orcajerk··on Low and moderate alcohol consumption not associated with increased mortality
Women cannot process alcohol as quickly as men.
orcajerk··on I’m a doctor: Here’s what I found when I asked ChatGPT to diagnose my patients
Back in 2004, took a seminar in college regarding Decision Support Systems and how they a manager or doctor could ask it a question and get a response to help them make a decision. Went to the doctor couple a years ago and he charged $300 to google search the symptoms. No thanks.
orcajerk··on Arizona Fight over Half-Cent Sales Tax Threatens Semiconductor Expansion
>be industry

>send everything overseas in the 90s due to "cost savings", eliminating tens of thousands of jobs post dotcom

>cry that analog cannot compete with taiwan foundries

>now wants these same citizens to fund their return to the states

If electronics are this important to the country and the military to be subsidized by taxpayers, maybe it should be nationalized with open source and open hardware. No patents, no offshoring, no importing, and no exporting allowed. Let the people become producers and create their own mini-semi conductor products with open standards.

orcajerk··on Starlink internet is going from rural savior to unreliable luxury
FCC spends billions a year cutting checks to big telecom rather than municipal or open access networks. Big telecom is gobbling most of the of the federal grant money too.
orcajerk··on EPA moves to limit toxic 'forever chemicals' in drinking water
Are they gonna ban most pharmaceuticals that are excreted into the drinking water?
orcajerk··on GPT-4
OpenAI is located in the same building as Musk's Neuralink. Can't wait for this to be implanted in babies at birth! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2RIvJ1U7RE

orcajerk··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
Last time I went to the doctor, he charged me $300 to google symptoms on a computer. Now you're saying I get to pay $300 for him to ask ChatGPT? No thanks. We all know that is where this is going - doctor decision support system, i.e. the AI has access to information locked behind expensive journals that the patient does not.
orcajerk··on Microsoft Bing hits 100M active users in bid to grab share from Google
Probably counting the Windows 11 users forced to use Bing search integrated into the OS https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/28/23618214/microsoft-window...
orcajerk··on Zero energy ready homes are coming
Things may be different now but some cities used to the condemn the house if it did not have electricity from a provider. It is a scam, considering most people did not have electricity even 100 years ago.
orcajerk··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
There's a reason most haven't moved to ipv6. ipv6 is a solution looking for a problem. What we really need is an ipv7 that takes the best of ipv4 and ipv6 instead of trying to force ipv6 down a reluctant user group.
orcajerk··on Netflix refuses to pay extra tax demanded by European internet service providers
Telecos, large and small, have to upgrade equipment on their own dime to accommodate Big Tech traffic and growth. Currently they are free riding off the telcos. If Big Tech is causing the drive to upgrade and doesn't want to pay, their services need to be turned off in unison across the EU.
orcajerk··on Germany opposes EU plans for client-side scanning
These are the same rulers that wanted to ban memes. We all know what this is really about - banning wrong think and criticism of them.
orcajerk··on Twilight of the Libraries: What Gets Lost When Books Go Off-Site and Online (2022)
Nothing. Digital is already more expensive because the digital publishers claim a physical book checked out x number of times needs replacing so if a digital book is checked out x number of times, the library is charged full price again. I rarely saw books checked out that many times to require a physically new copy due to wear and tear - libraries generally had staff that could repair the books.
orcajerk··on America Is Trying to Electrify. There Aren’t Enough Electricians
In the case of medical schools, it is controlled by the AMA. For electrician schools, it is the unions. Both seek to keep wages high and the only way to do that is to gatekeep the credential process. Remember those that teach at these schools are doctors and electricians that benefited from the controlled system. It is the reason programmers will never have a union and accrediting agency because corporations want wages to decline, not increase.
orcajerk··on Who rules Earth? Wild mammals far outweighed by humans and domestic animals
Ponder this question - if humans were removed from the Earth, would evil cease to exist?
orcajerk··on US Defense Department Lets AI Pilot Take Stick of F16 Jet Fighter for 17 Hours
AI will be used for population control and censorship. WW1 introduced new inhumane ways to mass murder tens of millions of people. AI in WW3 will be used in the same way - to thin the herd.
orcajerk··on America Is Trying to Electrify. There Aren’t Enough Electricians
There are plenty of people that want to be electricians - the schools only accept so many applicants. It's the same issue with the artificial doctor shortage - artificially limited supply to keep wages high.
orcajerk··on Could deep boreholes solve our nuclear waste problem?
Nuclear waste is a symptom of a bigger issue - our high energy requirements, which is directly related to our standard of living and population numbers. The US Dollar is directly dependent on our dominance as a military power and control over the energy market - oil is traded in dollars. This is why Libya was invaded, Gaddafi threatened to create his own currency. China and Russia learned from this, and as the US continues devaluing the dollar and expecting other nations to pick up the debt, they decided to detach themselves from the mess and create their own currency. After WW3, the United States will no longer be a global super power, but one of a few large players, ala England after WW2.
