pineaux··on Building a Wall Lamp from Scratch
I cant help but wonder, are these kind of posts on the HN front page because all the programmers are nervous about their jobs and looking to switch to maker/woodworking jobs? It scratches some of the same itches, for sure...
pineaux··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
Yeah most of us are so fucked. With almost no way of protecting ourselves. No real amount of assets that will give enough power to save ourselves from the people in a position that can maximally leverage AI and lock others out. I see a future where these capabilities will be locked behind super high price pay walls. Why wouldn't they? How recoup investments if the price doesnt go up?
pineaux··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Part of the epstein class, dont forget.
pineaux··on The Emergent Symbolic Structure of Artificial Neural Networks
What about the mathematical advancements?
pineaux··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
And because it's accurate the AI will know how to weigh that accurate information against other accurate information in such a way that it will give you a great answer without any help. In other words: any amateur will be able to do aircraft maintenance! What can go wrong? /s
pineaux··on Glacier Mice
Venus scenario? I wonder if that could happen. Time to explore that rabbit hole
pineaux··on Get your Windows license refund
Apple should also be forced to allow the user freedom to choose at least one other OS. But maybe thats too much to ask. I think it's not too much too ask, but I am probably an outlier. Dont start about Asahi please. I know it exists.
pineaux··on Error by AI scribe during medical appointment leaves patient devastated
It has been called late stage capitalism since the 1920s
pineaux··on Sun Clock
I actually have exactly a clock as a mental model of the year and the seasons. December is 12 o' clock.

But weirdly, I dont have a mind's clock to represent the day. Precisely because it feels to me that the clock shape is unfit to show time. Because 03:00am feels wildly different from 03:00pm. My mental representation is a 3d spiral slightly offset and looping back on itself. So imagine two clockfaces when looking from up top, seethrough. The bottom one is a bit to the left so you can see both well. Each consecutive number goes a bit higher. After 12 midnight the numbers quickly decend down back to 06:00am. I have this image for as long as.I remember.

pineaux··on Clamiga: Common Lisp for the Amiga
Other "nice" names for this product: AmiColi AmiLisp
pineaux··on Anthropic revenue reportedly jumps to more than $11.5B in second quarter
No, as i understand it: the underwriters are the banks that write out the shares and give a sort of guarantee. So they decide the price of the IPO.
pineaux··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
Actually bipedal systems are very energy efficient when walking and moving and very slightly inefficient when standing still.
pineaux··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Its because democracies werent and arent really democracies. But that aside. Corruption is rampant, the oil sector has politians in their pocket for a long long time and since the cold war, a counter narrative doesnt really put any weight in the scale. The billionaires arent afraid anymore.
pineaux··on The Dark Night of Mathematics
I almost never hear the story that I find the most believable: that a small group of people will use AI to demolish the 99.999% of us.
pineaux··on What I learned selling 2,500 MIDI recorders: Hardware is not so hard
I wanted to ask the exact same question. 2500 is a very low order size for injection molding am I wrong?
pineaux··on Volkswagen planning to cut up to 100.000 jobs globally
They can just tariff the shit out of the Chinese cars. That will work great.
pineaux··on AI Is a Bad Tool
I get their point, but they are probably wrong. Not saying the AIs will not get better and better. They probably will, but I see a chance that there are smaller and smaller gains and the AIs cant make those gains happen. But coding with llm's doesnt say its shoddy code per se. I view it as: We used to use hand saws to make cabinets. Then we had tracksaws. Then we had CNC saws... You still need to understand woodworking to make a nice table in all these scenarios.
pineaux··on Mistral OCR 4
Uhm... isnt mistral mostly funded by ASML? A dutch company?
pineaux··on Trial of 12mph bike lane speed limit grinds gears of Dutch cyclists
Nah, its almost for sure xenophobic and classist. I think fat bikes are the best thing that happened to amsterdam because all the scooters disappeared. All the poor people that used to ride scooters are now riding fat bikes. Its better for their health and their wallet. Yes they tend to be a bit less educated and socialised, but they were like that when they drove scooters as well. Banning fat bikes is gesture politics.
pineaux··on Vinyl succumbs to Loudness War: more than just collateral damage (2025)
That is a false way of saying it. Because then you are unpacking what dBs are, which is fascinating, but not how humans perceive sound. We use dBs exactly because it approaches human experience of sound better (although still shitty) than sound pressure would. A better logarithmic system would use base 2, I think phons tried to popularize that, but signal processing calculation with a base 2 log is less convenient than a base 10 log. So I think that is the reason.

For who wants to know: sound perception doubles every 10dB so. 30db of dynamic range is about 8 times as much dynamic range from the perceptual perspective.

pineaux··on Magnetoelectric antennas could transform how underwater robots talk
And a lot faster than on land. 5 times if I recollect correctly.
pineaux··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
Are you the kind of guy that says that all things that serve no purpose except for entertainment should be banned?

I am of the opposite school. I think practical things are fine and dandy, but the things that make us human, make life worth living, are all "useless".

pineaux··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
This is some terry pratchett level craziness.
pineaux··on Justice Department scrubs its website of news releases about Jan. 6 defendants
Nah, its not that they were trespassing. Its that they were trespassing while shouting that they were going to hang pence. It was because they were part of a group that attacked police officers. The goal of the trespassing counts.
pineaux··on Specsmaxxing – On overcoming AI psychosis, and why I write specs in YAML
Anything [prefix]maxxing just sounds so bad. It just feels so Andrew Tate...
pineaux··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
Its because the president used to have a modicum of respect for the house and the Senate. So the president did have the sole right to send military anywhere on the planet and even launch nukes without any need for congressional permission. This is by design. But the other presidents were a bit less crazy so we never noticed.
pineaux··on We accepted surveillance as default
I agree. Was annoyed by it.
pineaux··on We accepted surveillance as default
Play and read simultaneously. Its nice.
pineaux··on Turn your best AI prompts into one-click tools in Chrome
To chatgpt? Claude I believe, but chat?
pineaux··on The Future of Everything Is Lies, I Guess: Safety
There is a pretty interesting study of a large group of chimps. I dont remember where exactly but they have been civil warring the last 15 years or so. Point is, it seems that there is some kind of innate group formation process.
