peterchon··on Learn Vanilla JavaScript Before JavaScript Frameworks
I agree, but there's also benefits of looking at a quality piece of code to see how it's done.
peterchon··on Real-Time Ray Tracing Demo
I lost it at the starwars elevator music.
peterchon··on CSS: The bad bits and how to avoid them
In my opinion, most CSS bad bits are a byproduct of bad use, not a problem of the language(?) itself.

SASS, BAM, OOCSS, etc are all good practices. You can/will abuse those as well without proper understanding and planning.

peterchon··on What Teenagers Are Learning from Online Porn
I think this is an important topic for teens to understand and be able to openly talk about with their parents or other trusting grownups.

As grownups, I think we start to ignore hoping that kids will be able to figure out on their own without realizing what lasting effect it will have on their future relationship

peterchon··on Family fun with deepfakes
I see a new business selling face data
peterchon··on Redesigning Hawaii’s Emergency Alert System’s Interface in the Open
As a UI developer, I think we tend to over-think too much with the aesthetics and workflow. I think a simple confirmation prompt/or a 5 second timer before initiation would have prevented the issue.
peterchon··on Not Applicable: What Your Job Post Is Really Saying
I think this is where mentorship is paramount to junior/entry level engineers.
peterchon··on Translate screenshot into HTML using neural networks
I agree. Also, most development happens with ambiguous requirements and wants that can never be translated/interpreted correctly by machine (yet?)

Also, most work is some form of addition to an existing code base that simply cannot be re-written every time.

peterchon··on Turning web design mockups into code with Deep Learning
I'm curious about how it handles design changes. Will it just rewrite from scratch? or adjust the code it has already written?
peterchon··on Something is wrong with children's videos on the internet
I would like to know the exact intention of Youtube Kids. Is it truly an opportunity for the company to provide a safe place for kids? If so, how exactly are they filtering the contents?

I know, i know, it's free, don't use it, be a parent, blah blah blah. But it is a service being touted as being "kid-safe", are we not allowed to question?

peterchon··on Something is wrong with children's videos on the internet
I think the responsibility should lie with whose ever is making money off it.
peterchon··on Uber Visa Card
"For purchases and balance transfers, the variable APR is 15.99%, 21.74% or 24.74% depending upon our review of your application and your credit history at account opening. The variable APR for cash advances is 25.99%."

That's why.

peterchon··on Ask HN: What does a disciplined programmer look like?
consistency.
peterchon··on Ask HN: Best current book to learn JavaScript?
recursive function is just a fancy word for a function that calls itself.
peterchon··on Ask HN: Best current book to learn JavaScript?
Eloquent javascript is also fantastic. http://eloquentjavascript.net/
peterchon··on Spaces: A New Way to Connect with Friends in VR
This would be a great way for people with mobility issues to be included in activities.
peterchon··on What are the biggest engineering mistakes that a tech company has made?
having non-technical founders making technical decisions.
peterchon··on Ask HN: Underemployed and anxious. What would you do?
How long have you been applying? It's a marathon. Instead of blindly applying to jobs, try to meet people who can introduce you to employers. Warm-calls are always better than cold-calls.
peterchon··on Ask HN: Is front-end engineering ever going away?
Since we're heading towards a AI-driven applications, perhaps front-end has plateaued. However, would full-stack still be so relevant if front end is no-longer a concern?
peterchon··on Ask HN: Is front-end engineering ever going away?
As a graphic designer turned developer, yes - there's an enormous amount of demand for designer/developer hybrid.
peterchon··on How Immigration Uncertainty Threatens America’s Tech Dominance
Why can't you hire remote employees? is it imperative that the employee be present?

Considering that SF is the most expensive place to live, why would anyone want to move there? especially if you have family?

peterchon··on How Immigration Uncertainty Threatens America’s Tech Dominance
I think that's an edge case that is < .01% of what the H1-B visa is used for. The problem is that 99% of H1-B is being used as most people have described, which is undercutting the market value of engineers.
peterchon··on Is There Any Room for the Not-Passionate Developer?
I think Brian Dyson said it best:

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it.

Work efficiently during office hours and leave on time. Give the required time to your family, friends and have proper rest. Value has a value only if its value is valued.”

peterchon··on Please don’t learn to code
Just as you interpret it a certain way, I'm willing to bet a lot of people are interpreting it as "learn software, make millions!" as well.
peterchon··on Nanodegree Plus: Get hired within six months of graduating, or tuition refund
I was already employed as a FED, but it feels like they keep introducing these "enticements" and don't really care about the other cohorts.
peterchon··on Nanodegree Plus: Get hired within six months of graduating, or tuition refund
I graduated from their front-end developer nano degree program last year when it first launched. It doesn't feel great that none of these new "guarantees" applies to me.
peterchon··on Show HN: Mimic – class-fied inline CSS
of course, and I completely agree. I started off using a hyphen, but tried a colon just to make it look similar to inline-css.
peterchon··on Show HN: Mimic – class-fied inline CSS
Thanks, yes I agree it's a lot - but I'm hoping to make something that people can customize so that you don't have 0-100px of choices (but for now, it's an attempt at something new)
peterchon··on Show HN: Mimic – class-fied inline CSS
I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm trying to solve a problem. It's more of why not have modular css-classes that I can use to build things when using custom directives.
