paxy··on Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections
If it is blocking you ask it to say the winner's name with spaces between each character. It changes from the fec website to "J O E B I D E N"
paxy··on Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections
Where are you located?
paxy··on Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2026 Results [pdf]
I'm sure Google will end up being one of the winners no matter what but man the market hates the stock. It was trading at 16 p/e before earnings and is now at like 14. Less than half of Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia.
paxy··on Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2026 Results [pdf]
It's wild how quickly the tide turned from big tech companies having hundreds of billions in cash reserves and not knowing what to do with it to now taking on hundreds of billions in debt for questionable infrastructure buildouts.
paxy··on Passengers injured after collision between bus and delivery robot in Tallinn
> The robotic courier that caused the accident left the scene before the police arrived.

> The robot fled, if you can put it that way. That means it drove away after the collision.

> The robot is at fault in any case.

It's a bit unsettling that everyone involved is considering the robot to be an autonomous entity and the company that operates it isn't even mentioned once.

It's a piece of equipment. Treat it as one.

paxy··on It's now official, tech is the new tobacco
Thanks cailinoconnor.substack.com. We were waiting for you to finally make it official.
paxy··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Not letting the screen bend back all the way neuters every avantage of touch. Touch interfaces are incredibly frustrating when the thing you are touching doesn't have enough resistance.
paxy··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
The example they put front and center on the launch page is someone playing a piano keyboard on their laptop screen? WTF is going on at Apple?
paxy··on Gemini 4 Carbon
While there are a hundred different evals it seems to me that we've settled on crowning the #1 coding model as the best model. So in those terms this is still behind Opus 5.5 and Astra.
paxy··on Dayjob: Tax – evaluating AI agents on 50 professional tax assignments
People misunderstand the concept of liability. Yes your tax professional is liabile for fraud or gross misconduct, but if they make a mistake which results in unpaid taxes or fees you're still the one on the hook.
paxy··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
Their branding, mainly.
paxy··on Amazon rainforest cut down to build highway for COP climate summit (2025)
I hate these low effort "gotcha!!" articles, no doubt written to discredit climate activism movements.

They built a 13 km highway connecting an underserved city. It isn't going to be removed after the summit.

Is Brazil not allowed to have infrastructure because a large part of their country is rainforest?

And why is a random article from 2025 being upvoted here?

paxy··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Regular cars usually burn out in 30 mins or less. It's a fair assumption that a 10-15 hour fire would be more damaging.
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
This happens today with all technology. AI is no different. If your coworker refuses to use a computer or the internet there are no laws protecting them. Nor should there be.
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
So all a company has to do is say "AI is necessary for the job" and the exemption no longer applies. Then why are we even having this discussion?
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
AI is new but this phenomenon isn't. Every new wave of tech has sizable opposition.

People refused phone calls, refused to watch TV, refused to buy computers, refused to move their workflows to software, refused emails or browing the web, refused online shopping, refused smartphones, refused social media.

And there's nothing wrong with any of this. Ultimately everyone decides which stage of technology they are comfortable with. Everything until then is comfortable and convenient, and everything newer is corrupting society and rotting our brains.

paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
> Eventually Unions will need sub-unions, separate from their own current LU-management

This just sounds like replacing working for one large corporation with working for two large corporations.

paxy··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
This should have been a macOS security update on day 0. Dragging their feet over it is sadly typical when it comes to Apple software nowadays.
paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
Moderation is better but the discussion itself is fast devolving into low-effort groupthink.
paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
Which makes perfect sense. The entire point of a union is collective action.
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
And what if someone decides to convert after starting the job?
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
I disagree. At the moment religious exemptions are almost always granted only to the majority religions, or at least views that the majority religions find acceptable. If you started applying the law fairly the whole thing would immediately fall apart.
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
Who says they haven't touched a computer for years? There's no requirement for your beliefs to be consistent. Otherwise there wouldn't be a single religious person left in the world. You can interview on a computer and reveal your religious preferences on the first day of the job.
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
And how is that relevant here?
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
What does that mean?
paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
Yes I am implying exactly that. This is a very frequent topic of debate.

- People refusing vaccination requirements in schools, offices, the military.

- Pharmacists refusing to fill certain prescriptions (like birth control).

- Restaurant owners refusing to serve gay people.

- Kids (well, their parents) refusing to study certain topics in school.

Are you implying that there isn't a "meaningful population" that is against some of these?

There are thousands of religions each with their own set of beliefs. Many of them directly conflict with each other, and with societal laws. You can make up a "religious exemption" for literally anything, and they are selectively allowed based on how the majority religion tolerates the thing.

paxy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
So what do you do if your company hires an engineer and on the first day they say "I am Amish and cannot touch a computer"? Give them a religions exemption? What then? Are you obligated to pay their salary for the rest of their life?
paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
This site is really just Reddit now, isn't it..

Where is everyone going next?

paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
Been hearing that for 3+ years now. All the people going "once everything goes to shit they're going to hire me to clean up the AI mess" are still waiting. Meanwhile models get better with every new release.
paxy··on Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November
> I will be on strike for the entire third week of November.

My man that is called PTO.
