like Muse.

I think for the former we can wait for bethel model, have better skills or give them small enough tasks. But for the latter, the only solution is honestly just hosting your own agent and all this having access to the data it creates, what it runs and what it reads.

onel··on Mistral Large 4
This is a great story. I don't think we should expect someone to win in the first races they participate. There are football teams that never win the championship and they always play and strive to be better. Mistral it's definitely improving with each release and props to them for releasing open models
onel··on Mistral Large 4
Most comments you've made here sound like you're dismissing European AI though
onel··on Show HN: Helo – An email API from former Postmark folks
Props for taking another shot at this problem. Confused a bit about the pricing, are the in free 1,000 email in total or per month? After that it's $5 per month? And pay per email?
