panny··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
>but then it took like a decade of little growth before the true benefits showed up

That's the core issue apollo is talking about. Investors have been told, "Buckle up, we're getting rich in 2027." Not "Hey, after 20 years, this will probably be pretty nice, maybe." This is how bubbles pop. Everyone starts to realize they were oversold and they rush to get their money out at the top. LLMs won't go away, but the financial collapse will be devastating.

panny··on Java sealed classes and exhaustive pattern matching
I don't think you need those switch defaults with the sealed types. I didn't check with a compiler, but I think those are unnecessary.
panny··on Recipes Are Moving from Maven Central to the Code Genome Project
>And in the end, the real issue at the root is that internet traffic, especially egress traffic, still is absurdly expensive, and the behavior of people like Sam Altman that sent RAM, SSD and even HDD prices through the roof is making the situation even worse.

The core problem is that dependencies don't really scale. Find a security issue in one dependency? It has to be updated. All the projects which depended on it need to be updated. Turtles all the way down. AI worsened this further by accelerating the churn with vulnerability scanning. Naturally, they focus on the core projects like apache-commons which fans out to basically everything in the Java universe. Which means maven central becomes overloaded and now needs to make emergency changes to stay solvent.

panny··on Polymorphism (Part 1): Stop Teaching "Dog Extends Animal"
I wish someone had taught MutableList extends List, and the parent collections were immutable in the API.
panny··on I do not know how to teach kids this low
Hey, at least your six year old elementary student hasn't shot you yet... School budgets are perhaps a little thin, but at least you're not struggling to pay out a $10 million lawsuit. So you've got that going for you.

panny··on Libreboot 26.10 "Ominous Olive" released with UEFI, Chromebook support
Nothing has changed about modern Intel CPUs requiring binary blobs. Libreboot is no longer blobless. Canoeboot is blobless. Libreboot is like decaf. It's not caffeine free, it's decreased caffeine.
panny··on Anthropic revenue jumps to $16.8B in third quarter
May I see it?
panny··on Programming Isn't Special
>none of the drudgery that goes along with it

The durdgery is what pushes languages forward to be more powerful and expressive. Thousands of programmers all facing the same drudgework, they came up with new languages. They weren't content to just accept Java, they made Clojure, and Scala, and lots of other languages. That in turn pushed Java to keep up or be left behind. Take away the drudgery and guess what? All that goes away. Just let claude crank out 30K LoC a day, who cares now?

I still remember back to when I was first learning to write code. I dreamed of code that wrote code for me. But it wasn't because I didn't want to code. It was because I wanted to code in something more elegant. Claude is for someone who says "I don't want to code, I just want to get paid" and it really shows. Slop is slop, even before Claude came along. The programmers who just want to get paid always produced slop. They just have a machine doing it for them now. Who needs them anymore really?

panny··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
>Cancelling visas or deporting them will not get American workers their jobs back.

Source? If the job legitimately needs to be done, and the foreign option is eliminated, the domestic option is what's left.

panny··on What I learnt co-leading an AI Safety bootcamp for legal and governance practit

panny··on What I learnt co-leading an AI Safety bootcamp for legal and governance practit
>You fall for this stuff?

This stuff? A spanish speaking critic of AI safety says, "Hey guys, it's really not so dangerous." What did you mean by "this stuff" precisely? Is it like "you people" perhaps?

panny··on What I learnt co-leading an AI Safety bootcamp for legal and governance practit
My entire opinion of AI safety has been colored by the fact that I recently learned AI safety is a sex cult.

panny··on Car Is Sharing Data with Big Tech
>Flock isn't so bad! Look how much privacy you've already lost...

How reassuring.

panny··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
>The card in question here had an initial MSRP of $1600.

63% of Americans can't come up with $400 in an emergency.

https://www.investopedia.com/here-s-how-many-americans-can-t...

The richest country in the world. Where all 50 states consume more than any other country in the world.

https://x.com/cremieuxrecueil/status/2102889196000256219

Can't come up with %25 of that in an emergency. (Even though the real price is something like 2-3x more than MSRP)

It must be nice, up there where you are so incredibly disconnected from reality.

panny··on Your body of work thinks back at you
Do you empathize with the fent addicts at the bus stop? Or do you not think about that in your car?

Personally, I empathize with the other bus riders who just want to get where they are going without being accosted.

panny··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
I'm far less interested in how good a big expensive model is on hardware 99% of people can't afford and would rather see what runs best on a chromebook or mobile phone with 8GB of RAM.
panny··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
>What do you not like about WebComponents?

I think the problem is not what I don't like about WebComponents individually. The problem is that to use WebComponents, you have to use JavaScript anyway and if it does not do exactly what you wanted, then you're right there, in JS, ready to DIY the problem away.

If WebComponents were purely declarative, I would try harder to use them.

panny··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
I don't understand why browser makers don't just steal the API from popular solutions like React honestly. That's "fair use" since Oracle v Google afterall.
panny··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
This is reminiscent of 90s Japan. Whisky consumption dropped during the economic hard times. Whisky manufacturers were forced to scale back production because of it. When demand came roaring back in the 2010s, they had no whisky to sell and a decade long runway to get production restarted. Whisky doesn't happen overnight. It's know as the Japanese Whisky Armageddon.
panny··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
A dark age will come. AI shredders destroy all the books then hallucinate what they once contained.
panny··on Every U.S. State Ranks Above Every Foreign Economy in Household Consumption
Interesting chart, but how is consumption measured? Dollars or stuff? Everything costs way more in the US.
panny··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
I don't support vagrancy and shitting in bushes. I would think most people can agree with that. That's a pretty low bar. You're the only one seeing races here.
panny··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
I've worked with "engineers" that make one commit in 2 months and it's a spelling correction. I'm pretty sure that being 7 times faster than that is still quite slow compared to me :) I hear a lot of breathless enthusiasm, but this article is possibly the first time I'm seeing the question answered "If AI is so great, where are all the applications?"
panny··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
>ollama to run qwen 3.8 27b

Installed this recently to try it out.

>pi.dev to write and implement openspec specifications, herdr to manage many pi instances

Thanks for mentioning the tools you're using successfully. It seems like most people using LLMs are keen to keep their cards close to their chest.

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
I'm sorry, what is your username again? I can't read it, because it's tiny light grey text on a light grey background.

Controversy shouldn't give me cataracts either.

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
>like a wasteful software program "polling" these data sources hoping that something really important will surface

This is me on eBay :)

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
You guys are saying this on a website which puts light grey text on light grey background.
panny··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
>This war started as a regime change operation in Iran

I believe this war started with a tomahawk missle murdering a school full of children and then the US denying involvement. I very clearly remember it. US attacks Iran unprovoked. First act, murder their children in school. If you wanted to solidify opposition to the US in Iran, I don't think they could have done a more effective job.

panny··on Claude is no longer available for minors
Techbros: It's fine to demand ID verification for everything, except voting, because that's racist.

But, it's nice that Anthropic is finally admitting claude is just a casino of code. Keep pulling that one armed bandit, maybe you'll get the right code next time.

panny··on AI Has a Discovery Problem
We're all ants. You can't see the whole sky by design. That's the "guard rails" they talk about.

The non-technical marketing person can't use it because they don't understand programming tools. AI is by programmers for programmers. AI agents might make perfect sense to someone who understands a posix pipe. Marketers don't.
