oskarw85··on Be wary of Bluesky
Thanks, that's awesome! I will give it a try because I love idea of federated networks a lot. Just couldn't find my way in the jungle.
oskarw85··on Be wary of Bluesky
It's exactly that. I have an account on Mastodon that I haven't opened in months. I use Bluesky a couple of times a day. On Mastodon I couldn't find interesting accounts to follow for weeks. On Bluesky I was up and running after an hour thanks to starter packs. Ease of use trumps (what a word!) philosophy for me. And probably most other people too.

BTW I already lost 10 years of posting on Twitter. Did not care for a second. Do people REALLY care about their postings on micro blog sites? It's not like a box of photographs that I would pass to my children on my deathbed...

oskarw85··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
EU just signed huge deal with India.

Words vs reality.

oskarw85··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
Because all cops are honest, all warrants are lawful and nothing worrying happens in the land of freedom right now.
oskarw85··on Releasing rainbow tables to accelerate Net-NTLMv1 protocol deprecation
Some are very entitled to drawing lines on someone else's property. Why don't you mind your own business?
oskarw85··on Gpg.fail
Thank you for this excellent explanation!
oskarw85··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
How else are they going to sell it to all those micromanagers who micromanage things?
oskarw85··on 4Chan Lawyer publishes Ofcom correspondence
It's cute that you think anyone is going to kiss your American ass.
oskarw85··on Microsoft 365 Copilot's commercial failure
I am just a typical Office user in a small company environment. Copilot buttons started popping in various Office applications. When I asked Copilot in Outlook to summarise mails from one of my contacts it happily searched the Internet and said it found nothing. AAA experience.

oskarw85··on Font Comparison: Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono vs. JetBrains Mono and Fira Code
Not OP but I set Atkinson Hyperlegible on my e-ink reader and it served me well. I feel my reading speed has improved. It is pretty wide though so to put more text on the page I decreased font height a bit.
oskarw85··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
This is a spot-on observation. All LLMs have that "fake it till you make it" attitude together with "failure is not an option" - exactly like junior devs on their first job.
oskarw85··on Ecosia is teaming up with Qwant to build a European search index
I switched to Qwant 2 months ago after using DuckDuckGo for 4 years and Google before that. I live in Poland - and Qwant gives me the best search results of them all. Much more relevant than DuckDuckGo and much less sponsored content than Google. I'm really happy about how it works for me.
oskarw85··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
FI²N sounds like a nice first name (Fuck If I Know)
oskarw85··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
But how are all those people supposed to know that beforehand? Call yourself whatever you want but don't expect anyone to deal with your name-fuckery. It's called first name for a reason.
oskarw85··on Why AI Spending Isn't Slowing Down
Because everyone is too afraid to be the first to throw in the towel
oskarw85··on Kaneo – An open source project management platform
Me too
oskarw85··on Burn After Wearing
Exactly. Such a policy doesn't do anything to curb the amount of waste. It just shifts it to poorer regions and lines Mafia pockets with money
oskarw85··on EU Court finds overriding public interest in free access to European standards [pdf]
I'm not sure but I understand that this ruling applies only to harmonised standards mentioned in the original rulin. So harmonised standards related to safety of toys directive. Not all harmonised standards.
oskarw85··on HDMI Forum does not allow an open source implementation of the HDMI 2.1 spec
But this feature works by transmitting HDMI signals so you still need to implement the software part in question.
oskarw85··on HDMI Forum does not allow an open source implementation of the HDMI 2.1 spec
Especially when your monitor falls down from your desk instead of simply disconnecting at the plug.
oskarw85··on I applied for a software role at FedEx and was asked to take a personality test
Negative selection
oskarw85··on Show HN: Simple demo of a cold boot attack using a Raspberry Pi
It's nice to recover an image but encryption keys are not that. One bit flip and it's game over. This experiment is more useful for human-readable document forensics than anything else.
oskarw85··on Sally Ignore Previous Instructions
Ultimately it boils down to Yo dawg theorem nesting prompts into prompts for fun and profit
oskarw85··on Opening of West Point time capsule reveals what cynics said it would: Nothing
Spirits of those cadets are probably laughing off their spectral asses .
oskarw85··on Windows feature that resets system clocks based on random data is wreaking havoc
In my opinion writing that Microsoft fucked up where clearly other software puts bogus data in timestamp fields is laughable. Shit goes in - shit goes out.

I think MS should improve implementation in two ways: - ask known trusted sources (like their own servers) for SSL timestamp - use that timestamp only internally (as opposed to system-wide) to acquire valid NTP timestamp

oskarw85··on Windows feature that resets system clocks based on random data is wreaking havoc
That means your server could not serve HTTPS traffic at all, because you need valid timestamp for that.
oskarw85··on Elon Musk versus Mark Zuckerberg beef has reached a new level of absurdity
They both act like they are the most important people in the world and their shit doesn't stink. Yet they are following the footsteps of Ballmer and Bushnell.
oskarw85··on GitHub will disable non-2FA accounts?
Hey Mr. Know-it-all There WILL be a situation where you know nothing. Maybe your refrigerator would die and the technician would be scheduled two weeks from now. You would write about it on HN and some asshole would write:

So? It's not like shitty Samsung refrigerators is the only one model available.

I really do have to wonder about people who choose refrigerators using R407c refrigerant where temperature glide causes compressor valves to wear out prematurely. People apparently spent exactly zero minutes to try and find a solution.

oskarw85··on Write your passwords down (2010)
That's insecure because if the password leaks from any site it could be trivially used by attacker in other sites. And your algorithm is not safe at all because password crackers could guess your algo and generate millions of its variations.
