patrickod··on Let’s Encrypt client will transition to a new name and a new home at EFF
How would one move beyond the reach of NSLs?
patrickod··on GPL enforcement is a social good
If you find yourself with the opportunity to see Bradley Kuhn speak I'd highly recommend it. I met Bradley at the Linux Fest North West event this year in April and it was one of my favourite and most formative moments of the year. I'm proud to be a financial supporter of the Conservancy with all the work that they do to protect and promote Free Software.
patrickod··on What happened when we got subpoenaed over our Tor exit node
Noisetor (sub-project of the Noisebridge hackerspace in SF) received an identical subpoena, and had the same results. We contacted our legal counsel and subsequently the FBI to explain the whole "we can't provide this information because tor" at which point they dropped our requirement to testify.
patrickod··on Cory Doctorow Rejoins EFF to Eradicate DRM Everywhere
I'd recommend Cory's latest book: "Information doesn't want to be free" where he addresses the problems presented by DRM and other copyright issues. It's a short read but hugely valuable for folks creating digital content. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R4ZJTMO?btkr=1
patrickod··on Secure Secure Shell
djb gave a good overview of general ECC curves as part of his and Tanja's talk at 31C3: http://media.ccc.de/browse/congress/2014/31c3_-_6369_-_en_-_... I'd highly recommend watching it, it was very educational.
patrickod··on WRTnode Opened for $25
Scrolling on this site w/ a mac is incredibly frustrating. It keeps resetting to the top of the page.
patrickod··on HOPE X Streaming Live
Is anyone else having issues with this stopping every 30 seconds or so? I can't get a continual stream going at all w/ VLC. The site flash players load nothing for me either.
patrickod··on The New TextSecure: Privacy Beyond SMS
I feel the same about Google Voice at the moment. It's killer feature for me right now is the ability to text and call people from my Google Voice account from OS X. I use GrowlVoice[1] extensively. It's easily one of my favourite menubar applications.

If TextSecure could replace this functionality it'd cause me to seriously reconsider GV

patrickod··on CircleCI raises $6m Series A
Super excited to see this news and what the CircleCI team have planned. Can't overstate how much I love CircleCI or how much easier it makes my life. Definitely one of the best services I use day to day.

Congrats to the team! It's well deserved.

patrickod··on iOS holding my phone number hostage = the worst bug I’ve ever experienced
This is worrying as my Mum's iPhone just bit the dust and we replaced it with an Android phone. I'm hoping that she doesn't experience the same issues with her friends and family (many of whom use iPhones).
patrickod··on We're Shutting Down and I'm Scared
Take some time to decompress. The winding down period is stressful and it seems you're already feeling the effects.

As many have mentioned you've only enriched your resume with this experience. Use it to find yourself work, your incubator network should be full of people looking to hire.

I've gone through this and it's stressful as all hell but you'll make it through. With your nose right up against it the problems seem much more formidable than they are in reality. Employees come first in terms of settling debts. Deal with vendors after that.

One point I'd really stress is that you should talk to people about it. Feel free to reach out (p@trickod.com)

patrickod··on The microhydro plant
You could also sell back to the grid. I've known people to do this if they live near streams / rivers in WA
patrickod··on Flamingo for Mac: A Modern Messaging App
Installed it and while it looks very nice it's been beachballing almost constantly with only 2 accounts connected (facebook and hangout)

Search is very slow and causes ~500ms input lag.

Needs a lot of polish still.

patrickod··on The genius and folly of MongoDB
I'm unsure why you say there are no other alternatives. Surely the choice of database should preference your data and what you want to do with it over the language you'll use? There are node libraries for any database I've ever wanted to use (SQL and NoSQL alike)
patrickod··on Hosted server status pages for startups
That domain isn't active and is in the process of being auctioned. Typo perhaps?
patrickod··on The Data Behind H-1B Visas
Unsurprising to find that such a small percentage of applications were for musicians / singers. Is that not what the artist category in the O visa was designed for?

patrickod··on Google Unveils The New Nexus 7 Android Tablet
I've loved using my Nexus 7 for the last year. Great device at a brilliant price point. Really looking forward to using 4.3 on this too.
patrickod··on $99 ARM-based PC runs either Ubuntu or Android
I was thinking the same thing. I'm guessing though that it wouldn't be too hard to put OpenWRT on the box?
patrickod··on [dead]
NPR ran a story about 3-4 months ago where they interviewed this teenager in Florida while recounting the story. I couldn't believe my ears.

It sounded like textbook entrapment. Are the police in these areas so desperate for drug-related arrests that they'd use tactics like this? IIRC the case ended up being her word against his on the key points of his conviction. That too rubbed me entirely the wrong way. To first lure him in and then use only one person's testimony to clinch the conviction sounds totally unjust.

patrickod··on Cameras Catch Mystery Break-In at Whistleblower’s Law Firm
Not at all unlikely since the FBI has been in the practice of using surreptitious entry since at least the 1970 at the behest of the NSA and the CIA in a bid to recover cryptographic keys and other information instead of having to brute force them. Why spend all that money on computation when you can just break into someone's Embassy instead and steal it?

James Bamford discusses this at length in The Puzzle Palace - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Puzzle_Palace

patrickod··on Send money with Gmail
I managed to open accounts with Chase while my SSN application was still pending / didn't have the paperwork in hand yet. They chased me up afterwards for it though and have sent me paperwork repeatedly asking for the information (SSN, reason for being in the US etc) in relation to any interest paid on accounts.

Is it possible to hold an account without any sort of tax ID number (ITIN or SSN) Surely one of them is required?

patrickod··on Show HN: Automatic weekly meal planner, also plans your leftovers
I've been mulling over this idea for quite a while after moving into a place on my own and wanting to eat healthier. Really excited to start using it. Impressive execution. Best of luck with this! I'm definitely rooting for its success
patrickod··on An adaptive prompt for Bash and Zsh
Interesting. I installed 5.0.2, removed anything that would be interfering with my .zshrc and still have the same problems.
patrickod··on An adaptive prompt for Bash and Zsh
what version of ZSH are you using? I'm having issues installing this on Ubuntu where the metadata commands aren't executing and are instead printed as

  $vcs_info_msg_0_`git_dirty` $username `cmd_exec_time`

patrickod··on How `curl -L cueup.com/jobs` works
Is anyone else unable to see this due to tech.cueup.com not resolving?
patrickod··on MongoHQ releases SSD powered databases, autoscaling beta
We've used MongoHQ extensively for the last 2 years and have always found them to be excellent. The team is both incredibly dedicated and knowledgable. They are the experts in anything MongoDB related. If you're thinking of using MongoDB you should use them. No questions asked
patrickod··on More Than Half a Million Raspberry Pis Sold
I ordered mine through element14 and got it two weeks later around July this summer.
patrickod··on Another awesome US immigration experience
From my (albeit limited) observations I thought they never turned away citizens but obviously I was wrong. Getting appointments with the US embassy can sometimes be a challenging ordeal. They do however make allowances for emergency appointments which can be very helpful at times.
patrickod··on Another awesome US immigration experience
My experience with US embassies (both the one in Brussels and Dublin) has never seen them refuse entry to a US citizen and tell them to re-schedule. They usually have separate entrances as well with different procedures.
