This makes me realize that one of my formative childhood experiences was seeing the Crayola 64 crayon pack and thinking "huh, I guess there is NO limit."
pharrington··on The "Passive Income" trap ate a generation of entrepreneurs
You're conflating "passive income" with "real money". Competing with the big businesses is completely off topic.

He means its about a message loop, as opposed to an update loop.
pharrington··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
Fat chance, Satya!
pharrington··on Age verification on Systemd and Flatpak
This is actually nuts. You can't even constantly implement "age verification" at the system level in a way that makes sense across world cultures.

The only sane way to do this is you were playing along with arbitrary legislative age-gaters would be to add a generic "additional user info" blob to the account fields, if it didn't already exist.

pharrington··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Desktop and laptop sellers need to end their abusive business relationship with Microsoft, and start selling systems with a Linux distribution. They'll save costs while selling a better product. People who know they need Windows will always have the option to install it themselves.

When you work on a pre-existing codebase, you don't understand the code yet, but presumably somebody understood parts of it while building it. When you use AI to generate code, you guarantee that no one has ever understood the code being summoned. Don't ignore this difference.
pharrington··on Breaking the spell of vibe coding
Synths don't generate music, they generate tones. The analogy would be a program that generates really good programming languages.
pharrington··on Ex-GitHub CEO launches a new developer platform for AI agents
I do not want it.
pharrington··on The time I didn't meet Jeffrey Epstein
What stops me, a multibillionaire, from hiring someone to shoot the small government judge in the head?
pharrington··on ChatGPT Containers can now run bash, pip/npm install packages and download files
Have you ever been frustrated with software before? Has a computer program ever wasted your time by being buggy, obviously too slow or otherwise too resource intensive, having a poorly thought out interface, etc?
pharrington··on ChatGPT Containers can now run bash, pip/npm install packages and download files
So we should all work to become better programmers! What I'm seeing now is too many people giving up and saying "most code is bad, so I may was well pump out even worse code MUCH faster." People are chasing convenience and getting a far worse quality of life in exchange.
pharrington··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
What other operating systems have you used?
pharrington··on We will ban you and ridicule you in public if you waste our time on crap reports

If you're working in big tech and you truly believe you are spoiled, then why not quit that job and let the migrant improve their living situation, while you live in the luxury you already have?
pharrington··on The Dilbert Afterlife
Trump's trademark skill is conning and taking advantage of people, just like Dogbert.
pharrington··on You have three minutes to escape the perpetual underclass
And most of the texts you can access at the local library aren't even at that local library right now. Libraries are part of a humongous network. If you're willing to wait a few days, there's an avalanche of material that you definitely can't instantly find on the internet.
