peter_retief··on The Fall of Scientific American
Good grief, the level of ignorence is astonishing but add that that was in a science journal...
peter_retief··on The Fall of Scientific American
I used to buy a Scientific American as a treat and even subscribed for some time but wow, how bad it has become.

Why oh why destroy something so precious to so many people.

Spewing politcal hate is not the best way to win friends it seems.

peter_retief··on Tiny Little Office
this is really great, just went through the categories and it is really useful to someone who work like me
peter_retief··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
Cloudflare do a great job, I noticed moving from another VM.
peter_retief··on A Modern Web App in C
I never understood why we abandoned cgi apps rather than fixing them.

Not sure why but it probably had something to do with Microsoft and the browser wars.

Is it time to fix web development?

peter_retief··on AI-ready biological data: $1.8B global commitment
We really need to own our own data and allow it to be used for the common good, unfortunatly people just dont get the concept or the value. We are open source and need good open source laws to protect us.
peter_retief··on Sharded, encrypted storage between friends over Yggdrasil
yes and no
peter_retief··on Sharded, encrypted storage between friends over Yggdrasil
that is an issue, your anti challenge is a great idea.
peter_retief··on Sharded, encrypted storage between friends over Yggdrasil
It is an idea at the moment, more aligned to the internet in the early days when there was more trust.

As for your question there are ways to mitigate that type of problem, joining fee maybe?

peter_retief··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
Lisp is a terrible language, for me at least.
peter_retief··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Sure, buildings were demolished, is that unusual in a war zone?
peter_retief··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
I also did not know it was a term..
peter_retief··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
I have been trying to promote open source sw for as long as I can remember but peoplel like my wife who is a social worker says it is too clunky and gets in the way, recently I have been vide coding with apps on Raspberry Pi's and just maybe that gap is slowly starting to close.

I for one am watching this space with a lot of interest.

peter_retief··on Ink and Switch interactive homepage
This is amazing I am so grateful to hear about it.

I gave been going in few similar things on my own with localbox

peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
I use both (also Headscale)
peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
Yet so many developers do not know about it.
peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
I have been using CF tunnels for quite some time, very useful if you want to ingest mail on a local server without a public IP and hosting anything locally.

They are providing this for free up to a point, I wonder if all developers are aware of this amazing offering?

peter_retief··on Save your photos with everyone and everyone with you
apps running on vpn mesh can be really useful
peter_retief··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
It is very hard work and with multilayer boards and surface mount components it is not really a hobby for me anymore, maybe with AI it can be again?
peter_retief··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
True and funny.
peter_retief··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
Bugs days are numbered with AI!
peter_retief··on AI-powered email agent that syncs your emails via IMAP
AI-powered email agent that syncs your emails via IMAP and provides intelligent analysis Interesting to analyse 20+ years of my gmail account. Fork the repo and make it better, this is created with AI
peter_retief··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
good luck, nice idea, agents are fun and a bit scary sometimes!
peter_retief··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
Gambling feeds on human misery, it should never be normalized, they made the right decision.
peter_retief··on Why the future is local app
I am using the older version of raspberry pi 3 B+ to host mail and web services locally behind firewalls. There is a use case here for developing for remote areas that have unreliable internet and power. Still a way to go but there is something in place. This site is a beta running from my lounge at home. https://localboxmail.co.za/software.html
peter_retief··on More Tailscale tricks for your jailbroken Kindle
My son wants to throw it away, I want to at least try and reuse it.

Any suggestions for an ancient Chromebook?

Have one that is managed by a school from 10 years ago and they failed to release the device.

I am a fan of alpine Linux which i think may work well on an old Chromebook.

Any suggestions/links welcome

peter_retief··on Teach yourself programming in ten years (1998)
I have mixed feelings about this, I hate the loss of slow "discovery" and the warm fuzzy feeling when you understand something that used to be Greek to you (unless of course you are Greek) The piles of programming books, sadly many unread but admired on the shelf from afar. Now I create programs in languages I only vaguely understand and run remote servers without even logging in, it feels slightly shameful but then we are all complicit
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Absolutely, I give my agents access to MCP/API and they can check logs and setup checks for potential problems and whatever else
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
It is a really interesting debate, it seems to be a type of abstraction at least, with an interface as a natural language instead of a typed schema.
