piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
I am in the market. I am not the market myself, so my opinion on the efficacy of regulation is of little concern to the debate. One thing is clear though: the election of a deregulation candidate immediately makes market go up, and the inverse. That’s what’s being discussed here, wheee the OP says “must be corruption”.
piker··on Verification Is Not Knowledge: Science needs more than answers
Maybe but it might also be useless. Knowing a very large number is the product of two very large primes doesn’t at all help the reader to understand factorization, for example.

> their practical impact can be independent of whether humans fully understand how they were reached

See: most of pharma

piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
Totally disappointing from a citizen (and market?) perspective, but I think you're stretching the meaning of "regulation" to try to squeeze tariffs in. That's like saying war is "regulating" the other country.
piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
Sure, also all the gambling/prediction markets, abortion-adjacent stocks etc. could potentially be down. In terms of the market, though, those industries just don't matter. The lion's share of the economy (energy, finance, technology, tobacco, firearms) benefit from the election of a party that is hostile to their regulation. It's not really debatable. What is debatable is whether that's correct or good, since deregulation allows those organizations to potentially externalize costs to the environment, society, etc.

I don't know the history. Nixon? Seems like it was motivated in the 1950s. I don't think Richard Nixon was on the ballot this year, but maybe I just missed it.
piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
That's a fair observation, and perhaps requires qualifying my initial point with "non-social" regulation. The market doesn't care about those.
piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
Perhaps, but that's not really relevant as I am not the stock market.

Ok members of one party are proposing rent controls, city-owned groceries, abolition of AI advancement, expansion of the EPA, etc. and the other is revoking long-standing SEC, EPA and other agency regulations. This claim just doesn't hold up.

(I'm a swing voter if that helps.)

piker··on AI stocks slide as Texas governor result raises data center risks
That's a motivated take. Obviously the party and candidates which promote less regulation are preferable to the stock market. It doesn't require accusations of corruption, and it doesn't mean their opponents are wrong, either.
piker··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
Let me help you by breaking down your point.

> The goal is to find solutions

> and to advance the field

Nobody seems to be disputing LLMs help with the former, but some are concerned that the latter is jeopardized by having aliens do our homework.

piker··on Running a bootstrapped SaaS for 20 years with my brother
How has revenue changed during the AI period? Are you guys able to maintain or grow with the rise of coding agents?

[edit: what’s with the downvotes? I love the story and am curious if Claude etc have affected their business.]

piker··on Show HN: A working Nintendo in ~1GB of Qwen weights
Same, same and same.
piker··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
Is this like a PR piece for the guy? It's odd to see him singled out in a piece that would be normally be about the company, the CEO or the decision itself.

piker··on The importance of communities around software
I don’t disagree, but this ignores some of what we have learned about critical masses and network effects. If everyone can just take their own copy with no interaction, many won’t join the community and it may never reach a critical mass despite and because of its openness.
piker··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
People blame AI and/or the culture there, but IMO competition got it. As more and more code went to public domains (i.e., mostly GitHub), it became just as quick and often better to go to the source itself.
piker··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
Two types of bankruptcy in the U.S.: liquidation and reorganization. The latter lets a company reshuffle assets and debt and schedule new payment plans to continue to exist as a going concern. It often wipes out shareholders.
piker··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
> Certainly the previous generations had more kids, and probably spent less time actively parenting them.

Yes but those kids weren't at real risk of having their minds completely subverted by for-profit organizations.

piker··on Dutch National Cyber Security Center is Offline because it uses PHP
Due respect, neither of those make sense. PHP is boring software, and this website routinely suggests (1) use it if it is fit for purpose and (2) don't rewrite for the sake of it. For most sites, the engineering effort to have a static backup of their dynamic website (say, generated by Wordpress or Drupal) just isn't possible. They just need to power down and patch.

[EDIT: I see I may have erroneously extended your criticism to sites other than NCSC, for which it does make sense. I would still defend using PHP.]

piker··on Security advisory: Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, update now
Seems like even the EOL versions should get a patch for something like this.
piker··on The obscure trust looming over Anthropic's IPO
What? No. i'm saying if they IPO without disclosing this, they are going to be sued when/if that authority is invoked by people who bought it at the IPO without know about this.
piker··on The obscure trust looming over Anthropic's IPO
Sorry, when you say similar language, do you mean it's disclosed? That's all I was responding to. This isn't my area, but I practiced securities law for 10 years and to me an arrangement affecting governance like this would need to be disclosed under 10(b)-5.
piker··on The obscure trust looming over Anthropic's IPO
Oh, no i'm just saying that's the trigger when you get sued
piker··on The obscure trust looming over Anthropic's IPO
Eh, not sure I agree here.

> It can seat four members of Anthropic’s seven-member board, and dismiss them without cause.

Good luck without a risk factor and description of that thing in the prospectus the first time that authority is invoked on a public company.

piker··on How the Claude Code team does code review
Yep.

The worst part about this is that if you aren't watching it, the AI will "solve" this with a thousand assert_3_plus_5_equals_8() test cases that just further clutter the workspace and the context window. Churn baby churn.

piker··on Why We're Banning AI

piker··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
That does make sense
piker··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
No, but none of that seems out of reach of Claude in a loop given my reading of TFA. That’s why I asked.
