peetle··on Show HN: Formally verified 3D CSG: Trust 93 lines spec, not 1000 lines AI code
This is a really cool project. Love it. Why not extend to union, difference, and xor? Is that exercise left to the reader or is it not tractable? ;)

I'm also curious if you've consider fuzz testing this system to verify the results.

peetle··on Show HN: LiteRadar – Fast, ad-free, 60fps weather radar
I extended weather history to 1 hour and added forecast for the next hour, too.
peetle··on Show HN: LiteRadar – Fast, ad-free, 60fps weather radar
The data is available and I am considering it. Thanks for suggesting it!

No thanks!
peetle··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
Another way of saying it, if an AI agent doesn't have true risk of oblivion (or mortality in the biological sense), it will not be incentivized to avoid it (or develop the ancillary processes associated with this avoidance ie desire to self-replicate).
peetle··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
An AI agent is not "conscious" without having skin in the game.
peetle··on Nano Banana can be prompt engineered for nuanced AI image generation
In my own experience, nano banana still has the tendency to:

- make massive, seemingly random edits to images - adjust image scale - make very fine grained but pervasive detail changes obvious in an image diff

For instance, I have found that nano-banana will sporadically add a (convincing) fireplace to a room or new garage behind a house. This happens even with explicit "ALL CAPS" instructions not to do so. This happens sporadically, even when the temperature is set to zero, and makes it impossible to build a reliable app.

Has anyone had a better experience?

The right answer for most people is to simply leave and pursue their ideals in a more favorable venue.
peetle··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
The same thing has happened to me with political donations. Every day I receive an email from a different candidate. It is like whack a mole.
peetle··on 85% of People Want Global Ban on Single-Use Plastics
Great graphic on the environmental impacts of different kinds of grocery bags: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/grocery-bag-environmental...

In short, single use plastic bags are very hard to beat.

peetle··on 85% of People Want Global Ban on Single-Use Plastics
Yes, but who wants to pay more for them? It's very hard to beat single use plastic bags for environmental impact: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/grocery-bag-environmental...
peetle··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024)
Higharc | Senior Frontend Engineer, Senior SDET | Full-time | Durham, NC, San Francisco, CA, remote | higharc.com

Higharc has built a cloud platform for homebuilders (build >80% of homes built in the US every year) that massively reduces the burden of producing construction documents, material counts, and sales tools. At the center of the platform is an in-browser CAD system that allows builders to model homes with the information needed to support the complexity of their business. We raised a $53 million series B in 2023.

Technologies: Next.js, TypeScript, React

More details and application here: https://www.higharc.com/company/careers

peetle··on In 2019 US Navy warships were swarmed by UFOs
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that all the data about these "UFO"'s:

1. is conspicuously low quality, grainy 2. presents inconsistent imagery of the phenomenon 3. originates from sensor equipment most laymen are unfamiliar with and thus unable to know if they've been spoofed 4. presented in the context of clickbaity commentary

peetle··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
Interesting, but they commissioned it. :) I'm curious if there are other assessments with different methodologies, different outcomes.

peetle··on Complex text layouts progress report in Godot game engine
This look exciting, but I am obsessed with the lack of subpixel rendering for fonts in godot (imgui, nanovg, etc). The fonts just look crummy to me.

As I understand it, subpixel rendering is a treacherous patent landscape. Is that the reason why it is consistently missing from these tools?

peetle··on In spite of an increase in Internet speed, webpage speeds have not improved
Despite an increase in speed, people insist on adding more to the web.
peetle··on The percentage of Americans who are employed has fallen from 61 to 51
As an 18 year old, I had zero job experience so I could never find a job.

I bought a lawnmower on craigslist and started putting up flyers. This set me back ~$75 at the time. I also did odd job painting and handyman jobs. I found a solid collection of clients fairly quickly and just walked around the neighborhood.

Obviously, police that police police police police, and those that police that group, police police police, police police police.
peetle··on A History of the Sentence "Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo." (1999-2015)
Police is a much better word for this, IMHO. :) To spell it out, it's an adjective (e.g police car) verb (e.g. police the streets) and obviously a noun. Buffalo has never struck me as a very good verb...
peetle··on Filament and WASM: Physically-based rendering for web

peetle··on The $100B per year back pain industry is mostly a hoax
Think of all the physiological responses attributed to nervousness (e.g. before public speaking): muscle tension, raised heart rate, sweating, need to urinate/defecate, insomnia, nausea.

Given that, why are we so convinced that our mind (i.e. our prefrontal cortex, seat of "high level" thinking) _couldn't_ be the cause of persistent inflammatory pain? Do not ideas and stressors persist in our mind, just as pain might?

Sarno's simple thesis is that stress in our daily life could, in fact, be the underlying trigger for inflammatory pain. The mere realization of this, for many people, can resolve chronic pain problems that last years and are resistant to treatments that assume the cause of the issue is structural.

Here's a success story from one of the creators of EtherPad (acquired by Google) on his recovery from wrist pain (diagnosed as RSI) from reading Dr. Sarno's book:

peetle··on Big Picture of Calculus (2010) [video]
I love Gilbert Strang, but _by far_ my favorite book on calculus is "Calculus Made Easy" by Silvanus Thompson. It supplies a very elegant and powerful set of tools to derive many of the "fundamentals" of calculus.
