orbitingpluto··on Microsoft to shut London Skype office putting 220 jobs at risk
But echo cancellation should not be a problem on mobile devices.
orbitingpluto··on Microsoft to shut London Skype office putting 220 jobs at risk
Well maybe their jobs could be saved by dedicating them to reliable tone production over TCP/IP. Ever try to access a mailbox or navigate a customer support call center through Skype?
orbitingpluto··on Windows 10 Embedded Product Key Tool
In Linux, get the embedded key as text by using: cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM
orbitingpluto··on OpenBSD on HP Stream 7
With Microsoft upping the free space requirements, are 32GB devices going to be abandoned? Upgrading a Stream 7 from Windows 8 to 10 will result in a shorter support lifecycle for people not willing to start from scratch installing the Anniversary update from USB. Windows 8.1 is supported until 2023. Windows 10? 2025.

BUT ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle?C2=18165&force... ) :

• Updates are cumulative, with each update built upon all of the updates that preceded it. A device needs to install the latest update to remain supported.

One is better off to not have upgraded to Win10 on the Stream.

When these were being dumped onto the market for $80 they came with free Office 365 Personal that I used on another machine. They also came with $25 credit on the Microsoft store. Sort of a no-brainer. If you run Chrome for any video they are able to play Youtube or Safari videos. It's a gym tablet, i.e. you won't really care if you accidentally crush it with an ellitical beam. The other use for the Stream is as a Chrome Remote Desktop for a real device.

I noticed in the privacy instructions that MS gives a setting to disable telemetry, but only on per project. So every time you open up a new project, it will be reporting on you until you (remember to) disable it.

Thanks for bringing me up to date. (1st gen Chromecast)
orbitingpluto··on You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video]
I'm talking about a filter, not calculations. And I'm so glad you mystically decided that your calculations were much more complex than whatever I was doing.
orbitingpluto··on You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video]
Real men use PowerShell to edit their Excel files. :j

edit: I did do this once, but it didn't scale to larger files. Also, it was the only option on those Windows RT Surface tablets.

orbitingpluto··on You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video]
Exporting from and importing to Excel from CSV becomes a life-saver sometimes. Once upon a time, I had to work on a 200k by 50 line Excel 2007 spreadsheet on a IBM Core Duo laptop with only 1GB of RAM and XGA scren. It would take ten minutes to apply a single filter. Writing VBA to export and then letting Cygwin do my work: curling regexing and sorting was the only option.
orbitingpluto··on FLAC Support in Firefox 51
Shouldn't casting FLAC on Chrome to a Chromecast be a priority? I may be a curmudgeon, but I have way too many CDs in storage in those 80 litre Rubbermaid bins that I only ever see as FLAC files on the media server.

orbitingpluto··on Reddit is still in turmoil
/r/the_donald had the "sheriff star" still displayed several days after it hit the media.

It's such thinly veiled hate speech. The tone of the denials hint to those who are anti-semitic that this will be their platform from which to indulge in their hatred.

Even a decade ago, no large corporate forum would put up with this sort of liability. It's crazy.

orbitingpluto··on Blockchain Graveyard
This just in, thieves steal cryptocurrency just like real currency.

The "protocol related" is by far the most concerning of course.

orbitingpluto··on The Great Library Rescue of Timbuktu
The irony of course is that jihadists seeking to burn down libraries will unwittingly desecrate copies of the Quran.
orbitingpluto··on How China Took Center Stage in Bitcoin’s Civil War
Context: A full node is about 80GB right now. I deleted a full node just the other day that was 94GB, but that had a lot of cruft. Storage is most definitely not an issue unless you're trying to run a full node on your laptop SSD.
orbitingpluto··on The Piracy Box Sellers and YouTube Promoters Are Killing Kodi
Or anybody who thinks purchase of the hardware alone entitles them to the content advertised. Who hasn't heard, "Where's Word and Excel on my new laptop?" (not 1:1 but close enough)
orbitingpluto··on Build a dirt cheap, tough-as-nails field computer in a Pelican case
Pshaw, Toughbooks. Real men use Dolch. (A friend had green screen version of one of these that came from Israel. He wrote his essays on it.)

http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/32672/Dolch-PAC-486/

As for the build like this, there is always the option to throw in a lot of modular battery capacity. With waterproofing it would be great for outside long running no grid projects.

orbitingpluto··on “Oculus removed the headset check from the DRM in Oculus Runtime 1.5”
And why is the person making amends? Shouldn't that be taken into consideration? If they're only saying sorry to take advantage of you again?
orbitingpluto··on “Oculus removed the headset check from the DRM in Oculus Runtime 1.5”
No it doesn't.

That's like arguing it was okay to cheat on your wife because of the state of the relationship. It's a douche thing to do either way.

orbitingpluto··on From file-sharing to prison: A Megaupload programmer tells his story
I've worked for an employer that has wanted me to do illegal things on their behalf w.r.t. payroll 'tweaking'. Refusal to do these things was causing lots of friction and so I did the prudent thing and quit. I've touched the code base that does payroll (doing legal unrelated tweaks). It is still probably being used to steal from their own employees. Am I to expect a knock on the door?

And maybe not discipline your employees for refusing to commit wage theft on your behalf?
orbitingpluto··on Bloody Plant Burger Smells, Tastes and Sizzles Like Meat
Possible benefit. Less chance of food poisoning over real meat? If a cow has a soul it has been clearly exorcised in most fast food beef patties by the lengths they go to to make them safe.

Thank you.
orbitingpluto··on New York passes bill making it illegal to advertise entire apartments on Airbnb
Has anyone experienced poor usability if they search their own city? Load up the VPN and suddenly it works? I have a suspicion that airbnb likes to prevent airbnb strata-enforcers from searching the site.
orbitingpluto··on Valve funding VR projects, exclusivity-free, with pre-paid Steam revenue
GOG had a promotion where they would add (some of the) games that you already owned on your Steam account to your GOG library. Hopefully they continue that.

If I have a game on GOG or Steam, I'm more likely to use Steam, unless I'm traveling and might be Internetless.

orbitingpluto··on The Intel ME subsystem can take over your machine, can't be audited
In fact, I still don't see much of a reason to upgrade quad core Yorkfield Q9xxx servers except for cheap SSD upgrades. An 8 year old desktop still compares favorably to a $700 laptop (except, of course, for electricity).
