I hope consumers return these phones in droves like Windows RT and Windows 10 S. The issue is that sideloading isn’t an immediate concern—users would only realize the limitation later, when it’s too late to return the device.

phr4ts··on Fela Kuti First African to Get Grammys Lifetime Achievement Award
Fela bled for Nigeria—literally.

He carried scars on his back from police and soldier beatings meant to silence him for speaking against the government. His houses and estate were set ablaze. His land was seized by the government and never returned.

His mother was thrown off a building by soldiers.

Yet, the very people he fought for chose to focus on his vices and mocked him for them.

I’m glad he finally got this award.

phr4ts··on ‘Nigerian Prince’ Email Scammer Arrested in Louisiana
Cast psychology aside and focus solely on the economic benefit.

$50 (18k NGN) is nothing to most Americans. However, 18k NGN is the current monthly national wage in Nigeria.

It costs little or nothing to blast Copy & paste emails to 1 million people using hacked / free SMTP servers.

Other factors to consider:

It requires so little skill that 14 year old kids do it.

Risk of getting cut is also super low. Police are on the look out for these scammers NOT to jail em but to collect their own share. They walk the scammers to the atm and take part or all of what they find there - usually, half.

Unemployment rate is 25.20% but this doesn't tell the full story.

Underemployment is another factor. As a result, many scammers are employed full time. The employment provides three benefits. 1. Free use of office computers and internet and most important electricity for scam. 2. A steady shock absorber income source for dry periods. 3. A camouflage to keep neighbors' tongues from wagging

I've rambled.

Scamming is so easy, has low risk, barrier to entry and high pay off.

One other point i failed to mentioned. If you live in SV, tech will rub on you. Same applies living in developing nations. Scam will rub on ya.

phr4ts··on Don Jayamanne, creator of Python extension for VS Code, joins Microsoft
Great suggestion. But...

Microsoft has an annoying "in your face" bundling precedent. (Windows vs. IE, Windows Store. Renaming hell: windows live..editor, messenger, essentials, msn..messenger, One..drive, Xbox..music)

It should be okay, if the VS code team can integrate Azure without management or marketing taking over. Else VS code would become Azure code and it'll nag you to login to your Azure account on every startup.

phr4ts··on Fraud Scandals Sap China’s Dream of Becoming a Science Superpower
Copy and pass is not an accurate description.

It's more like chew and pour. Cram and pass. Photocopy.

>'Three Idiots' Where silencer says, "I don't care what it means. I'll memorize it." Describes Nigerian, Ghanaian and Indian school system.

This is what results when lecturers also crammed and passed without understanding. Since they don't know what's important, they favor trivial parts of their subjects.

For instance on an Excel course, the lecturer asked us to draw the exercises in drawing books after every class.

When most exam questions are patterned after "Who wants to be a millionaire?" The only way to get good grades is to cram.

But these issues are Child's play compared to the real issue: In public schools what you know doesn't matter. If you've not "sorted" the lecturer, it's an automatic E, F, or D.

When a lecturer tells you on your first day that A is for alpha and omega. B is for the lecturer. And C is for bright students...

I've not made anything up.

Basically, the bribery in developing or underdeveloped countries is simply a reflection of what goes on in schools.

phr4ts··on My Improbable Graduation: From a Tiny Village in Ghana to Johns Hopkins
War on corruption has impoverished many African esp. West African countries.

A new government spend the first half of their term 'fighting' corruption i.e trying to recover the looks of the previous government.

Whether the recovered loot is not used for the benefit of the country is debatable.

However, this new government uses it's remaining term to siphone and hide it's loots in Switzerland, Hong Kong - outside the country.

Why?

Because the next government could, usually seizes houses, companies, bank accounts in the country.

The next insurance for these thieves in authority is to NEVER leave government.

Thus, they keep looting and exporting the country's wealth - lowering the exchange rate, necessitating even larger thefts and government borrowing.

phr4ts··on My Improbable Graduation: From a Tiny Village in Ghana to Johns Hopkins
Authority stealing depends hugely on opaqueness, the ability of elected individuals to have privacy in their supposedly PUBLIC dealings.

Thieves in position of authority benefit from EXPERT status i.e. citizens do not feel qualified to monitor the activities the activities of the elected. Officials openly flout their ill gotten wealth and the citizens are in awe, praying to God for a chance to eat the 'National cake.'

Just last month, I talked to at least 10 ordinary persons. And these 'educated' individuals couldn't suspend disbelieve and imagine how much better their world would be if they could keep their representatives in check.

They all believed that their votes didn't matter. And it's quite true. In the last Nigerian election for instance, individuals from the Igbo tribe weren't given voters card because they wouldn't vote for the incumbent party.

I've spent a ton of time thinking about the state of Africa. And I don't see a way out short of a bloody revolution.

Even then, history says a revolution would only replace one set of tyrants with another.
