patchtopic··on A QUARTER of Americans say they are ready to take up arms against the government
however, a quarter of Americans could be full of shit bigmouths
patchtopic··on Cancer cells wake up when people sleep

patchtopic··on Barriers to Business – How cities can pave a path to entrepreneurship
I bet there was a fraction of this wasteful paperwork for that place in Thailand where I got laid up with food poisoning for weeks.
patchtopic··on How James Patterson became the world’s best-selling author
I read lots of (genre) fiction books but never heard of this guy before today, or any of his books.
patchtopic··on Record labels dig their own grave, and the shovel is called TikTok
there is an alternative, speaking as someone who purchases piles of music in lossless format from bandcamp and similar sites, from musicians who could not five a f*ck about tiktok or other lame surveillance capitalism platforms.
patchtopic··on Covid patients pushed medical extremes in life support breakthrough
old Melbourne saying: "Is it the truth, or did you read it in the Herald Sun?"..

like any Murdoch rag it sometimes might put out a news article to keep up appearances, but there is usually a better source..

patchtopic··on Covid Influencers: Who Is Risa Hoshino?
the source blog looks even sketchier than Risa Hoshino
patchtopic··on You can now integrate Google Search on your website
a long time ago an organisation I worked for purchased a google search appliance (and actual bit of rack hardware) and I was tasked with setting it up. the inherit limits in this bit of junk made it almost useless, I expended a lot of effort trying to get it to work as it should. Part of it was that it was purchased without considering these limitations vs the orgs use case.
patchtopic··on On Being Disappeared
you should compare notes with Anna Politkovskaya about this
patchtopic··on Epic Games acquires Bandcamp
so when/if bandcamp jumps the shark, hopefully there will be a similar music site to jump to.
patchtopic··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
this is most unfortunate, but not having alternate copies outside of a capricious, free service like youtube was the first mistake.
patchtopic··on Australian-developed secure microkernel takes to the skies
how does the "provably secure" operating system co-exist in a legislative environment in Australia where software products are required to have govt (and therefore anyone) accessible backdoors?
patchtopic··on Wire is now on F-Droid
from the wire.com pricing page, it costs $$$ for more than 5 users, I assume that means connecting to their servers.

Does that mean if a group of friends used the wire service for IM they have to pay to join a group chat of more than 5 users?

It does mention the server can be self hosted - If self hosted is it free from all licencing costs?

patchtopic··on Incorrectly deleted from Facebook? Getting back on might take connections
I know just getting rid of facebook doesn't solve this issue as youtube, etc also suffer from it - but it is a good start.
patchtopic··on Report on Stablecoins [pdf]
This has occasionally been mentioned elsewhere about some of the sketchier exchanges. I have never seen it mentioned with any of the exchanges I use - is there any non-anecdotal confirmation of this phenomena?
patchtopic··on Why the ‘Big Short’ Guys Think Bitcoin Is a Bubble
I use it a bit for buying stuff (hosting, VPNs, domains, SSL certs and other stuff when I can).. but litecoin is actually more useful for this as less volatile, faster transactions and lower fees.
patchtopic··on Self-hosted enterprise VPN server built using the OpenVPN protocol
we moved from OpenVPN AS to PRITUNL and so far it has been good.

It has a few annoying quirks, but generally happy with it. Stability and reliability very good so far.

The documentation is frustratingly terse in places and does not clearly state which features are available in which license tiers.

The management interface being on the same port as the interface you use to onboard new users is annoying, especially when there is no 2FA available for the admin user unless you are on the most expensive plan, when security should be baked in from the start for even entry level use.

but otherwise pretty good.

patchtopic··on Fail2ban – Remote Code Execution
AFAIK the email alert feature is not enabled by default in fail2ban.

Is there any chance a default config of fail2ban in a typical Linux distribution would be vulnerable to this?

patchtopic··on Database containing personal info of 106M visitors to Thailand exposed online
thanks for nothing incompetent Thai gov!

- someone who has been to Thailand frequently pre covid.

patchtopic··on Tell HN: YouTube has a spam problem, and it's getting worse
hunt for any youtube cryptocurrency content and instantly get your youtube feed filled with a torrent of garbage containing thumbnails of graphs and amazed facial expressions..
patchtopic··on Bitcoin’s first day as El Salvador’s legal tender
"crash" not very accurate choice of words... exchange rate dip maybe better?
patchtopic··on BookWyrm is a federated Goodreads replacement
the signup confirmation email for BooKWyrm seems to have stopped working.
patchtopic··on Australian Police get online account takeover, data disruption powers
I am disgusted by the mostly apathetic response in Australia to this terrible legislation.
patchtopic··on ‘Extraordinary’ hacking powers pass Australian Parliament
As an Australian I am disgusted by these clowns who are in government.
patchtopic··on 286 vs. 386SX
as an unemployed computer science graduate when this came out this CPU was a big deal to me. I had just finished a subject on MINIX and had read Linus original Linux post, and getting a cheap 386sx mobo allowed me to get into Linux for relatively low cost at the time by upgrading my 286.
patchtopic··on India is leading IPv6 migration with 61.67% adoption

patchtopic··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
perhaps because it is the name of the style of Thai chili sauce he is making, named after the Thai town.
patchtopic··on Finding the Bottom Turtle
the first Linux was written on Minix and used the Minix filesystem and GCC that was available on minix. So built on an established software stack and kernel.
