I saw it too - props to the engineer that set page title to "Error 502 (Server Error)!!1"

paranorman··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
Echo the love for this podcast, one of the easiest subscription purchases I’ve ever made. Jack is a great storyteller.
paranorman··on Building Remote Teams for Startups
Google was a fan of it, too. You should look into project oxygen.
paranorman··on Code to flood Kellogg with bogus job applications after strikers sacked
Exactly, deathbycaptcha is one I’ve seen in action more than 5 years ago. This stuff has been human powered for way longer than that.
paranorman··on Can’t Find a Rolex or Patek Philippe? Blame the Reddit Crowd
“See this smile? Ear to ear, baby!”
paranorman··on Launch HN: Flowly (YC S21) – Manage pain using VR and biofeedback
Just signed up, I'd like to have my wife try this out as well. Am I able to share my account with her?
paranorman··on No, I did not hack your MS Exchange server
Yeah that’s pretty brutal.
paranorman··on A beginner’s guide to web accessibility
This lines up with my experience working on product features for customers that have accessibility requirements. From what I’ve seen, most larger companies that care about accessibility (usually for fear of lawsuits) have internal folks testing with NVDA specifically. This is another great reason to use it for your testing because you can be confident the odds of someone checking your work with NVDA are good.
paranorman··on How to deal with difficult people on software projects
That’s a dangerous generalization imo. There are absolutely organizations that value folks who are receptive to constructive criticism and who are willing to keep an open mind about all sorts of things. These companies screen carefully for characteristics that align with that culture and I can say from experience that it produces a much better working environment.
paranorman··on What remote work does to engineering productivity
I switched jobs during the pandemic and my productivity has been incredible. I was doing great WFH in my last role but my current employer has much better support for this environment.

I won’t claim that any single tool is a miracle but I have found Clockwise combined with Google Calendar to make coordinating with others a breeze. The automatic status management in Slack when you’re in “focus time” or a meeting is great for signaling to others whether their question is better suited for a public channel over DMs.

For me at least, productivity when WFH comes from having a proper environment (noise cancelling headphones and an office are a life saver when your partner is watching the screaming toddler) and working in an organization that embraces distributed teams.

Edit: If you’re considering a switch to an org that does remote right, feel free to hit me up for a quick chat.

paranorman··on Stealing private documents through a bug in Google Docs
The 1337 could be a nod to gamer culture because it stands for “leet” and may be popular with the folks who participate in bug bounties. Pure speculation on my part here.

EDIT: yep, looks like I missed all the other comments pointing this out, mobile app didn’t load them for some reason. Leaving the comment anyway.

paranorman··on Twitch suspends DragonForce guitarist Herman Li for playing his own music
Are you implying he owns the copyright?
paranorman··on Facebook being investigated in Germany for tying Oculus use to Facebook accounts
I loved my Quest, even purchased prescription lens inserts for a better experience and after the Facebook account change I stopped using it entirely. Pretty sad to have it collect dust but this change was bad enough that I’d rather just give it up altogether.
paranorman··on Cyberpunk 2077 runs on Linux through the Proton compatibility layer
Why are you shocked? Video games are an awesome way to unwind and get lost in other worlds. They can appeal to folks of all ages and backgrounds.
paranorman··on Penetration testing and low-cost freelancing
Thank you for this, needed a chuckle this morning.
paranorman··on Apple's apps bypass firewalls like LittleSnitch and LuLu on macOS Big Sur
That’s annoying yet pretty predictable, at least we’ve still got https://pi-hole.net/ as an option until DNS encryption becomes widespread :/
paranorman··on HN Replies – Get notified when someone replies to you
I love it, thanks!
paranorman··on Oculus Quest 2 Launch
“ POWERED BY FACEBOOK

Quest 2 requires your Facebook account to login, making it easy to meet up with friends in VR and discover communities around the world. You can explore as yourself or pick a new name by creating a unique VR profile.”

That’s too bad, device looks cool but this is a dealbreaker for me.

paranorman··on Plan Your Route Privately: DuckDuckGo Now Has Driving and Walking Directions
I’ll echo this, sharing your profit model here is the only reason I’m paying any attention to GraphHopper (awesome name btw)

Thank you very much for doing that.

paranorman··on Intermittent fasting doesn’t help you lose weight, UCSF study suggests
Anecdote, I’m down to 190lbs from nearly 230 about 4 months ago and IF has been an amazing tool to aid me in reduced caloric intake.

Honestly I think just having a routine was a big help but eliminating the time (after 8PM for me) that I’d most frequently snack on junk food made a huge difference.

For anyone looking for an iOS app to help track, fast habit is what I use and gladly paid the one time upgrade price. It has a few bugs related to adjusting inputs that annoy me but overall the app does help. In my case I think the biggest benefit to tracking the cycles is the constant commitments involved in “checking in”.

YMMV but for me, having a routine and making commitments were big factors in getting me to stick to the plan. I still eat some junk food to stay sane (took my family out for ice cream just last weekend) but generally I find it easier to pass on unhealthy food when I’m able to understand the disruption it can have on the progress I’m already enjoying.

TLDR: it works for me and feels sustainable, if you’ve struggled with weight loss then I’d suggest at least trying a few weeks.

paranorman··on Ask HN: How can a hacker buy 25,000 IP addresses?
Botnets have no problem existing across many regions, this sounds like the most plausible scenario imho.
paranorman··on Show HN: Strongweek, an iOS app focused on weeks months and years, not due dates
One quick follow up after trying this a bit, is there an option to prioritize a given task within a “slot”?

Sometimes I think of things to do that should really be done before a few other items in the same day

paranorman··on Show HN: Strongweek, an iOS app focused on weeks months and years, not due dates
Yeah this is also something I’d like to see
paranorman··on Show HN: Strongweek, an iOS app focused on weeks months and years, not due dates
This looks pretty good and I'll give it a shot, I've been fairly keen on disabling notifications in general so the lack of them here is more of a selling point because I don't feel like I'm handicapping myself.
paranorman··on Leak reveals $2T of possibly corrupt US financial activity
Do the accounts posting this information look suspicious? I’m not doubting your claim at all, merely curious about the prevalence of astroturfing on HN.
paranorman··on [dead]
“I also looked into sentry.io which is one of the best headless CMS out there but the pricing plans were very much beyond what I can afford.”

Am I missing a joke here?

paranorman··on Google has removed the option to disable autoplay from Mobile Chrome
If only there were some way to penalize bloated websites exhibiting anti-user behavior. /s
paranorman··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
My thoughts exactly!
paranorman··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply. I'll add this to my pihole config.

Are these requests sent to a separate domain? I may have missed it in the article but it’d be great to know whether we could null route these without disrupting functionality.
