patchtopic··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
this garbage is getting really tedious and repetitive.

it's as bad as the "cryptobros" stuff

patchtopic··on Google exec fired after female boss groped him at drunken bash, suit says
Rupert Murdoch rag is not a reliable or credible news source. If this story is importable it deserves to be cited from a source that people will respect.

patchtopic··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
so apple also expect 30% from everything transacted on every banking app?
patchtopic··on People Staring at Computers (2021)
not quite.
patchtopic··on Managing and using ONVIF IP cameras with Linux
I have been setting up a low cost home IP camera solution recently as well. I have also found like others mention, although some of the hardware is OK, on the software side all IP cameras that I have looked at are garbage. hacky linux firmware, needing apps and cloud accounts to config, etc. I also found zoneminder and shinobi not that great either, I've ended up with a "simpler" setup using the basic "motion" Linux motion detect program, and using Jellyfin to view the video files created.

So far the "least worst" of the low cost IP cameras I have tried have been TPLINK TAPO.. once they are configured for onvif and IP set by tying to mac address, they can be blocked from the internet access at the firewall and work fine standalone. The only non-TPLINK app I have found that can work with the PTZ mode of the TAPO C210 is the proprietry ONVIER android app.

patchtopic··on I Turned My Home into a Fortress of Surveillance
I have recently gone down this path and the observation of the animal life of all kinds moving around the area has been a pleasant unintended side effect as well.
patchtopic··on Microblog.pub – A self-hosted, single-user, ActivityPub powered microblog
I was just trying to "follow" from a mastodon instance and nothing seems to happen.. though I'm not exactly sure what should happen.

patchtopic··on The Koh-i-Noor diamond, and why the British won’t give it back (2017)

what about returning the Anglo Saxon Kingdom stolen by violence in 1066 and returning to Normandy and the Channel Islands while they are at it?
patchtopic··on Uber’s Still Not Profitable
his strategy is to maintain a few "core" blogs that are completely under his control, but cross-post across lots of other sites that might have greater reach, but where he has less control.. so it's more a mirror than a blog.

I think the source post for this is at https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/05/a-lousy-taxi#a-giant-aste...

patchtopic··on MS Teams Linux client is being retired. To be replaced by a progressive web app
will it be able to show more than 4 others in a video chat at once? which seems to be another strange limitation of the Linux "teams" client.
patchtopic··on Robert's Rules of Order (1876)
how is this pronounced? I once mentioned this in a meeting and got pronunciation nitpicked for allegedly not saying it correctly - but according to the Oxford dictionary it is pronounced the "obvious" way that I pronounced it: https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/englis...

but the smug pronunciation nitpicker insisted "Robert" was pronounced the French way, i.e. https://www.howtopronounce.com/french/robert

patchtopic··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
I dug into the archives, every attempt to discuss or resolve the issue got shut down with the boilerplate text of:

=============================

Greetings for the day!

I have received an update from Account Research Team: As part of our strong commitment to the protection of our customers and our interest in preserving the quality and integrity of the Azure Marketplace, we perform supplementary reviews of accounts which may exhibit irregular or suspicious activity. Your account was selected for one of these reviews and after careful consideration, this account will remain closed.

Please understand that we keep security checks like these in place in order to protect the quality and integrity of the Azure Marketplace

=============================================================

The ridiculous thing.. my employer makes huge use of Office365? We signed up for Azure via a slightly different path with no issues.. but I know this could be pure chance it just happens to work as the service could be teetering on a precipice of arbitrary policy application and the rug could be pulled from under it any second with the same infuratingly cheery account deletion..

patchtopic··on Ridiculous vulnerability disclosure process with CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor

patchtopic··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
the small azure project that got canned by Azure I was working on, credit card was the only way to pay, and Azure suspended my employers Azure account with no explanation why (though it appears in hindsight to be credit card related), but they refused to explain why. this victim blaming gaslighting is ridiculous.
patchtopic··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
after Azure sunk my employers project with no recourse or discussion allowed, I always advise everyone I meet to run far away from Azure if they value a reliable service.
patchtopic··on Workplace surveillance is coming for you
I like the design but it's a bit difficult to link to I find. One of my favourite web sites with a lot of well thought out content.
patchtopic··on Workplace surveillance is coming for you
nothing tin foil about, these are all serious real world issues that have been documented and this is a good roundup of them.

If the issues are tin-foil, please point us at the articles that debunk the issues described..

patchtopic··on Asus Zenfone 9
I have an ASUS zenfone "max pro m2" I got for my wife.

The stock android it came with had some annoying rough edges compared to a google pixel. This is in terms of the audio levels for apps and notifications, basic user level experience stuff, not advanced nerd stuff.

She moved to a google pixel and was much happier. I installed LineageOS on the ASUS and it's been great with this "upgrade"

I'm hoping they put more effort into refining the OS on this phone.

patchtopic··on Why is it so hard to give Google money?
I had extremely similar kafkaesque experience having my organisations MS-Azure account constantly suspended with no explanation or recourse. It was also "apparently" related to the details of the credit card used to pay for the account, but Microsofts absolute refusal to explain did them no favours.
patchtopic··on Publii: Open-source local WYSIWYG static site CMS
I've been using this for a while, not perfect but pretty good. I'm enjoying not having to deal with security updates for my simple single user CMS. While being able to quickly and easily add posts and articles without messing about too much with web dev administrivia.

patchtopic··on My Poor Experience With Azure (or why I'm sticking with AWS)
I also have had extremely poor experiences with Azure, and recommend anyone who needs reliable infrastructure to avoid this POS.

I was called back to work (online in my hotel room) from a holiday on the beach in Thailand, by an apparently intractable Azure problem.

Expecting some technical subtlety, it turns out it was Azure cancelling my employers account and refusing to explain why, with no appeal or recall. Then the "support staff" issuing this decree cheerfully signing off with a Have A Nice Day style boilerplate, after destroying my organisations PowerBI project and refusing to explain why.

Screw you microsoft, avoid this garbage like the plague.

I bet the stress and time lost from crap like this is never accounted for in Microsofts idiotic TCO propaganda crap
