pcopley··on I'm doing 90% maintenance and 10% development, is this normal?
Yes, but a junior developer's role in any company regardless of size is most definitely not to come in and say how they could do it better and the company should change their workflow.
pcopley··on The Silencing of Maya
Stop upvoting this crap, it was submitted YESTERDAY for crying out loud.
pcopley··on Newegg: No, We'll Totally Take Returns After You Install Linux
Doing the wrong thing (completely ignoring Norma) < doing the right thing for the wrong reason (RMA because of the bad publicity) < doing the right thing for the right reason (RMA because someone at NE screwed up) < doing the right thing in the first place (RMA when it was originally asked for)

Clearly Newegg is in one of the middle categories. Personally, I think as long as customers are taken care of it doesn't so much matter what the decision making behind it is.

pcopley··on The crowdfunding bubble of 2013
I get the impression you turn everything into a political tirade.
pcopley··on How I manage 40 people remotely
What type of diversity are you referring to? Is this really something that factors into a decision about where to live?

I would think saying "I want to live somewhere where everybody is different than me" is almost as bad as saying "I want to live somewhere where everybody is the same as me"

pcopley··on How I manage 40 people remotely
I'm assuming you're in the US, and this is not at all what the ACA does (which is the closest approximation to a US version of NHS).
pcopley··on Why Do Some Programming Languages Live and Others Die?
That author needs to either learn English or blog in his native language. It was downright painful to read.
pcopley··on Long Exposure Photographs Shot from Orbit
Easily one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
pcopley··on Git, Cloud, Node, Metro, is Microsoft starting to get a little bit cool?
I believe maratd was referring the present and future, whereas you're linking to things than happened well over a decade ago.
pcopley··on Don't Text Me, Bro.
This. 5 years ago it may have been easier, but I don't remember the last time I was even able to connect to a free publicly available wifi signal, whether I did or not.
pcopley··on Don't Text Me, Bro.
If you're going to implicate every major US telecom company in a massive conspiracy to commit a crime, you should probably have a source.

Or not be crazy.

pcopley··on Camera+ turned down acquisition offers and says no to VC money
Can someone with VC experience (on either side of the table) explain what part of an investment goes into the founder's pocket? Does it change with each deal or is there a standard percentage?

Obviously a $10MM investment does not equate to a $10MM deposit in the founder's personal bank account, but at what point is the founder no longer expected to live on Ramen?

pcopley··on Domain Name Analysis
A couple months old, but there's some really interesting data analysis in here.
pcopley··on Study of 49 programmers: static type system had no effect on development time
I'm curious what your Master's is in and what "type" you're surrounded by.
pcopley··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names
Touche, I missed that.
pcopley··on Other Examples of Craigslist Spam Tactics [NSFW]
It's fascinating how much money there is in things that are at best ethically unsound and legally questionable, and at worst completely illegal (no real shocker in the latter, though).
pcopley··on EHarmony confirms password breach
Gotcha. I was blinded by my own secular zealotry!
pcopley··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names
This has been posted a few times and is almost a year old. It is an excellent blog, though. Worth reading the newer entries.
pcopley··on Other Examples of Craigslist Spam Tactics [NSFW]
Ever think about swapping out your own affiliate link for a small percentage of the posts?
pcopley··on EHarmony confirms password breach
Those people aren't typically hackers.
pcopley··on How tiny insects survive the rain
Can you please explain what you're talking about?
pcopley··on You’ll Hate Windows 8
I agree.

I've been using OSX for about 3 years now. I just recently built and set up a PC with Windows 7 in the past 3-4 months. I am in absolutely no hurry to upgrade barring some huge technological innovation, which I have no reason to believe will be coming from Windows 8.

pcopley··on I must be crazy
I was in the same boat as the parent post until your third bullet. That's certainly enough to keep the mortgage paid and food on the table, so I think now is the perfect time to do what you're doing. When the kids go to school and things get more expensive for you it'll be harder and harder to make this decision.

Best to find out now if it's sustainable for you. Good luck.

pcopley··on What Makes Great Programmers Different?
I think most people are more likely to work at a job they dislike and spend their weekends on their own endeavors than the other way around, that's all.
pcopley··on Israel airport security demands access to tourists' private email accounts
Let's stop pretending that the terms "Israeli" and "Jew" are interchangable, because they're not. While it may have at the beginning, I don't think Jewishness or lack thereof has anything to do with the West Bank. At this point it's a dispute over citizenship, property, and human rights.

I say this as an American with no connection to either side.

pcopley··on What Makes Great Programmers Different?
I would hope your identity was more closely linked to friends, family and hobbies than your career, regardless of how much you enjoy what you do.
pcopley··on Legalize Airbnb
This is no different. The onus is on the person renting out their property/room to declare rental income and remit the appropriate taxes.

On a side note, it breaks my heart to read "all this money changing hands without being taxed sure seems weird."

pcopley··on 6.5 Million LinkedIn Password Hashes Leaked
But what about your kar- nevermind.
pcopley··on Ask HN: At what point is it not worth entering a market as a startup?
I am a fan of OSS and wouldn't be particularly worried having my platform be OS, in whole or in part.

I hadn't thought of a premium platform on top of the current OSS solution, that's a really good idea and I will need to look into that a little more. Some elements are MIT, some are Apache 2.0; I haven't seen anything prohibiting commercial use but IANAL.

pcopley··on Groupon now worth less than the $6 billion Google offered.
I believe you meant "would have."
