pfych··on UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student
As someone who lives in one of these "activity zones" around a train station its actually awesome? There's a train into the city, groceries, multiple restaurants and stores, all within a couple minutes stroll of my home.

Australia (and especially Sydney) needs to build more houses!

pfych··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
It looks to be at least 20 days old, with another blog post on the site
pfych··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
I migrated to self hosted bitwarden (vaultwarden) on my Nix VPS.

Using the CXP integration in the iOS 1Password/Bitwarden apps made bringing over my OTP codes, Passkeys and passwords super easy. It didn't bring over my attached files though, but easy enough to manually do that. Was able to get it setup, migrated and 1Pass sub cancelled in less than an hour.

FYI, I was briefly having issues with the iOS and Desktop bitwarden apps but it was due to my vaultwarden version being a little behind! Making sure I was running latest with a nix flake update fixed any issues :)

pfych··on Bitcoin trail, Google cookies and Uber Eats orders help tie man to Steam malware
Claude get me a job that pays $200k/yr. Make a breakthrough.
pfych··on Bluesky Trademarks ATProto
maybe 1/2 of the people in my bsky feeds use non bsky pds'es & clients?
pfych··on DoesItAgeVerify: The age verification status of Open Source Operating Systems
It is just arch with some guy's dotfiles - and they're not even that good
pfych··on Full network of clitoral nerves mapped out for first time
> What the hell has happened to HN? Am I speaking with some Russian bot farm trying to breed political radicalization?

Sadly not - check sentiment on X around these topics, heritage foundation etc are pushing all these topics right now

pfych··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
FYI - shewon is entirely self reported and does no verification. It includes events such as local town fair bean bag throwing competitions.

It also classifies a trans person winning anything as ~3 losses since "a non-trans person may have shifted the entire bracket" moving 2nd -> 1st, 3rd -> 2nd etc... The entire site is hypebole and should not be used as a serious reference lol.

pfych··on Show HN: 3D Mahjong, Built in CSS
This is Mahjong Solitaire - It's completely different to actual Mahjong. It's a completely different game that uses Mahjong tiles.
pfych··on Discord/Twitch/Snapchat age verification bypass
This is just what I did, and plan to continue to do.
pfych··on UK Government’s ‘AI Skills Hub’ was delivered by PwC for £4.1M
This budget included a full modernization of their infrastructure as well as the website redesign. It's still heaps of money - but the media saying "a website cost $96 million AUD" is misleading.
pfych··on Disney Imagineering Debuts Next-Generation Robotic Character, Olaf
Someones linked in this thread the Defunctland video essay on these characters that I highly recommend watching since it goes into this in detail.

But the main reason is, there's a lot of brand imagery on the line with these interactions, someone putting on a voice, or using a voice changer could make a mistake. Disney instead have a conversation tree with pre-recorded voice lines that a remote operator can control. Much harder to mess up

pfych··on Microsoft Copilot AI Comes to LG TVs, and Can't Be Deleted
It's crazy to read this because I came from a Samsung TV/Display - LG Software is so much better than that!

Really wish we'd get dumb displays with these great panels :(

pfych··on Wikipedia earned $184M from donations, the servers cost less than $5M
I don't know why I ever bother scrolling down when opening a twitter thread... Some of those comments are crazy to read.

Personally I think while wikipedia does rake in an extremely large amount of money via donations, they provide an amazing platform and haven't felt the need to make it shitty with new features - or "keep up with market trends". I'm happy for it to stay this way.

pfych··on Sunsetting Supermaven
Supermaven still is the smartest & best tab autocomplete I've ever used. And it's a shame there is ZERO competitors who come close to how "smart" it felt with it's suggestions. All other tab autocomplete AI's feel annoying and almost always get in my way.

I stopped using Supermaven a while back when their JetBrains plugins broke and the only fix was a manual edit to a java file every time the IDE updated :(

pfych··on Verifying your Matrix devices is becoming mandatory
I use Thunderbird as my main Matrix client since it's already always open on my PC and is Lightweight. Whenever I open Element or any other client (Nheko, etc.) they all complain about each-other being unverified.

Clicking verify in any client does nothing. No popups in any other clients - doesn't ever seem to do anything. Sometimes Element will pop up a QR reader but there's no QR presented in the other clients. The UX around Matrix is a nightmare.

pfych··on Outdated Samsung handset linked to fatal emergency call failure in Australia
Australia shut down its entire 3G network, which a lot of devices used for emergency calls. A lot of phones worked with 4G still but did not support using 4G for emergency calls.

The telco's solution was to sell new phones to people, which a lot of people didn't do. Apparently all of these phones that still worked were flagged and blocked from using 4G but this apparently wasn't the case.

pfych··on Peter Thiel: Capitalism Isn't Working for Young People
He has defended the institution of slavery, and has suggested that certain races may be more naturally inclined toward servitude than others.[^1][^2]

pfych··on I took all my projects off the cloud, saving thousands of dollars
I run heaps of services on AWS and my bill is ~$2-3 - I'm not running any EC2 instances at all. Some of the offerings these cloud providers offer are extremely affordable if you know how to play your cards right and use the right services.
pfych··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
I'm always happy to hear this from people. I get maybe an email a month specifically about this post haha
pfych··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
My Samsung 4k 240hz OLED monitor has an absolutely gorgeous panel but if I knew I'd need to connect it to the internet and run a PYTHON script to disable some of its "features"[1] I probably would have gotten a similar LG display instead.

pfych··on What I Self Host
I'd love to colocate some hardware but all the options near me (Sydney, Australia) are insanely expensive for no reason, how do you go about finding affordable rackspace?
pfych··on Chat-GPT becomes Sex-GPT for verified adults
It's crazy that Visa, Mastercard & other payment processors were debanking actual creators and artists for adult content recently and now OpenAI is doing this.
pfych··on Framework supporting far-right racists?
I’ve been eying for the bubblegum framework 12 for a bit now and almost pulled the trigger. Frameworks political stance of “hardware should be maintainable and replaceable” really resonated with me and I was excited to support them with my money.

This is not it though - “Big Tent” means nothing when you’re supporting people who directly call for “Britain to be white again” and use slurs against minorities. It creates a gross space where people (like someone earlier in that thread) feel empowered to outright call for my existence to be invalidated.

This literally happened a few days ago on RetroAcheivements & they handled it well. I really hope framework come out with a response to all this.

pfych··on Playball – Watch MLB games from a terminal
I was just thinking about this for F1 - someone mentioned plaintextsports but it doesn't seem like F1 is there.

Already thinking about the ways you could represent a race with a text[^1], could be a very interesting project but not sure if there's any APIs.

pfych··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
Someone linked an article above that is worth a read - He's said some pretty horrific stuff about minority groups & is echoing discredited sentiment on immigrants and other minorities. It's worth a read.

pfych··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
LAN mode still works on my A1 & I can access it from Orca Slicer just fine.
pfych··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
Packages can still be updated, even if pinned. If a dependency of a dependency is not pinned - it can still be updated.
pfych··on Journaling using Nix, Vim and coreutils
I've seen it quite a bit on BlueSky with some devs I follow. It's a social git host built on-top of ATProto (The underlying tech of BlueSky): https://blog.tangled.sh/intro
pfych··on Electric bikes might just be the healthiest thing to ever happen to teenagers
Whenever I go for a run in the afternoon there's always a big group of teens down fishing at the river with a bunch of lime bikes next too them. Glad it's made it easier for them to all meet up and hang out outdoors.

It's funny when they wrap up though and you watch all of them kickstart the bikes. Riding off down the trail as they beep and click. Haha.
