phpnode··on YAML document from hell (2023)
Whoever thought supporting sexagesimal numbers was a good idea needs to spend some extended time away from their computer to reflect on what they’ve done
phpnode··on Behind the scenes of Bun Install
It’s a newer, vc funded competitor to the open source battle tested dominant player. It has incentives to lock you in and ultimately is just not that different from node. There’s basically no strategic advantage to using bun, it doesn’t really enable anything you can’t do with node. I have not seen anyone serious choose it yet, but I’ve seen plenty of unserious people use it
phpnode··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
The other point is that recent polls suggest the British public are overwhelmingly in support of this legislation [0], which is not reflected in most of the narrative we see online. Whether they support how it has been implemented is a different matter, but the desire to do something is clear.

why stop there? 16-bit bytes would be so much cleaner

phpnode··on Show HN: Zero-codegen, no-compile TypeScript type inference from Protobufs
1. This whole subthread has been about the ?raw approach, not about a hypothetical feature that has not been agreed to yet.

2. Typescript runs before your bundler and has no idea what the bundler is doing, so any transformations you do there are invisible to it.

You keep telling me this is possible today, at this point I'd ask you to please prove it, because if it's true then that's very exciting and I have a bunch of use cases for it.

phpnode··on Show HN: Zero-codegen, no-compile TypeScript type inference from Protobufs
I think you’re misunderstanding how this project works. The contents of that ?raw file are opaque to the typescript type system, it will see it as a `string`, not as the literal content of the file, therefore it cannot be parsed using template literal types as this project does and cannot be used to derive typescript types from protobuf files.
phpnode··on JSX over the Wire
it happens because people really want to participate in the conversation, and that participation is more important to them than making a meaningful point.
phpnode··on Show HN: Zero-codegen, no-compile TypeScript type inference from Protobufs
You’re talking about runtime, I’m talking about at compile time
phpnode··on Show HN: Zero-codegen, no-compile TypeScript type inference from Protobufs
right, but typescript sees that as a `string`, and not a string literal and thus cannot be parsed by this project or others like it.

phpnode··on Here are the Attack Plans That Trump's Advisers Shared on Signal
they will probably trickle this info out, the administration said that there was no classified information in the chats, so the atlantic are now free to publish these latest messages. The next step is for the administration to claim that there was nothing "operationally sensitive" in the messages, which will free the atlantic to release the next batch that contradicts that claim. Repeat.
phpnode··on Millions are visiting the European Alternatives site. What trends are we seeing?
A lot of people who get called TERFs absolutely don't identify as feminists, let alone _radical_ feminists. It's just a meaningless term now
phpnode··on Millions are visiting the European Alternatives site. What trends are we seeing?
yes, just like almost every other group that voted for it. It's wrong to single out farmers for this.
phpnode··on Rippling sues Deel over spying
It’s rarely a case of winner takes all, and in this specific scenario both companies have grown into billion dollar valuations. Seems like it’s working for them, ignoring all the lawsuits
phpnode··on Rippling sues Deel over spying
@dang is this story getting flagged? It's appeared under various links in the last 24hrs and does not appear to have ever hit the front page despite a bunch of upvotes. This story seems relevant to HN, and given the policy of careful moderation of stories related to YC-companies perhaps it deserves a spot in the another-chance queue?
phpnode··on A 10x Faster TypeScript
This is very exciting! I'm curious if this move eventually unlocks features that have been deemed too expensive/slow so far, e.g. typing `ReactElement` more accurately, typing `TemplateStringsArray` etc

phpnode··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
For me the biggest downside is that they reliably attract vermin. I tried a bunch of things to deter rats but they were ever present when we had hens
phpnode··on Rust Is Eating JavaScript (2023)
I said they've gone "all in", not that they're all using JS/TS now
phpnode··on Rust Is Eating JavaScript (2023)
Those examples aren't representative of the broader industry though. There are far more devs working at former Java and .NET shops that have never written a single line of Ruby and are all in on JS/TS now
phpnode··on Rust Is Eating JavaScript (2023)
No chance, relatively few software companies ever adopted Rails but a huge number went from Java or .NET -> JS/TS. The draw of cross project code reuse and having teams only needing to know a single language remains compelling.

They do have more users than that, but from memory they typically distribute it in some other interesting way - i think there's a CLI that installs and manages it.
phpnode··on Oracle justified its JavaScript trademark with Node.js–now it wants that ignored
it's Oracle's UI library that they encourage their official partners to use. I've had the misfortune of doing some consulting for a company that used it, it's actually very fully featured but the internals are totally insane and very dated.
