patch_cable··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
I worked with several people at Amazon that were on a PIP and were able to move past it. (They were also people that were both talented enough to be successful in their roles, but needed a nudge because they were not meeting expectations at the time.)

I think we generally do not hear about the cases where a PIP was used and the employee was genuinely not meeting expectations, or when a PIP was used and the employee course corrected and went on to have a successful career.

patch_cable··on Ask HN: Recommended Domain Registrars?
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/

Just works. Dead simple. No frills. Feels like something from the early 90s. I've been using it for DNS for the last 10 years with multiple domains and no issues.

I think it is required to name the bucket after the domain name if you want to use it to host static web content: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/websit...

Having read numerous translations, that sounds perfectly comprehensible to me.

That’s not what the cultural revolution was.

The cultural revolution took place well after the CCP took over.

patch_cable··on Ask HN: What do you intend to do about Apple's invasion of your privacy?
Nothing. It doesn't rank high in my list of things I am concerned about. It would be nice if there were other options to consider besides Android, as I don't really care it as an ecosystem.
patch_cable··on Tesla Autopilot thinks the moon is a yellow traffic light
I have one eye and have no problem not making these kinds of mistakes.
patch_cable··on Amazon tells bosses to conceal when employees are on performance management plan
There are teams building cool things, used by large customers, where you're paid decently.

It's not really all that dystopian.

patch_cable··on Amazon tells bosses to conceal when employees are on performance management plan
> “Should I tell an employee that I entered them into Focus?” the question reads. The response: “Do not discuss Focus with employees. Instead, tell the employee that their performance is not meeting expectations, the specific areas where they need to improve, and offer feedback and support to help them improve.”

> “If the employee directly asks, ‘Am I in Focus?’ you should answer honestly,” the response continues. “However, remind the employee that the use of a specific product should not be their take-away from the conversation, as there are important performance gaps they must address.”

That doesn't sound like mandated secrecy. That sounds like they think the employee shouldn't care what the specific product is called.

patch_cable··on Apple's “iCloud Private Relay” broke risk based authentication
The difference between Apple and other anonymizing proxy/VPN services will be the size of the user base.

Websites will have to choose if they're willing to provide a worse UX to Apple customers.

patch_cable··on The clockwork universe: is free will an illusion?
> If things are deterministic then the apparent arising of the universe would be undue.

Why is that?

> There was your will to post your comment, did you do that without consideration?

Consideration can be deterministic

> Free will lives on a spectrum of total freedom to total bondage, and varies by context and situation.

I think our definition of it varies.

> Total freedom is the goal of the spiritual path. Of course, it's easier to say that there is no freedom and therefore continue in our habituated ways without challenging the notion that maybe we are not entirely free.

The decision to challenge can also be deterministic and does not require free will.

> Knowing that freedom is possible…

Ditto.

patch_cable··on AWS Cognito is having issues and health dashboards are still green
Echoing what Aperocky said, I worked for Amazon for about 10 years, across a number of different teams. Amazon has its share of problems, but assigning blame for outages was not one of them.

During my 10 years, I had multiple opportunities to break and then fix things. The breaking was always looked at as "these things happen" while the fixing was always commended.

patch_cable··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
No matter how we live our lives, we're ultimately limited in how much we will experience by our natural life spans.

I see every interaction with someone else as an opportunity to peer into another life. A life I didn't live. A path I didn't take. Even if that path feels to you completely pedestrian, there is still a whole life there that you didn't live.

Even if they haven't examined or reflected on their life, you can (with respect, and perhaps best silently to yourself :-) ).

I think that is mitigated by allowing the key to be rotated freely. The shortcomings over the token based approach are outweighed by being more practical to implement. If the issuing of a new key was an annual process, or even tied to something like drivers license/state id renewal, it would still be worlds better than what we have today.
