But today, the web has become so ubiquitous with the real world that I know I now have to play the game. It has taken me a long time to realize this, and I still don't feel comfortable with it.
To me, being greedy is hardly the worst trait to have as entrepreneur.
And BTW I live in Canada, not some European country or Japan. Why is America so slow to adopt these things?
But I always thought that belief was illogical, especially if you believe learning itself is an actual skill. If learning is a skill as much as say drawing, then you should only become better at trying new things as you get older.
I just started the experiment and do not have much online but if you're interested you can follow at http://theoutliers.com
I'm doing 6.001 SICP course right now, the video lectures of Sussman and the other guy was mind blowing to me and most of it went over my head. I didn't quit though, found another resource for it in HTDP and am now going through it. The first part was easy, I could go through a chapter in 1 hour and do all the exercise. I'm now on the second part of the book and it's not so easy anymore, one chapter is now taking 3-5 hours to complete. But if I look at the big picture, it seems I'm par for the course as one is suppose to spend 10 hours a week per class.
Some smart company out there, if done right can easily undermine the Apple dominance by lowering the cost of hardware and trying to make up for it in app sales. You would have to own the entire vertical system like Apple, which now there are two -- RIM and Google with their Motorola acquisition. Google has the best chance, they are sitting on a pile cash and can easily subsidized the losses for their hardware partners like Samsung and HTC. However, I think RIM is the most ideal as they are dealing with a chicken-and-egg type scenario with developers and lack of apps. They are desperate to stay relevant in the market, so why not do something crazy.
You don't learn by just Googling, you learn by working through the problem which reinforces concepts that you've read. Using Google is like if you were to go through school just copying answers -- you'd learn absolutely nothing!
