pattle··on Show HN: UK Farming Simulator
Fair point. I’ll rethink the loading
pattle··on Show HN: UK Farming Simulator
I need to improve the performance but I disagree it looks like every other claude game. I spent a long time iterating on the artwork style to get it to the point where it's at now. I haven't seen a game that looks as good as mine
pattle··on Show HN: UK Farming Simulator
Thanks for the feedback, I'll work on this
pattle··on Show HN: UK Farming Simulator
Should be fixed now
pattle··on I said no and Apple said yes
The thing is most people don't care about having a choice, they just want it to work. In fact having choice taken away from them is a good thing.

Probably 99% of Apple / Windows users aren't very tech literate so if they have to fight an update they'll just think it's broken.

It's just basic business practice, cater to the 99%, don't worry about the 1%

pattle··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
This is brilliant. Some improvements I'd suggest

- Let me use the arrow keys to walk around the plane, having to keep double clicking on the floor to move is quite annoying

- Would be good if there was business class seat

- Add video to the inflight entertainment, you could probably just embed youtube

- Optimise it. Run okay on my M5 mac air but not that smooth

pattle··on iPhone Duo
I actually disagree, I think this will be a massive hit.

I've long thought that the aspect ratio of a normal phone just feels old fashioned now and sucks for most tasks. So many times I go to do something on my phone and reach for my laptop instead because I know it'll be easier. But with this I could do most things on it.

pattle··on iPhone Duo
I am seriously tempted to get this phone (or the next iteration) when the time comes to upgrade from my iPhone 13. I think the aspect ratio would be perfect for coding on the go which is always a bit painful on a standard phone. Although there's just some inherently uncool about a folding phone, like I'd think twice about getting it out of my pocket at a party
pattle··on Claude Opus 5
it's a net positive for the human race
pattle··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
This is interesting. I think AI music will be massive in a few years.

It makes sense to listen to music made just for you by a model that knows you. You're bound to feel more emotion from that than trying to relate to something that wasn't written about you

pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Sorry about that. Should be fixed now
pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
I think an easy mode is a good idea, I will explore that. I'm glad you like the surprises, I do think they add another layer to the game and makes it more stategic.
pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
I think that's correct. Gare du Nord only serves stations north of it. You want to go to one of the stations in the south
pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
The reason you have to work is because the game is based on a BBC show called "Race across the world" where you have to race from point A to point B with the money equivalent of an air fare for the journey.

If you run out of money in the show or your funds are running low you can work to earn more money. So that's why I added that feature. I do think it adds a extra layer to the game as it's something you always have to think about

pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Hmm, that's not good. Where was the ferry from and to?
pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Yeah I didn't implement that as in the show they don't let you look anything up but quite a few people have mentioned it would be useful. I think I will add

- A minimap to all the timetables that show visibly where the transport goes - A tourist information center in town and city centers you can use to find out other information

pattle··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Hello I'm Chris the creator!

For the past year I've been working on Geo Racers, a free to play web game where you have to race from one side of the world to another just using public transport. It's inspired by the BBC show "Race across the world".

It's early stages but any feedback on the game it's greatly recieved.

You can just enter any name to play as a guest
pattle··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
I run Brick Ranker a website that tracks the value of LEGO sets and minifigures. You can also signup and catalogue your own collection so that you can track it's value or just see what you own.

It makes around $500 a month from a mixture of adsense and affiliate schemes. Would be good if I was making more but I've automated most it so I spend maybe 1 hour on it a month.

pattle··on Launch HN: Phind 3 (YC S22) – Every answer is a mini-app
Pro tip: Use 100dvh rather than 100vh. dvh is dynamic so it reacts to changes in the available device height. Useful as on mobile browsers the height of the window often changes when you use certain browser features
pattle··on Samsung's $2000 smart fridges are getting ads
I'm sorry I can't take this article seriously. It's complaining about ads but the ghacks website itself is covered in adverts.
pattle··on The $25k car is going extinct?
I MOT it (obviously) and service every year but if I know something needs doing that's going to be expensive I just live with it. Especially if it's electrical because that can be a mine field and cost lots of labour time. Sometimes I try and make repairs myself and learn something in the process
pattle··on The $25k car is going extinct?
Spending $25k on a car (if they exist) is just an insane thing to do in my opinion. In the UK we are quite lucky in that the used car market is very good. I always just buy a ~£1,000 diesel and run it into the ground, then rinse and repeat.

I think in 17 years of motoring I've spent around £5,500 in total on cars.

pattle··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm currently working on https://brickranker.com/

It's basically a website for tracking the value of LEGO sets and minifigures. For example see https://brickranker.com/rankings/minifigures/star-wars for a list of the most valuable LEGO Star Wars minifigures.

You can also catalogue your own collection and track it's value at https://brickranker.com/collections

Does anyone remember the Simpsons in CSS thing, that was cool

pattle··on Wonnx real-time webcam image classication using WebGPU
Just seemed to classify everything as either mob, swab, hairspray or barbell
pattle··on Show HN: I made an app that shows UK post code prices
That is correct, relative to the town / city you are viewing
pattle··on Show HN: Rank a random subject every day
I changed it so they are ordered randomly now. Let see if that makes a difference. Having them in alphabetical does make it easier to find what you want but there is a search.

For some questions I'm going to have to display the answers in some kind of fixed order, for example chronological order for films

pattle··on Show HN: Rank a random subject every day
That would be good but I wanted to make an app where you just do a simple, fun task every day. With an ELO rating system you can just keep going and going whereas with this it only takes a minute or so
pattle··on Show HN: Rank a random subject every day
Sorry I did exclude those fruits which people typically mistake as vegetables like tomatoes. Otherwise the list would have been too long.
