oslem··on Tesla Unveils 'Flying' Roadster with SpaceX Thrusters [video]
In a video by Hagerty’s, Tesla claimed that both variants will be sold, for whatever that’s worth.

oslem··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold
Almost weekly at this point
oslem··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold
Could be psychological tbh. It’s really not a big issue, but I’d rather refresh earlier. Although the storage problem is real and frustrating. And despite the chip shortages, the newer iPhones still come with far more storage than what I have now.
oslem··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold
I’m also getting ready to upgrade from my 3yo iPhone. For me, my phone is running out of storage, starting to feel a little slower, and the battery has less capacity. I’m sure I could wait another year, but I’d rather be a little ahead on updates than be behind on updates where my phone is creating problems for me.
oslem··on Kv4p HT – A homebrew 1W radio (VHF or UHF) that plugs into an Android phone
Sounds like a great contribution you could make!
oslem··on Local AI needs to be the norm
I would imagine running a local LLM for development isn’t as popular as using a hosted provider. I don’t personally host a local model, but I have shared GPUs and storage volumes with VMs and I didn’t see it as that much of a hassle. What kinds of problems are you running into?

Doesn’t ghostty also use graphics acceleration? I was under the impression that rendering text is a relatively challenging graphics compute task.

oslem··on Flighty Airports
I use their widgets more than the app itself. They display the most important information I need well imo.
oslem··on Why some clothes shrink in the wash and how to unshrink them
H&M is awful, but Uniqlo has some great products that will last. I’m a big fan of a few of their t-shirts, especially the heavy cotton tees. You really gotta get your hands on each product to know what’s worth the money though.
oslem··on Why some clothes shrink in the wash and how to unshrink them
Polyester is great for performance clothing where you need lots of moisture, but it retains stench really poorly compared to other materials.

When I travel, I love my merino + nylon shirts because I can wear them for days without washing and they fairly durable.

oslem··on Modern Linux tools
I always enjoy these lists. I think most folks out there could probably successfully adopt at least one or two of these tools. For me, that’s ripgrep and jq. The former is a great drop-in replacement for grep and the latter solves a problem I needed solving. I’ll try out a few of the others on this list, too. lsd and dust both appeal to me.

I just enjoy seeing others incrementally improve on our collective tool chest. Even if the new tool isn’t of use to me, I appreciate the work that went into it. They’re wonderful tools in their own right. Often adding a few modern touches to make a great tool just a little bit better.

Thank you to those who have put in so much effort. You’re making the community objectively better.

oslem··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Mind Your Manners brought back some seriously nostalgic memories. Thank you!
oslem··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
No offense, but this comment is very reductionist. The problem isn’t nearly as simple as you’re making it out to be.
oslem··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
100% agree. I would be fine if they had an estimated time-to-fully-charged displayed on the screen. I don’t need to know the status of my vehicle, personally. I would imagine a third party system could be implemented to achieve most of what one would need.
oslem··on Drag racers are ditching superchargers for scuba-style tanks and compressed air
You are absolutely correct. Perhaps I should’ve worded “detrimentally destroyed” as “catastrophic failure.” The rebuild process between runs is fascinating to watch. I’ve never seen an engine torn apart so quickly!
oslem··on Drag racers are ditching superchargers for scuba-style tanks and compressed air
I disagree. Drag racing involves incredible honed vehicle endurance, just on a much shorter timescale. It’s an engineering problem with the goal of outputting as much power as possible within a short timespan (often only a few seconds) without detrimentally destroying the engine. As far as the drivers are concerned, the reaction time is obviously important, but they have to be extraordinarily consistent. At that, they have to drive the car at 5 g’s- not an easy task.
oslem··on Show HN: Boulette - Protect you from yourself (even as root).
I’ve tried using iTerm2’s automatic profile switching feature to adjust the theme depending on the connection, but I’ve never been able to get it to work reliably.
oslem··on Installed an open source garage door opener, and I'm loving it
One thing I like about them is the peace of mind it brings. On the very rare occasion that I somehow forget to close my garage when I leave (maybe I’m in a rush and the button in my car didn’t register), it’s nice to be able to close the door remotely.
oslem··on Monorepo – Our Experience
Alright everyone, we’ve trained for this. Grab your popcorn and get a good seat. It’s the return of the of great mono/poly repo debate.
oslem··on DiyPresso: DIY Espresso Machine
You could make the same argument about a 250 euro espresso machine and a 30 euro moka pot. If the materials are better and the buyer likes it, it’s worth it to them at least. I think most people who own an espresso machine understand it’s a luxury.
oslem··on Leaving Neovim for Zed
I really enjoy using Zed whenever I can. It’s incredibly snappy and has a clean UI. I agree with some of the other sentiments in this thread that I wish that the developers would focus more on some core IDE features. If Zed had better Git integration and remote support, I could switch over to it full time.
oslem··on Leaving Neovim for Zed
I’ve used VSCode extensively because of its flexibility, remote extension, and (decent) speed. I enjoyed IntelliJ in the past, but I encountered countless performance issues on larger projects. This could be partially due to a subpar configuration, but over time I just gave up on IntelliJ and just used VSCode because it _just worked_.
oslem··on Ask HN: Any tools to do generic WiFi imaging?
There’s too much variation in size of wires and pipes for it to work well. Wires may also be tucked back farther on the stud.
oslem··on Ask HN: How to transcribe 1000s of handwritten notes
I’d imagine 16 hours is a low estimate if OP wants to retain formatting.
oslem··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
The “cheap” saws in this scenario are still several hundred dollars. A SawStop is made well enough to withstand multiple activations and costs $100 for a new cartridge plus the cost of a new blade. It’s kind of a situation where it’s “cheap to be rich.”
oslem··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
For (2), I believe SawStops do have an override switch to disable the protection just for this reason.
oslem··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
This isn’t realistic. Table saws are central to many hobbyist workshops and good table saw weigh several hundred pounds. Renting a table saw is far too inconvenient for most.
oslem··on Building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (2014)
I just drove across this bridge today. Always a great journey.
oslem··on Apple says it spent three years trying to bring Apple Watch to Android
I have a hard time believing that Apple is incapable of providing at least a limited API for the Apple Watch. I wouldn’t expect full feature parity when using an Apple Watch with an Android phone, but even some basic functionality like texting and simpler notifications could have helped avoid this legal trouble.
