ottbot··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2015)
Funding Circle, San Francisco

We're (seriously) building a better financial world! Our marketplace approach gives small businesses a fast, simple, and fair way to get the capital they need to continue to grow. We've lent over $1B globally, recently completed a $150MM funding round, and are investing heavily in technology.

We primarily develop in Clojure and Ruby (not so much Rails). We can do TN visa and H1B transfer and are focusing on growing our on-site team at the moment.

It would great to talk to people interested in working in Clojure(Script), React, Angular.js, and Mesos for frontend, backend, data science, or infrastructure roles to help us build a collaborative, professional, and diverse team.

You can reach me at rob@fundingcircle.com if you're interested in learning more.

ottbot··on Ask HN: Is this common in the gaming industry?
You know that's still pretty shitty right?
ottbot··on Pixie: A small fast, native lisp
Have fun.
ottbot··on New Tube for London
The phrase "pick your battles" come to mind here, I mean, scream with rage?
ottbot··on WebNES – A browser-based, mobile NES emulator
I guess it is because controls are only setup for touch input.
ottbot··on Nexus 5
I got an order in for the black 32GB version. No email confirmation yet though..
ottbot··on Ruby Tips Part 2
It could be more readable if you use a placeholder variable

  family, _ = socket.peeraddr
Which is more clear to me, but maybe not as much as just using .first
ottbot··on Introducing Stripe UK
Take a look at what http://gocardless.com are doing with Direct Debit in the UK. Not sure what "mobile payment" really means, outside of in-app purchases?
ottbot··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
I'm employed as a software engineer, but I have a mechanical engineering degree.. What should I call myself?
ottbot··on London Startup Map
Could you share some of these reasons? High rent, high salaries I'm sure, but I'd be interested to know what other reasons have.
ottbot··on How to identify algorithmic trading strategies
Have you seen https://www.quantopian.com/ ? Might be a good place to start.

thanks!

ottbot··on Unix tricks
Another nice job management tool is disown, which lets you log out of your session without killing the job (similar to starting the command with nohup)
ottbot··on Why Do Cars Have Brakes?
Perhaps we've driven beyond the metaphor.
ottbot··on Tom Preston-Werner: Development of Jekyll to be revived in 2013
I'm looking at building my company's CMS workflow with Jekyll so it's good to near this.

I'll have non developers creating and maintaining pages and posts, so I'm hoping I can build an easy workflow with just Jekyll and a bit of prose.io. I've not found any sort of site generator/convertor that's geared for use by non-developers.

ottbot··on What Happens When A Twitter Client Hits The Token Limit
You may not be aware such a thing exists, but I'd consider http://www.freesat.co.uk or or even http://www.freeview.co.uk to be (subscription) free alternatives to cable TV.
ottbot··on MIT overtakes Cambridge and Harvard to top spot in QS world university rankings
Indeed, Imperial College London is similar in this respect.
ottbot··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
Ah, I probably could have been more clear. I was expecting (hoping) for more information. It doesn't seem to have anything wrong, but it would be great if it was possible to get a more detailed version number, like 8.0.6001.18702.

Windows XP on Virtuabox

ottbot··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
It's unfortunate that when using IE, both this and supportdetails.com only give versions as specific as "Windows XP" and "IE 8", whereas I get more detailed version info using Chrome on OS X.

I'm trying to track down an IE issue and would love for our support team to get customers to use something like this. But we need more info to make it easier to reproduce the problem.

ottbot··on How to Participate in Hacker News
To participate in HN, you basically want to be sure to point out any logical fallacies, missing citations, and any possible reference to Godwin's Law, the Streisand effect, or the Dunning–Kruger effect.
ottbot··on Ultimate Rails developer & power user tools for Mac (2011 edition)
On a mac, the a quake like drop down terminal (or as a prefer, non animated full screen) can be had with TotalTerminal, previously called Visor, but now without SIMBL, or iTerm2. I find absolutely indispensable!
ottbot··on Xmonad 0.10 was released
Providing a reference for your joke doesn't really change much. I don't think you were downvoted because anyone thought your comment need citations, or because they weren't sure if it was actually supposed to be a joke.

Perhaps it was just a bit trite, and/or irrelevant.

ottbot··on Twilio launches in Europe
Great stuff, looking forward to meeting some Twilio folks at the Silicon Milkroundabout this Sunday.
ottbot··on TakeThisLollipop - really clever/creepy use of the Facebook API
Is it actually funny or surprising to you, given your hosts configuration, or did you just want to mention it?
ottbot··on Apple’s iOS 5 Update Now Available For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
Try putting your device in DFU mode. This worked for me, after that clicking restore (then update/restore) went straight to the verification phase.. Previous backup was restored when I finally get the update installed.
ottbot··on Apple’s iOS 5 Update Now Available For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
For the impatient: after downloading and backing up at least once -- you can put your device in DFU mode to try again (and again) without having to repeat the backup process.
ottbot··on Deft -- easy note taking for Emacs
This is probably good advice, and I think I'll give org-mode another try without trying to build it around someone else's setup.

I've been using emacs for years, but could never quite make an habit out of org mode. I think deft handling simple org files might be a good way to get started.

ottbot··on London riots / UK riots: verified areas
It's very frustrating knowing the police can do little to contain or manage the situation, and we're completely at the mercy of rioters as to what will happen next or when it will stop.

A group of 30-40 of them went up my street, smashing cars, and started congregating out front, all holding glass bottles -- this just when reports of homes being broken into started coming out. Absolutely horrifying, luckily something spooked them and they moved up the street.
